disappearing from the winnt dir

I am
having a sort of weird problem on one of my NT4.0 SP6a servers. A while back I
had to clean the server - chkdsk - seemed to work ok.

After
that this problem keeps occurring. One day I noticed that the files -
notany directories just files - in the c:\winnt directory were gone
except for two of them. I copied the files from another identical NT box in to
this server's winnt directory. A day or so later they were gone again. I copied
them into the dir again, a day later they are gone. I KNOW that the server does
not have any viruses. I can only figure that the server may have a corrupt file
system and needs to be cleaned once more.

Any
suggestions?

Here are a few "Administrivia"
pointers.

1)
Lurk for a week before you dive into threads.
2)
SecureIIS nailed down our Lyris server a bit too much. Unsubs were
sometimes
impossible. We think we got that
fixed now.
3)
Check Andrew Baker's FAQ before you ask a question. I have added it to the
footer.
4)
Filter all postings into a folder with an outlook rule. Sort by thread.
Delete whole threads
 that are not
interesting.
5)
We have asearchable archive. You can get there via the "unsub link" in
the footer.

And remember these golden
rules:

ON
TOPIC, NO NOISE, andFRIENDLY.

Thanks.

I really ate to post OT like this, but I can't seem to find the answer
to this one.

How do I configure Outlook (XP/2002) to automatically send out-of-office
replies if I'm NOT using Exchange as my e-mail server? Is this even
possible? I've found lots of info on how to do it with Exchange, but not
without.

And if it's possible to do without Exchange, how do I go about making
sure that I don't send them to mailing lists? I've been so critical of
others who do this that I would be terribly embarrassed to do it myself!

RE: rcv unreadable files via e-mail

2001-09-25 Thread Ian Kelly
Title: Message

Outlook has a setting in Tools, Options, Mail Format (I
believe)
In Exchange you can set it as described
below...

Specifying the Default Attachment Content Format

Use the Internet Mail property page to specify whether outbound
messages with attachments will be encoded using Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions (MIME) or uuencode. This option can be specified by e-mail domain.
These settings override the default format.
Settings configured in client applications can override the default setting
and the settings specified by e-mail domain. If the client specifies no content
format option and no match is found in the e-mail domain options, the default
setting will be used.

NoteMessage content should be set for
UUENCODE when transferring messages to Microsoft Mail 3.x with
Microsoft Mail Gateway to SMTP.

  Select the Internet Mail tab.
Under Attachments (Outbound), select MIME or UUENCODE.
Choosing MIME means that all attachments will be encoded using MIME,
except when the client software overrides the option. If a MIME message is
delivered to a non-MIME-aware client, the attachment may not be usable.

Option
Description

Plain text
A plain text MIME body part is generated for the message. If
HTML is also selected, Microsoft Exchange Server provides both
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and plain text in a MIME
  multipart/alternative message.

HTML
A MIME body part in HTML is generated for the message. If Plain
text is also selected, Microsoft Exchange Server provides both HTML
and plain text in a MIME multipart/alternative message. HTML is an
Internet standard that enables rich-text formatting such as bold, color,
and italic to appear in messages.

Binhex
Renders the message body as text with any attachments encoded by the
BinHex method, which is commonly used in the Macintosh operating system to
encode 8-bit data transmitted on the Internet.
For more information about MIME and uuencode, see Microsoft Exchange
Server Concepts and Planning. For more information about e-mail domain
options, see "Specifying Message Content by E-mail Domain" later in this
chapter.

Subject: DISABLING ACCESS TO UNWANTED SUBNET

I'd like to be able to disable my NT box from being able to reach a
certain subnet that is connected via a router. This particular NT box
needs access to the router, but not all of the subnets. I don't have
admin
control of the router,
so I need to do it from NT. Is there an NT route command that would
allow me to block the unwanted subnet or any other ways via NT?

Thanks All,

Ontario gets down about -10 most days and has gone as low as about-30 or
40 overnight - trust me though, there were days the UK felt

On
the other hand it gets up in the high 30's during the summer...probably the same

Vancouver is much more temperate all year round - bit warmer tan the uk

Cost

Hi,
I changed our firewall IP address on Friday. It's a Checkpoint
Firewall-1. Today, everything works great except some of my users like
to check hotmail email accounts, and we can't get any of the hotmail or
passport sites to pull up. Some of my buddies say that their hotmail is
working great. Any idea why changing my IP would not allow hotmail to
work? Thanks in advance.

RE: ISS and NT password crap

2001-09-22 Thread Ian Kelly

Usually IE (and I am assuming that's what you're using to connect to
whatever site you're talking about) prmpts for a password when it
cannot detect that the site is part of the local intranet (again
assuming that it is in your case as you give no info)
You have 2 options - make sure your TCP/IP / DNS / WINS / networking is
all correct domain-wise OR go into IE, tools, internet options,
Security, Local Intranet, Sites, Advanced, and add the URL to the zone.
No more password prompts.

I
use POW too. You can add to its list of 'known' pop-ups and I've had no problems
with it. Of course you can also just disable Javascript to stop them happening -
of course half the web will probably cease funtioning for you if you do that
;)

There are a bunch of freeware utils that seem to work quite nicely for
getting rid of any and all pop-up ad banners. I like pop-up stopper the
best. Does exactly what it professes, and is easy to circumvent if
needed, just hold down Ctrl key or double-click on it. Haven't found any

Splash screens are definately a pain. In Windows 2K
server you can define a Group Policy Object (GPO) that can add the box
in when a person hits crtl-alt-del. Does anyone know how to disable
mutlitple pop up browers you get when going to particular websites?
They areused for advertisements and there seems to be no setting in IE
or Netscape that I can find to disable them.

Depending on Dan's definition of "splash screen" that could also be
done via group policy. You can define "Message text for users
attempting to logon". That will throw up a text screen after the
user hits ctrl-alt-del. They have to "ok" the screen before getting
  the credentials box.

I have been asked to do two things.
1. Present a splash screen
that everyone will see for 5 or 10 seconds during the logon or boot.
2. Change everyone's
desktop wallpaper to some uniform graphic.
I am looking for suggestions and would appreciate any
help. I have previously created mandatory
wallpaper using the registry editor and logon scripts.

I
use POW too.

Haven't found any
Microsoft info that will allow the same thing. Check out http://download.cnet.com/downloads/1,10150,0-1-103-0-1-7,00.html?tag=srchqt=popup+stoppercn=ca=1(link

I am looking for suggestions and would appreciate any

RE: has anyone used doubletake successfully?

2001-09-14 Thread Ian Kelly

I used it for exactly that situation. The data transfer is real time and
I experienced no data loss in failover testing. The transition took less
than a minute (probably less than 30 seconds actually) with minimal
hassle reconnecting to the backup machine from the web server (we use
separate boxes for IIS and SQL obviously).
I looked at one or 2 other products and decided on Double Take bacuse it
was the only one that actually worked! I figured that was cause enough
to use it. The interface is easy to use, setup is pretty simple and data
transfer was quick (even the initial mirror of all data)

I'd like to know if you've ever had to failover to the other server and
how quickly and smoothly, if at all that went?

Also, did you look at any other products or solutions before deciding on
Double Take and, if so, why did you decide on Double Take?

I understand that my situation may differ but I'm looking at using a web
server (IIS) and SQL 7.0 on NT or 2000 as the operating system (depends
on when the decisions are made) and data will need to be replicated and
if the primary server goes down there should be as quick and smooth as
possible a transition to the backup machine. I've had personal
experience with NT Cluster server and, for this application, the
failover takes too long. We are hoping to minimize transaction loss as
much as possible.

RE: Using W2K RAS to connect to a Novell 5.1 Network

2001-09-13 Thread Ian Kelly
Title: Message

Not a precise answer, but here are my
thoughts having worked with a mixed network in my last job:

Not sure IPX would be needed ifall
your servers areNetware 5, and your network is entirely
TCP/IP
The Gateway service for Netware requires a
user (or is it Group?) called NTGATEWAY onyour Novell Box with Administrator
rights (we used NDS corporate as Netware held all user accounts)
Using the Novell client should give your
secure logins but I couldn't say where in the process you'd use it - i'd guess
after the dial in has connected successfully to your W2K box

Not knowing off-hand. I'd imagine they'd
dial in using DUN with ipx/spx protocol installed on the client
machine and then kick off the novell client. I think gateway services for
netware may have to be installed on your server ?? Again never done it just

  Windows 2000
laptops with Outlook 2000 dialling in via Radius Service connecting to
Exchange 5.5 SP4 have trouble sending e-mails or changing calender items and
probably some other problems too. Exactly the same setup but with NT 4.0
laptops works perfectly. (The w2k laptops used to be NT4 of course and did the
  deed.)

  Tried all kinds of
different settings in Outlook and manage to squeeze a small mail in rtf format
past, but anything bigger or with a more demanding format is a no go. If you
have a meeting reminder popping up, you can not dismiss it or send it back to
sleep or anything else. Sometimes I think typing too fast is already too much.

  Outlook window
goes into a temporary freeze and then brings up the "Difficulties connecting
to Exchange Server" msg. (summarized we all know the usual msg., is a bit
  longer ..)

  Any ideas?

Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on? There is no virus, not

Yes, I'm on 5.02 now, it was an earlier version that caused the blank

I had the exact same problem with IE6. I started Netscape, it went off
to get the QT update and after that finished both browsers work fine

RE: SMS 2.0 SQL 2K

2001-08-31 Thread Ian Kelly

It's good for use in development areas where buying multiple servers
makes no sense with a limited user count, and also because you can
create SQL servers using different sort orders or character sets all on
the same machine

Would there be any advantage to running multiple instances? Or is
there
some 3rd party software that requires it?I cant think of a good
reason
right off.Why not just put up another server if you need more than
one
sql?

Paul,

With sql2k you can run multiple instances on the same box. This means
that you can have more then one sql server running on the same box. All
you really need is to name each installation a different name. With SMS
you are required to use the default installation or the first
installation as the server that holds the sms databases. Usually the
default installation is the server name and that is probably why it
requires this. Hope this helps.

Okay, i found something saying that SQL 2K works with SMS 2.0. Now I
have another question about the below statement: SQL Server 2000 is
fully supported in Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2)
with the following limitations:
* Only the default SQL Server instance is supported for use as
Systems Management Server site databases. Additional instances can be
used for other applications that support instancing. What the hell do
they mean by instances, could someone elaborate? TIA!!!

 Hello All,

I am doing some research on working with SMS 2.0. I know I can work
with it on Windows 2000 using the latest SMS service packs but what
about using SQL 2000 instead of SQL 7? I am searching M$'s site right
now and have yet to find an answer? Can someone confirm if this would
work and where I can find more info on this setup? TIA!!

Sorry about the cross posting.

We don't have a lot of specifics on it, but there appears to be a new
worm on the loose. The payload is a typical Melissa-style worm, where
its only action is to send mail to all members of the GAL, with the
following
message:
Hi, how are you ? I am fine here. Please read the page
http://pcControl.tripod.com/ to get some knowledge and prevent somebody

hack you. Forword this mail to help all your friends too.

Its plain text, and carries no executables with it, but I haven't
visited the website yet. More info to follow, but there is zero
information on the web about it at this point.

Subject: Scheduling a Defrag in 2000!

Does anybody know how to schedule a defrag in 2000? I am able to do it in 9x
because the defrag app is defrag.exe, but under 2K it is a MMC. When I goto
scheudle a task I dont see it as an available app. I do see that I can use
scandisk, disk cleanup, etc but the most crucial one(being defrag) isn't an
option. Is there a way to schedule this app to run at a certain time. I have
a client who does alot of work on his machine and needs to run defrag at
regular intervals and doesn't do it manaully as he should. I would like to
get it scheduled so I dont get bothered by his laptop being slow. Any help!
