Re: Upgrading domain....how?
I like the way you describe the NEW controller once upgraded. It is important to keep in mind that there is a whole new naming scheme for M$ under 2000due to AD...and the revised M$ marketing strategy. PDC GCS and so on. NT (not anymore this is what scared people from the early days and still does)XP ect. - Original Message - From: Benjamin Winzenz [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: NT System Admin Issues [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 3:36 PM Subject: RE: Upgrading domainhow? Jon, I think you got things a bit mixed up. You cannot, repeat cannot, have a Windows 2000 BDC on an NT 4.0 network. They don't exist. Once you install a Windows 2000 DC, you are running Active Directory. You can still have downlevel NT 4.0 BDC's, and the W2K DC will act as the PDC Emulator, but understand that. Also, what is recommended, or at least one of the recommendations, is as I stated before, to upgrade your current NT 4.0 PDC to W2K, which will also install AD during the upgrade process and keep all user accounts and such intact. You then go from there. I will offer this from my reading doing a dcpromo will indeed install AD but... will not go native 2k. W2k assumes you are running a mixed network anyway. I also read that upgrading an existing NT4 machine was best done by blowing off NT and reloading from scratch W2k. MS recommends after setting up a W2k BDS on an existing NT4 network you shutdown the PDS (NT4 machine) and allow the W2k to work as a PDS. You should have a couple of days to test out the waters before committing to this. If it all crashes turn on the PDS allow the BDS to update the PDS then shutdown the BDS. You will be back to a NT net. Good luck though. I never tried it I just took every thing off line brought up the new PDS (W2k) and brought up the rest of the network. Folks, I have an NT4 domain that is part of my corporate group of domains. My company will probably not have a Win2K domain structure in place for another year or so, and I want to upgrade my domain to new servers with Win2K. I guess my question is, how is it best to accomplish this? I have a couple of NT4 servers (old 266Mhz machines now) and a couple of new servers with Win2K server installed as domain members. It's not as simple as running the dcpromo command, I don't think. Reading through tech notes from MS implies ways to migrate domains and upgrade NT4 boxes to Win2K, but I'm not sure that's what I am really looking for. Anyone have any suggestions to share? With all respect to Stu and not putting in to let this thread go crazy... We all enjoy our liberty. We are dealing with people who do not know what liberty is. They resent our way of life and wish to destroy it. Defending ourselves against that type of mindset does not require a look into a book of rules. This is not entirely about what is right and wrong as far as a response. This is about BASIC HUMAN SURVIVALif any of us knew that the next know on our door would destroy us or our loved ones, we would not waste time thinking we would act to protect ourselves. They (who else!) are not entitled to any considerations that our constitution may offer. I plead the Fifth is a common expression meaning I am not going to answer that, because it might get me in trouble. Whenever there is a major public criminal crisis, there are always those who advocate restricting these rights in the name of security or need. They do not seem to understand that the worst kind of crime is that inflicted by your own government against you. In this case, we can expect people to claim: - We should punish people without a trial, or even evidence - We should punish people who have committed no crimes - We should close our borders - Police should be able to search anyone at any time without a warrant - Police should be able to monitor private communications without a warrant Any of the above would violate the Bill of Rights. -- Ben Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] | The opinions expressed in this message are those of the author and do not | | necessarily represent the views or policy of any other person, entity or | | organization. Re: Airport security (was: The idiocy continues!)
One of my favorite pastimes is the airport. Any time I wanted to I could go sit within comfortable distance of any commercial airplane arriving/leaving the eastcoast. There are times when I was questioned by some poor guy making some minimal wage to drive around in a car asking people like me to leave. But that is as far as it goes. The airport is very lax in security. I can remember seeing the president arrive and you do not get to hang around too long then. I remember not long ago driving to the airport and paying to park under the terminal. Years ago they blocked off the underground parking and you could only park outside. The only cars allowed to sit under the terminal now are Livery Vehicles.(probably not now) For more than 35 years I have been through that same airport. It is ironic that the service industry is allowed into that secure space. I bet you they do not go through a proper security check. Or how many of them may have aided in the recent attack. Who knows.. People do not want to pay but when they have no other choice...they pay anyway. - Original Message - From: Andrew Baker [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: NT System Admin Issues [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, September 13, 2001 4:14 PM Subject: RE: Airport security (was: The idiocy continues!) If you took a poll last week about airplane/airport security, would there have been the same level of outcry? There is often a tendency to over-react in situations like this and suggest that every process in the equation is broken. I am not suggesting that airport security is stellar and could not be improved. However, to my knowledge, there was no particular breach of security that was taken advantage of, for this event. If anything, having an Air Marshall (or two) on board might have had a positive impact. Likewise, denying access to the cockpit would be a good idea. Many are calling for the government to take over airport security. Myself, I think that makes sense. One of the functions of government is to protect the people, i.e., to establish and maintain a police force. The government already patrols roads, trains, and general property. To me, it makes sense to extend that same protection to air travel. -- Ben Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] | The opinions expressed in this message are those of the author and do not | | necessarily represent the views or policy of any other person, entity or | | organization. Re: WAKE UP!!!!
There was a time that the US Marshals would ride on flights. I am not sure of the exact details but it was better than nothing. One of the news channels did a report last night where they got a person hired at the airport and within 2 days they were accessing secure areas of the airplane such as the cockpit..no extensive background check was performed on that new employee. Yes the ticket price is definitely going up. I understand that one of the biggest problems in the control tower (besides NT) is the fact that the controllers are burned out. I can see and smell the fires. Also the natural gas lines are feeding the flames. Plywood stretchers are being trucked in. Hi Jay, The governor and Rudy just had a press conference along with one of the FBI directors. Of coarse they are trying to concentrate on helping the injured people before getting deep into the investigation. The black boxes from the planes are the first order of business. Meanwhile many fires continue to burn because the fire department has to concentrate on the bigger ones first. My sympathy goes out to all of those who lost friends and family as I did. I was working with a client one block from World Trade and was suppose to go there the beginning of this week. Re: Active Directories Domains - Trusts
Mark, I added my GCS about 3 days ago. Sounds like I have the same setup as you but my NT 4 domain PDC is running SP5. I imported a LMhost file from the WINS console on the W2K server. I then broke the trust and re-established it again. Now I can use one user account to admin both domains.BUT Every now and then I do get the access denied message when trying to access the W2K side from the NT4 side. But, I can view all resources without a problem. I am working on finding out why. Post more of your successful leaps and bounds so I can follow. The NT Domain was added to the search path of the 2000 PDC and the same was done with the NT PDC (placed in the lmhost file, is there another place?). Both PDC are able to ping each other with no problems. As far as location, both are in the same building with the NT PDC in the MIS department and the 2000 PDC in the validation lab. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated and thank you for the ones you have mention. -Original Message- From: Kent Spencer [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2001 8:03 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: Active Directories Domains - Trusts .. Re: Active Directories Domains - Trusts
Yes by explicit domain trusts.one-way. I thought by default transitive trustrs were 2 way and by design were meant for trees in the same forest. All other trusts would be one-way like NT4. David - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: NT System Admin Issues [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, August 30, 2001 11:27 AM Subject: RE: Active Directories Domains - Trusts Native mode AD domains can communicate with NT4 domains and you can setup one-way and two-way trusts. However we installed the DCs in pre-Windows 2000 permissions because of the legacy clients and NT4 domains and servers. I can admin my legacy NT4 domain logged in with a W2K account and vice-versa if I want to. For example our Excahnge servers are in the W2K domain but still use the exchange service account form the old NT4 domain. We have changed the apsswords a couple of time already too, no problems. We do not really want to change the account since that is not trivial and since we are going to retire the exchange envionemnt anyway well before the migration is complete. Is it native or not
I added a W2K GCS to my network. Created a trust between the GCS and another PDC in another domain. From the NT4 domain I can load server tools and see the other W2K domain. If I log into the W2K server I can see the NT4 domain. Problem is from everywhere I am not able to perform admin actions on the W2k Domain. Is is as if the W2k server is not running in mixed mode.
