RE: IE trusted sites

2012-05-02 Thread Bob Fronk
The IE Trusted Sites GPO is a PITA. Once you set it, it locks all users from
adding. I understand the security reasoning for this, but there should be a
way to select if you want to lock the users from adding sites as well.

Initially we used it to add some sites to everyone. However, a few users
needed to be able to add trusted sites to get certain work related sites to
function correctly.

It would be nice to be able to add sites without greying out the ability for
users to add sites as well.

RE: Eaton UPSs?

2012-05-02 Thread Bob Fronk
Have had a 9170+ for about 5 years. It has provided good service. I have it
serviced every 6 months and all the batteries have been replaced at least twice
over this period.

It did suffer a battery controller failure a couple years ago, which lead to
shutting itself off without by-passing, so it killed power to three racks of
servers. IIRC, there was a firmware upgrade to resolve this in the future.

Overall, I have been happy with the product and the service techs have been
very knowledgeable.

Tuning the TCP Stack on 2K8 R2 (tcp receive window)

2012-05-02 Thread Don Kuhlman
Hi folks.  Happy hump day ;)

I'm working on testing an application called MassTransit(MT) from Group Logic.
- basically, it's for automatically pushing files that users drop into folders
and is used in workflows, etc.  We are trying to evaluate some optimizations
for throughput with one of the remote sites and MT where the remote site has
some bandwidth limitations.

For testing I have the following:
1 new 2K8 R2 VM test server in remote site with MT.
Approximate RTT(Round Trip Time) ping times from local to remote site are 300
MS.  Remote site has a 20M in/out pipe.

Local MT server 2K8 R2 SP1 VM.
Our local pipe is 100G.

Both Servers TCP settings (as shown by netsh int tcp show global) are below.
The only thing I changed is the ECN Capability setting - I enabled it. Default
was disabled.

I'm being advised by the corporate network team that we can also tweak the TCP
receive settings on the remote site that has the longer RTT times.

Everything that I've found so far says that 2K8 automatically tunes the TCP
receive settings.
The only thing I can find that may be related is the tcp autotuning value which
has a brief write up article here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/74556-enable-disable-tcp-auto-tuning.html

It says you can use  netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=restricted to
try and override the stack's behavior.
Values are - disabled, highlyrestricted, restricted, NORMAL(is the default),
experimental

Does anyone have any experience or comments on this?

Thanks,

Don K

Like all other UPSes, they suck. But not as much as not having a UPS.

Specific problems include: A million different models with poor
differentiation and unnecessary design differences; OEM replacement
batteries are hard to find/order; the front panel UI for models
without a alphanumeric display is confusing. In the past their USB
interfaces had problems with a very common Intel chipset, but I expect
they've fixed that by now. In the past their PC-based software
sucked, but I haven't used it in forever, and everyone else's software
sucks, too.

On the plus side: They're often cheaper than the competition, they
have the best selection of double-conversion models; unlike 1/2 the
APC UPSes I've used, I've never had the batteries swell up and jam
inside the chassis.

I considered Eaton for our current UPS strategy but their
extended-run options were poor for the voltage and amp-hours we
happened to need.

RE: Tuning the TCP Stack on 2K8 R2 (tcp receive window)

I wouldn't suggest turning it off, usually; just ensure that you have
server-class NICs and the most recent drivers for them available and that you
have the features also enabled on the NICs.

Subject: Tuning the TCP Stack on 2K8 R2 (tcp receive window)

Thanks,

Don K

2012-05-02 Thread Don Kuhlman
Thanks MBS...  I was going to try the restricted setting to see if that
impacts anything leaving the other values enabled/on.  Since these are VMs, the
other stuff I read is saying that the offloading settings may not really have
any effect on the outcomes.

Hey guys, anyone here using windows phone found a reasonable solution for
syncing exchange/outlook notes to your phone? I'm really missing this and my
 google-fu is failing me.

Since I'm so OT anyway, I'll go ahead and day I'm really liking the windows

Re: OT:windows phone and outlook notes

2012-05-02 Thread joe user

Think you have to consider One Note or Office 365.
Love my WP7. Check out I'm a WP7! by Liquid Daffodil.
Great app, lots of features. I have iPhone and Droid ICS, etc and my
Windows Phone is by far the best. However, there are a number of free
apps on Droid that are either not available yet or cost $ on WP.

Still with the drawbacks it has the benefits still outweigh!

It would be nice to be able to add sites without greying out the ability for

Windows - even the Windows 8 app (downloadable from the Windows 8 market).

OneNote is great coupled with Outlook and Exchange, but when you use
multiple devices, it's not a great solution. Evernote does notes and more.

Hey guys, anyone here using windows phone found a reasonable solution for
syncing exchange/outlook notes to your phone? I'm really missing this and
my google-fu is failing me.

Since I'm so OT anyway, I'll go ahead and day I'm really liking the windows
phone interface, just missing some of my favorite apps right now.

Re: Meraki wireless

2012-05-02 Thread Matthew W. Ross
If the number of APs you need are low, this looked to be a very cost-effective
solution.

As the APs went up, it became very expensive for the yearly fees.

We looked at it, and went with a competitor. (Ruckus)

Also, if you like something a ton cheaper, check out UniFi:

And for OneNote

Go into Outlook Notes,
Select them all
Right Click and
'Send to OneNote'

No add on needed :)

One other thing for synching Outlook notes, if you use Android. I keep
