RE: NT4 Registry entry for SP level ?

2001-09-26 Thread Chris Bodnar

If anyone
is interested I found my answer:

To
determine the current Windows NT Service Pack level installed, you can query
the registry, useful for script automation, using the following Windows NT
Registry hack:

Hive:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Key:
system\CurrentControlSet\control\windows

Name:
CSDVersion

Type:
REG_DWORD

Value:
0x100 SP1

Value:
0x200 SP2

Value:
0x300 SP3

Value:
0x400 SP4

Value:
0x500 SP5

Value:
0x600 SP6

This is from the MS website FAQ: http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/support/faqs/sp6faq.asp#1.4

SP6a's install program marks a registry key you can check.

If HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix\Q246009\Installed =
1, it's SP6a.

The key won't exist if it's SP6.

Not too sure about previous versions

IE Update MS01-027, command line switches ?

2001-09-26 Thread Chris Bodnar

Does anyone know if there is an undocumented command line switch for q295106.exe
(Security Update MS01-027). I am scripting this and there is a /Q switch for
quiet mode, but it still prompts the user to reboot the machine. I would like a
switch that forces the machine to reboot as with the HotFixes m f switches.

Any suggestions?

Go to the Ascend FTP site (ftp.ascend.com)
and download their configuration client. I believe that it only works on
Win9x. Plug the pipeline into your network and the configuration client
will be able to automatically detect it and change the IP address.

Or, you could use a console cable for the
configuration.

James,

Here is a

Also look

Havent tried
to contact them lately, and Im not sure if this will help you, but I just did
a reinstall of my Officescan server yesterday. It wasnt too bad easy, actually.
You back up the HTTDB and LOG directories, uninstall the Officescan server,
then reinstall it, and replace the new HTTDB and LOG directories with the
backed up ones voila all of your clients appear (you can also use
ipxfer.exe in the client login script to get them associated with the server
again if they dont reappear).

There was a
Trend knowledgebase article on their site, but I cant think of it offhand. If
you do a search for the Officescan product, with reinstall as a keyword,
youll find it something about Reinstalling the Officescan server.

Is the Exchange 2000 included with SBS 2000 a full version or does it have

Subject: RPC too busy?

Often, when I need to re-boot the NT server (4.0 SP6) on the first (or first
couple) try, I can't run anything. I get The RPC is too busy to complete
the task and no users can get to their email.

After a retry or two, it usually comes back together, but it's not right.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hello All,

My print service is acting up. When user sends a print job, it doesn't get
spooled and sits in the queue. An error message is flashed on the server
complaining about I/O error on the printer. Again the spooling starts
automatically and prints. The gap between error and printing time could be
30
seconds to 2 minutes. We are using Lexmark printers with Markvision printer

I have used (read, used
in production and administered from the ground up)two different products
that have VOIP capability, and have trained on a third.

The Altiserv package from
Altigen is my favorite, and is well worth investigating - I'd purchase it
before anything else.

The Televantage package
from Artisoft is OK, and worth putting into the mix as a comparison.

The 3com product is
interesting, but I don't have enough experience

I've seen the Cisco
product, but not recently, although it also looked interesting.

The first two, from
Altigen and Artisoft, allow you to place standard analog phones on the desktop,
and centralize the VOIP in the server, which incidentally both work well under
Win2K. They also have a multitude of other features which make office
automation easier.

The other two require you
(at my last experience with them) to have proprietary phones, which were much
more expensive. This may have changed for either or both of Cisco and 3Com
products, however, as I have not seen them in a while.

computer got an IP from the DHCP server but that was it. No mapping drives, no

the IP and MAC address would show up in the arp cache. I uninstalled and

Exchange: 9215 error

2001-08-30 Thread Chris Bodnar

Exchange 5.5 SP2
NT 4.0 SP6a

We have an X.400 connector setup over dial-up with one of our vendors and
they are telling us that over the last 2 weeks they have been experiencing a
problem where the connection seems to be terminating abnormally and the
messages are transferred to our system, but backing up on their system,
because they are not receiving a confirmation that the messages have been
transferred. I have found a number of articles that seem very similar. The
one that most closely describes our situation is Q193380. But the only Event
ID associated with this on our Exchange server is 9215. The relevant KB
articles referencing 9215 are:

Q170056
Q154301
Q164400
Q182619
Q261251

But none seem to really pertain to this situation. I am considering going to
SP4, but I found mention of a similar error that only manifests itself with
SP3 or 4. So I am a little leery of doing this on a production server.

Has anyone come across this before?

Why dont
you want to use WINS, it would solve you problem?

You can
use LMHOSTS files as a replacement.

There are
a few issues with running the logon scripts. How many DCs? If more than one are you sure the logon script
exists on all DCs? On the Win 9x clients are they using the windows login
first? If so logon scripts wont run. Those clients must bypass the Windows
logon when booting up, and then when they validate against the VPN server it
will prompt them to logon , and run the logon scripts.

PPTP demand dial interface

2001-08-27 Thread Chris Bodnar

Has anyone successfully set this up as described in Q177335 ?

I have setup a regular demand dial interface using a modem before using
RRAS, so I am familiar with the procedure.

We have a remote location that will soon be acquiring a 256K fractional T1
for Internet access. Relatively small office, ~25 users. I am trying to
decide weather or not to set this up as a separate subnet and have them use
the RRAS server with this type of configuration.

My other option would be to have each machine initiate a PPTP connection. My
other considerations in this scenario are if the RRAS server is a BDC and an
Exchange server, what will the performance be like.

Our connection here at corporate is a full T1.

All comments welcome.

Hello All,

I am new to this list, and I am hoping someone can help me with a little
annoying problem I am having. I cannot seem to connect from Server A to a
remote Server B with Event Viewer to view the Event log. Both machines
are Win2K SP2, no AD, it is an NT 4 Domain. When I type the remote computer
Name or IP address in the Select Computer Box, I get the following message..
Unable to connect to computer Servername. The error was: The network
Path is not found.

Funny thing is, I can connect to this PC in Computer Management, I can stop
and start services, view the shares, Local Users and Groups, but if I click
on Event Viewer, I get the same message. I can ping the IP, the name, map a
drive and everything, so the connectivity is definitely there. Server B can
view Server A's event log, but ServerA cannot connect to Server B. Also on
Server A I can connect to all the other NT4 machine's event logs, and I have
also VPN'd to a home machine, and was able to connect to that event log
running on Win2K SP2 also. I have tried this with my account which is a
member of Domain Admins, as well as the Domain Admin Account itself with
same results. Is there some remote access type service that's needed, or
policy or something that may have been configured on Server B that doesn't
allow remote access to the event log? I've searched KB for this error also
and came up empty. Server A is my workstation, so I really would like to be
able to view all the other server logs from my desk. Any ideas are greatly
appreciated.

TIA,
-Lana

as slick a group policy, but if you install the printers as local printers they
will be machine specific instead of user specific. You can then change the port
to point to the network printer.

Subject: Printing Issue

Hello,

i was
wondering if anyone knows a way to have machines print to a specific printer no
matter who logs on. for example we have a computer lab and each student
has their own account. they have a roaming profile so they can log into
any comuter in the school and retain settings etc. server is w2k sp2 and
workstations are w2k pro and nt 4.0. is there a way so when they log into
one of the lab computers it only captures the printers in the lab, when they go
to the library they only capture the library printers, etc? could it
possibly be in group policy for machines? any help is greatly
appreciated..

RE: Domain Issue

2001-08-17 Thread Chris Bodnar

I may have missed this, but you mentioned re-adding the computer to the
domain several times. Do you delete the account first from Server Manager?

Also how many domain controllers? Any across WAN links? How long are you
waiting? If multiple DC's have you forced a Synchronization?

was the computer account removed from the domain by mistake, or is there two
workstations with the same IP or WS name?

That is correct. I am able to ping devices on the entire network from the
NTWS. Just unable to log onto the domain.

What do you mean, they check out? From the affected PC, are you able to
perform simple name resolution tasks, such as pinging by name, etc.

DC's are all up as no one is having problems logging in. I have also
unjoined and rejoined the domain several times and the issue persists.

One more thing, I am unable to connect to the workstation using USRMGR or
SRVMGR from an NT Server box. -Original Message-

check to see if you domain controllers are up.
(see if you can logon from another box)

Goodmorning All,

I was wondering if someone can give me an idea why I'm getting this message
when attempting to log on to my domain.

The computer log you on now because the domain DomainName is not
available.

This is from an NTWS4/SP6a.

I can connect to any and all network resources, but I'm unable to log onto
the domain from the workstation. The only way I can log on is on the local
box.

Any suggestions?

TIA

With KixTart you can do it like this:

$SP=ReadValue(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion,CDSVersion)

IF $SP=Service Pack 1
Do Something
ENDIF

Many moons ago I saw a hack for NT to
display the computername and username below the My Computer Icon -
we have implemented this on all our NT4 boxes and now we are starting to
move to Win2K - I'm sure I've seen the hack somewhere but can't seem to find
it. can anyone save me a sad lonely night in front of my Laptop searching
the web?

TIA
