Someone else posted that you can copy the rdisk utility form NT 4 to W2K.
 Has anyone tried that?

 Hey Guys,

Steve Clark's (the genius - if I'm ever in the same city as him, I'll
buy him a beer) script for putting computers ERD's onto a different
server has made me wonder if anyone has some idea of how to do this for
 Win2K?

What I'm talking about is a script that automatically runs an rdisk
(which you can't do in Win2K) and then copies the result from the REPAIR
 directory to a different server...

 Any ideas? Hmmm?

 Cheers
 G.

I like the way you describe the NEW controller once upgraded.
It is important to keep in mind that there is a whole new naming scheme for
M$ under 2000due to AD...and the revised M$ marketing strategy.

PDC GCS and so on.

does)XP

 Jon,

I think you got things a bit mixed up. You cannot, repeat cannot, have a
Windows 2000 BDC on an NT 4.0 network. They don't exist. Once you
install
a Windows 2000 DC, you are running Active Directory. You can still have
downlevel NT 4.0 BDC's, and the W2K DC will act as the PDC Emulator, but
understand that. Also, what is recommended, or at least one of the
recommendations, is as I stated before, to upgrade your current NT 4.0 PDC
to W2K, which will also install AD during the upgrade process and keep all
user accounts and such intact. You then go from there.

I will offer this from my reading doing a dcpromo will indeed install AD
but... will not go native 2k. W2k assumes you are running a mixed network
anyway. I also read that upgrading an existing NT4 machine was best done
by
blowing off NT and reloading from scratch W2k. MS recommends after
setting
up a W2k BDS on an existing NT4 network you shutdown the PDS (NT4 machine)
and allow the W2k to work as a PDS. You should have a couple of days to
test out the waters before committing to this. If it all crashes turn on
the PDS allow the BDS to update the PDS then shutdown the BDS. You will
be
back to a NT net. Good luck though. I never tried it I just took every
thing off line brought up the new PDS (W2k) and brought up the rest of the
 network.

  Folks,

I have an NT4 domain that is part of my corporate group of domains. My
 company
  will probably not
have a Win2K domain structure in place for another year or so, and I
want
 to
  upgrade my domain
to new servers with Win2K. I guess my question is, how is it best to
 accomplish
this? I have a couple of
NT4 servers (old 266Mhz machines now) and a couple of new servers with
 Win2K
  server installed
as domain members. It's not as simple as running the dcpromo command, I
 don't
  think. Reading through
tech notes from MS implies ways to migrate domains and upgrade NT4 boxes
 to
  Win2K, but I'm not
sure that's what I am really looking for. Anyone have any suggestions
to
 share?

  Thanks,

The rule mandates that between any two nodes on the network, there can only
be a maximum of five segments, connected through four repeaters, or
concentrators, and only three of the five segments may contain user

You would need Gateway services for Netware plus IPX on

  Not knowing off-hand. I'd imagine they'd
dial in using DUN with ipx/spx protocol installed on the client machine
and then kick off the novell client. I think gateway services for netware may
have to be installed on your server ?? Again never done it just throwing it

When they dial into my W2K sever how do I get them to log into the

they use the Novell Client to dial in??

With all respect to Stu and not putting in to let this thread go crazy...

We all enjoy our liberty.
We are dealing with people who do not know what liberty is. They resent our
way of life and wish to destroy it.
Defending ourselves against that type of mindset does not require a look
into a book of rules.
This is not entirely about what is right and wrong as far as a response.
This is about BASIC HUMAN SURVIVALif any of us knew that the next know
on our door would destroy us or our loved ones,
we would not waste time thinking we would act to protect ourselves.
They (who else!) are not entitled to any considerations that our
constitution may offer. It was written for us ( people who wish to abide and
live in a free society)

I am no expert on politics but maybe that has helped to put us in this
vulnerable position. I refuse to be a prisoner in my own country. I have
been and will be back on the same war torn streets of Manhattan that most of
you have been reading about. I will walk them with high expectation of
keeping our freedom.
Whatever has to be done to keep it that way is to be seen...

Re: Airport security (was: The idiocy continues!)

2001-09-13 Thread Bartolini

One of my favorite pastimes is the airport. Any time I wanted to I could go
sit within comfortable distance of any commercial airplane arriving/leaving
the eastcoast.
There are times when I was questioned by some poor guy making some minimal
wage to drive around in a car asking people like me to leave. But that is as
far as it goes. The airport is very lax in security.
I can remember seeing the president arrive and you do not get to hang around
too long then.

I remember not long ago driving to the airport and paying to park under the
terminal. Years ago they blocked off the underground parking and you could
only park outside.
The only cars allowed to sit under the terminal now are Livery
Vehicles.(probably not now)

For more than 35 years I have been through that same airport. It is ironic
that the service industry is allowed into that secure space. I bet you they
do not go through a proper security check. Or how many of them may have
aided in the recent attack. Who knows..

People do not want to pay but when they have no other choice...they pay
anyway.

And what job were they supposed to be doing that they didn't?

If you took a poll last week about airplane/airport security, would there
have been the same level of outcry?

There is often a tendency to over-react in situations like this and
suggest
that every process in the equation is broken. I am not suggesting that
airport security is stellar and could not be improved. However, to my
knowledge, there was no particular breach of security that was taken
 advantage of, for this event.

If anything, having an Air Marshall (or two) on board might have had a
positive impact. Likewise, denying access to the cockpit would be a good
 idea.

The problem is that everyone wants to be secure, but they don't want to
spend any time or money to do it.

I have seen mentioned several times that the people supposedly

Many are calling for the government to take over airport security.

Myself, I think that makes sense. One of the functions of government

The
government already patrols roads, trains, and general property. To me,
it
makes sense to extend that same protection to air travel.

One of the news channels did a report last night where they got a person

I am sure it will hit the news soon.

  I completely agree.

Apparently, there are issues with the structure of the plane, and the

they
can be solved, but things are apparently not so simple as installing a
thicker door and a stronger lock.

Can anyone point out any specific things that airport security could
have done to avert the atrocities of 09/11/01?

   Yes.

  - Require inspection of all luggage and persons boarding aircraft.
  - Require passengers to show photo ID at the security gate.
  - Forbid un-ticketed people beyond the security gate.
  - Forbid allow any weapons or sharp objects in the passenger compartment.
  - Require aircraft crew to enter with the same checks as passengers.
  - Secure service areas against unchecked entry.
  - Require people entering service areas to show photo ID.
  - Require inspection of people and materials entering service areas.
  - Monitor service areas with closed-circuit cameras.
  - Patrol service areas with armed police.
  - Deploy a program of armed and uniformed police aboard every flight.
  - Supplement said police with random undercover agents.
  - Restrict and protect access to the flight deck, as already noted.

Replace the existing Air Traffic Control system with one that functions
correctly (their equipment is known to be inadequate for the tasks of the
past, let alone today), and track all flights at all times. Require
pilots
to remain in regular contact. If contact is lost, assume the flight may

I imported a LMhost file from the WINS console on the W2K server. I then
broke the trust and re-established it again. Now I can use one user account

Every now and then I do get the access denied message when trying to
access the W2K side from the NT4 side. But, I can view all resources without
a problem.
I am working on finding out why.
Post more of your successful leaps and bounds so I can follow.

Yes by explicit domain trusts.one-way.
I thought by default transitive trustrs were 2 way and by design were meant
for trees in the same forest.
All other trusts would be one-way like NT4.

Native mode AD domains can communicate with NT4 domains and you can setup
one-way and two-way trusts. However we installed the DCs in pre-Windows
2000
permissions because of the legacy clients and NT4 domains and servers. I
can
admin my legacy NT4 domain logged in with a W2K account and vice-versa if
I
 want to.

For example our Excahnge servers are in the W2K domain but still use the
exchange service account form the old NT4 domain. We have changed the
apsswords a couple of time already too, no problems. We do not really want
to
change the account since that is not trivial and since we are going to
retire
the exchange envionemnt anyway well before the migration is complete.

 Thanks

If you are using the ghost boot disk that the program creates I do not
think
a network redirector is included, meaning you cannot map drives. To create
a

You need to have netbios etc loaded. Try one of the disks from
  www.bootdisk.com

I was in a long a$$ meeting. Sorry.
No, I'm using the bootdisk that comes with 2001. It doesn't say
personal
edition. I tried the net use command, didn't work. My dos skills are
 rusty
  possibly.
I'll check out bootdisk.com. Never been there b4.
I just want the command to add to the autoexec.bat file. Norton makes
the
  disk for me.

Is there any easy way to print out a current list of all NT user accounts?
I did print screens, but there has to be an easier way.
