Can you find that file in windows? I have it in a couple of locations,
BartPE\PROGRAMS and oem1 within the UBCD4Win folder structure.

Also, I think this may crop up if using an OEM CD XP SP2 (and SP3?) from
Dell.

RE: Monitoring Software

2010-12-30 Thread Haralson, Joe (GE Comm Fin, non-GE)
I agree with Jim about IPMONITOR of Solar Winds. I've used it for years and it
was a great tool. However, the Solar Winds Orion Network Performance Monitor
takes it to the next level. Take a look at Solar Winds, they have a lot of
great tools and some are free.

Just my opinion as someone who has tangled with SCOM recently. You can do a
whole lot with Ops Mgr (a WHOLE LOT), but if short learning curve and friendly
GUI are two of your pre-reqs - you may want to look elsewhere. If you can
dedicate some time and training to learning it - it is a cool product.

Personally, I'm still a fan of IPMonitor. I believe Solar Winds owns them now.
IPMonitor did everything I asked of it and was an easy set up with a clean
GUI. It did not provide native insight into MS applications - it primarily
monitored ping and service availability, but you could have it watch and alert
based on event log entries. If we did not already have a large investment in
SCOM here, I would be seriously looking into bringing IPMonitor on board.

Hello

We are looking to buy a monitoring software for end to end monitoring.

We are not sure if MS Operations Manager is the best choice out of the box ?

or

any other products you have experience with I feel the product has to be
enterprise level ?

Central Data center + local site offices too..

Monitoring services for example:

1. Exchange 2010

2. SQL monitoring.

3. Windows 2008 R2

4. Vmware 4.x

5. network links i..e mix of switches of HP L3 + Cisco 6500.

6. Bandwidth monitoring on interfaces if we have the need for it and prepare
web graphs (mrtg like )

7. Web services..

8.

Some concerns:

---

1. On site staff are not very highly skilled so the more GUI friendly the
better. :)

cheers

Why not just use the builtin Windows Backup, if you have Vista or 7?
Write to an external USB drive or a set of DVDs. To restore, boot from
the Windows install media and choose to do a Complete PC Recovery. It's
free and supported by the OS vendor.

Yeah... that's a trick I've seen *one* time. :-) Apparently the
programmer wasn't intelligent enough to build a hidden registry entry

IIRC that would reinstall the scheduled tasks, so double-check that as

well. I think they were in the root of the C:\ drive.

From what I've seen online in the past- File/Print sharing off (no
server or workstation service) probably most likely culprit. Also seen
it attributed to firewall or other hardening configs.

2.1 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why am I seeing error Could not resolve the computer name:
name. Please specify computer name, domain\computer, or an IP address.?

This error is common when scanning based on an IP address range. This is
because MBSA will convert the range into a list of specific IP addresses
for that range and attempt to resolve each IP address into the
associated NetBIOS computer name. When that name resolution cannot be
performed because the computer is switched off, or the IP address is not
in use, this error will be returned.

The error can also happen when using a domain name of domain members are
not accessible on the network, such as a laptop computer roaming outside
the wireless network, or a desktop computer that has been shut down.

If you specify a DNS fully qualified domain name (FQDN) as the domain to
be scanned, you will also see these errors. In that case, you need to
use the NetBIOS compatible domain name.

Thanks to all. I finally got the solution thanks to Bob Free tip about WSUS. I
ended up performing the following on the boxes with this error:

1. validate that your proxy setting is set .
2. Made sure I had current Microsoft Update software.
3. Based on your level of Security you will need to add some microsoft trusted

If you P2V the server or indeed the template you are building from, you
will see some issues. We have some boxes like this and once they go over
ten users or so they get nasty.

With a clean build you should get 30 or so

However, some applications we use cause Citrix to run slowly, physical
or virtual.

 Jeremy;
I've been using Mozy Pro for some time and like the product.
However, it does take a while for the initial backup to complete but
after that the backups are great. We do throttle the bandwith. However,
we only use for laptop users. I recommend to laptop users that the best
time to backup machine is while they are sleeping or eating dinner at
home. Users only need to connect to internet, no need to vpn to network
it just creates more hops. I schedule all machines to backup after 7pm,
however, users can start on there own. The only other issue I have with
product is when switching to new machine. The documentation is very
confusing, be careful.

Sam,

Good to know. I'm thinking of deploying something very simple to just
backup office files so when a user's hd dies we can recover the data.
This is also only for those pita users who refuse to store their data on
the server (read executives) and for my true road warriors for whom it
makes sense to carry their life on their laptop. I've decided that
versioning prob wouldn't be an option I'd consider.

The only reason I'm even considering it is 1- I'm buying BUE for at
least part of my backup solution and DLO comes with it and 2-the agent
licensing is cheap and 3-it would keep the data in-house and not be in
the cloud even though I know it's encrypted.

I've installed Mozy on my laptop for a test and was disappointed in the
upload speeds. Prob b/c I asked it to back up a lot of data. I do
believe it can do delta changes to PST files, though, correct?

doable, but no thanks at this point.

I gave it up, and scripted my own solution. Been working like a champ

for over 2 years. It syncs all Laptops and Desktops to a local USB

For really remote/field users, I use Mozy Pro. It's about $5 a user
 per month. Priceless.
