Our network was hit with the Nimba virus. All of the computers in our
control are protected. Rouge computers, however, can map to our drives
using the 'connect as', 'connect using different user name', or
passthrough authentication. These rouge computers keep writing the virus
back up to our shares.

Is there any way to prevent this?

Looks like those of us who want off the list will have to set up an
auto-delete rule. This list is so full of noise, its not worth it. There are
much more professional, and useful, lists out there.

Why don't you down the server and try to ping the address and name. My
guess is that the IP address will still respond. Hunt down the culprit
(who, by the way, is getting an error message also and not reporting it) and
kill them. Show no mercy. My 2 cents.

I am getting Duplicate name found when I restart a NT server. I know that
the name is not a duplicate. The only way I can get the server back on
and working is to unplug the network connections and reboot the system.
Once I login I can reconnect the network connections and all is well. Any
ideas of what would make the server think there was a duplicate name?

Has anybody put some serious stops on 24/7
availability of internet services in your firms ? In light of what I am sure
we are all looking at over the next several months have folks considered or
put in place automated mechanisms that shut down internet services and
internet mail ? I am thinking that as is often the case we are waiting for sig
files from multiple AV vendors especially during the we hours of the morning
and that it would be prudent to have the ability or policy in place that shuts
internet access and pipe off during off hours. I realize in multi time zone
and large organization you don't have a china mans chance to get mgt to make
this policy, but in smaller firms this would potentially assist in keeping the
flood of crap at the door while we/you dotted your is and crossed those
  Ts.
Any thoughts and existing efforts would be great

As much as I don't necessarily have a problem with this, the
real question will be what happens when someone makes an offhand,
attempt-at-humor comment that sets off whatever "filters" they're looking

Write my Congressman about what? About implementing laws

infringement on my civil rights? What are they
doing that your employer or network admins, who could use benign e-mails in a much more malicious manner, don't already do.
While I don't like it that we have go to these
lengths, I feel it's necessary for our National
Security. Besides, I've nothing to hide and if I had something to hide I would not be likely to send it via e-mail.
Maybe, just maybe, if we had this in place a while
back, some 6,000+ people, some of which may have even

RE: ID Monitoring??

2001-08-22 Thread Bryann Thomas

Is he
connecting to network resources and then changing his password? W2K will
re-establish network drives at a regular interval using the credentials that
were supplied when first connected. If he's changed his password since manually
connecting to shares, this can cause a lockout. We've had a few users here
having the same problem. Always logout and back in again after a password change
to be on the safe side.
