Re: Managed service

2012-12-14 Thread Greg Sweers
I run what is a considered a Managed Services Organization. So I can speak to
this pretty well. This is not a solicitation or pitch, its just what we do and
answering the thread.

The growing trend among IT business owners is to bid a monthly service for
various levels of support. Our most common is AYCE (All You Can Eat), we
charge a fee per device. Server/Workstation/Network Device(Switch, Wireless,
Firewall) and Backup. Based on volume pricing is varied. Everything is
covered within support of the servers/desktops/equipment. Dealing with
vendors, identifying issues, optimizing performance, replacing equipment, and
managing all aspects of covered equipment. Backup is completely image based
with Log truncation and database mount verification with local
full/incrementals for scoped length of terms and Warm Standby. Data is also
replicated to a Top level datacenter where we can spin up the entire
environment within a few minutes.

Project work is a seperate scope unless built into the monthly, usually for a
given # of hours each month. Goes towards VCIO/Consulting/Project work.

In a typical managed environment you will pay to not worry about the
maintenance, realtime monitoring, automated remediation with manual if
thresholds do not rectify in short order. Patching, antivirus, performance
tuning, application installations, image building, backups and offsite
replication all included, verified, tested 24x7, software updates, and help
desk support for a single monthly fee.

When you factor the costs into managing this and ENSURING its 100% 24x7 for
organizations the cost of labor, software, and servers to perform these tasks
usually outstrips the cost of the monthly.

We also offer Tier 2 services to support local IT guys who just need outsourced
help for projects or to offload, or backup services so they never worry about
it. Just get reports and confirmations of backups/work performed.

Then we move this and apply it to our Cloud services with a different twist.

This is the growing trend and what more and more providers are doing in terms
of flat fees. Guarantees revenues, and we have built systems and processes
that performs excellently with a minimal amount of manual intervention thereby
lowering costs. When you build it to scale, you can do much more work with
less people, which frees local IT up to focus the IT strategy to be in line
with the business goals and not worry about keeping IT up.

Two questions.
Where is the archive?
The company I'm working with wants to do a monthly fee type of a thing. For
general support. Is this common? Do you know how much is reasonable for a
monthly deal?

We have a hourly rate set for projects.

Thanks

The server is used for Exchange, AD, and fileshare.
One of my tasks will be to migrate exchange to a provider.

My tasks will be to provide general IT services. Help desk kind of stuff and
server management.

What's a going rate for this kind of service?

I'd guess you're looking on the Account tab of a given user's Properties. There
is a blank check box next to Unlock Account. This does not mean the account is
locked out. If it was there would be additional phrasing after Unlock Account:
Something like "This user's account is locked.

The few times I used it in the past, probably a few years ago, it was pretty
much spot on. Oh well

That's what I have an actual NAV system now for.

Every mapping company has to re-invent the wheel.

Why can't they share the accurate information they have gathered? Try

2012-12-14 Thread Graeme Carstairs
Agreed but not just on the iOS app, this is on the web page as well.

Poor. show.

And apple get their data from Tom - Tom who own teleatlas, who is who
Google get their mapping data from.

It took 6 years and 3 after me reporting it for them to get my street name
correct.

18 months, of them saying they have seen the error and are fixing it.

Its only as good as the data used.

Looked different than the old app on iOS5 to me

First experience was an epic fail, I copied a link from the map to a Dr's

link in calendar and it goes to a mall 40 miles away..pbbbttt

That must be the apple influence on the app

That is how I do it physically with my DFS boxes. It will work virtually too.

configure the 2 VM's to talk to each other via the virtual switch and not send
traffic over the physical wire unless it's to client PC's? Two virtual NIC's
each VM is the easy part, but how do I tell them to dedicate a NIC to each

Re: OT VDI in a box.

2012-12-14 Thread James Rankin
Yes, the vendor has to agreeyou can use tools like AppDNA or ChangeBase
to give you an idea of any compatibility issues, but if the vendor won't
support it virtualized (it's just obstructiveness in some cases, but you
can't get away from it), then you'll have to put together an alternative
delivery mechanism.

RE: Managed service

2012-12-14 Thread David Lum
There are many threads on this if you search the archives, but I love this
topic, so...

Rate: It depends where you are. Portland, OR Metro IT consultants charge
between $80-$125/hr. In fact I'm the only one I know below $100/hr, granted I
don't know that many others, like three. Check the local competition and be
aware of your differentiation from Geek squad, etc. will be the server side of
things, so keep in mind they might consider that type of service and pricing as
a barometer.

Write up an SLA / expectations. Know what you're willing to take on and
emphasize quality to your clients vs. number of clients - it's OK to say no to
potential clients, as well as let this client know what you support and what
you don't.

If possible, set them up with Log Mein or equivalent (I have Log Mein on a
system per client, then remote to their other systems from there) so you can do
timely remote work. I also charge less for remote work vs. onsite ($55/hr. vs.
$80/hr. onsite), and have it identified up front that emergency calls/work is
additional rate. Agree on how often they can expect you onsite (once/mo. for
patching maybe, and one other time/mo. perhaps). I also managed to work in a
fixed monthly fee in agreement to respond to Help Desk tickets in-between my
onsite days - previously I would only work on them the once day/week I was
onsite, the fee is for me to work on them within 24hrs of being submitted. That
fee offsets some work done that I wouldn't otherwise bill them for, like 5-10
min remote fixes that would take as much time to write up the invoice for as it
does to perform the fix.

Set expectations first, saves a lot of frustration later.

Subject: Managed service

I'm starting an IT service side gig. The place has about 10 workstations and
one server.

The server is used for Exchange, AD, and fileshare.
One of my tasks will be to migrate exchange to a provider.

My tasks will be to provide general IT services. Help desk kind of stuff and
server management.

What's a going rate for this kind of service?

Thanks

RE: OT VDI in a box.

2012-12-14 Thread Kennedy, Jim
It is this, without question: ""Bring your device, but if it doesn't work
then it's your problem," ...other than the older XP machines that we own that
we are going to extend the life of

But you raise valid questions that should always be answered, answers in line.

Subject: Re: OT VDI in a box.

We have been looking at VDI in a Box as well, but not as a BYOD solution.

I like BYOD, but I think it's not worth it in the end. If it's a "Bring your
device, but if it doesn't work then it's your problem," kind of BYOD, I have no
problems. Otherwise, here are some bullets for shooting down this bad idea:

* Will each student be expected to use the VDI-in-a-Box desktop to use Office?
If they want to store their stuff on their network storage, yes. If they want
to go Google Apps or Office with Google App storage they can. They all have
both already.

* Is it expected that the VDI-in-a-Box session will be where the students will
be content filtered?
They are content filtered everywhere. If they hit guest and go straight out
with their device they are filtered. They will of course be filtered on the VDI
box as well.

* Will students be provided with a device if they cannot afford a laptop? (This
is a question that often comes up for these kinds of ideas at our school.)
They will use existing devices, which are plentiful. This is in addition to our
devices...giving the user options.

* Will a student with an iPad, iPod touch or Android device have reduces
productivity vs a computer with a built in keyboard? How will this be
compensated for?
They can do what they can with the device or they can use our existing desktops.

* Will you be supporting BYOD devices "after hours"? Do you have the staffing
for such support?
Heck no we wont be supporting them during hours, let alone after hours.

* Is your wireless infrastructure up to the task of the increased workload?
Yes, and then some.
* Do all of your currently supported software program work under a VDI solution?
Yes, very well. Any thing that does no has already been phased out.

* Does your school currently have the right to confiscate inappropriate
material or devices? If you do, how does the student perform the necessary
tasks without their BYOD?
Yes, we have the right and I believe the legal requirement to confiscate
inappropriate material. They can go back to using our desktops.

RE: Heads up: MS12-081 KB2758857 issue - Update

2012-12-14 Thread Kennedy, Jim
I have not had good luck mapping drives with DFS in Win 7, fwiw. Very sporadic.

Update: KB2758857 appears to only effect a DFS folder redirects to a drive
mapping I have via GPO on my Win7 systems. My desktop and start menu are
redirected to the DFS share and at startup I get a "cannot connect to
\\DFS\file\share". Talking to my storage team, it may be an issue with our DFS
implementation but I won't know more on that until tomorrow.

* RDP in unaffected
* Uninstalling the KB restores access to the DFS share
* Access to non-DFS shares are unaffected
* Windows XP is unaffected
* DFS file share type is "Domain (Windows 2000 server mode)"

I'm guessing that last bullet is the culprit, but cannot confirm at this time.

On my corporate Win7 PC this update prevents me from connecting to Windows file
shares. I am troubleshooting to get more specifics, as my user profile has
redirected folders and we have our Exchange hosted and my Outlook would also
not start, but I did confirm that removal of this KB restored access and
re-installing it produced the same "no file access" result.

It may be an hour or two before I have more details but figured I should give
you guys a heads up ASAP.

BTW, Google Maps is now back and available to download for iOS devices. Grabbed

That's what David said, I can neither confirm or deny. It says so in the
article but...they also said the maps were way better too :-p

I thought this was reportedly resolved with 6.0.1?

FYI- Our Exchange guys say the help desk reported encountered some major
difficulties with this today...

http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2012/10/23/ios6-devices-erroneously-take-ownership-of-meetings.aspx

e.g- the "Additionally, the Apple iOS 6 device may incorrectly let the device
user (attendee) act as the meeting organizer. For example, the attendee can
send meeting updates or cancellations to all the original meeting attendees."
part in the associated KB article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2768774

As in one of the more significant events was that a high-level exec declined a
meeting and it got removed from >400 calendars.

ouch
