RE: Badging systems
Here in New Hampshire we use a local (Mass.) company, One Source Security They handle the badges, card readers, card swipe, integration with AD, video recording, etc. From: Tom Miller [mailto:tmil...@sfgtrust.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 27, 2013 9:12 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Badging systems I'm in the market for a new badge system. We are a food production company with several facilities. Each facility currently has disparate systems for staff that allow them entry into parking lots, exterior doors (some with magnetic locks), some interior doors. Criteria: - swipe units must be environmentally hardy: very hot or very cold for exterior units. Some units would be inside freezing or near freezing cooling units. - Active Directory integration would be a bonus, although not required. - Bonus: the ability to interface with external systems such as timekeeping, ADP payroll, etc - Centralized management: management of devices here in HQ and configuration may replicate/reside on a local controller. - Local support on the East Coast and Central regions of USA critical. We currently use the badges for photo ID as well as access. Most systems seem to accommodate this nowadays. At my last place I used Hirsch systems and they worked okay, but I had issues with remote controllers. So I'm looking to at least learn what the rest of you use. From: Richard McClary [mailto:richard.mccl...@aspca.org] Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 11:13 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: NTBackup will no longer run as a scheduled task Greetings! We have a library of substances on a server (really old - Dell PE-2650). It has an Adaptec card and a Dell StoreVault(?) LTO2 drive. For years it has been backing the library pre-dawn, M-F using NTBackup as a Scheduled Task. [Windows 2003 SP2] This broke last week. The Events log showed that the system was unable to find the script associated with the job... OK, I go and create the script again (in NTBackup, but finishing with scheduling it to run weekly, each M-F). I right click it and select Run now. NTBackup starts to open, then it vanishes. I check EventLogs, and I see no errors. I repeat the steps above running NTBackup manually, The backup process runs with no issues. Googling, I learned of Scheduled Tasks logs. This is not useful: AnToxSubstances.job (ntbackup.exe) Started 3/28/2012 1:45:01 AM AnToxSubstances.job (ntbackup.exe) Finished 3/28/2012 1:45:17 AM Result: The task completed with an exit code of (0). Other scheduled tasks appear to be running successfully. So, why is it when I create a job in NTBackup, it runs if I click Run now; but if I save it as a scheduled task (and then try to run it from the list of tasks), it fails immediately? Again, this had been running with no such issues for several years (up until last week). Thanks! -- Richard D. McClary Jr Infrastructure Architect, Information Technology Group ASPCA(r) 1717 S. My domain account is in the local Admins group. I am having difficulty encrypting my D: drive with PGP Whole Disk Encryption; it tells me there's no valid volume. Since I don't have anything on that volume I care about, I figure I will just delete the whole partition, and start over again. Except that I can't. I can't format it (I get an unknown error, and nothing in the Event logs, except Event 1, VDS Basic Provider, which - according to MS - can be safely ignored. Dunno why I get that; I'm not using the Hyper-V that the KB talks about ...). I can't delete the partition; I get Virtual Disk Manager:Access is Denied. If I boot with a UBCD4WIN CD, I can delete the partitiion, and re-create it fine. But booting back into Win 7 gives me the same error, so it can't be related to the actual disk partitioning; must be something in Windows. But I can't find out what. I have no errors access drive D: - I can write to it, read from it, run programs from it, etc. All works as it should. I just can't figure out why I get the Access Denied message. I look at the security of the drive, and it seems right to me (local PC\Administrators has FULL access). Any clues as to where to go next? There's no errors in the Event Log, and no errors accessing the drive ... except when I want to go delete the partition or format the drive ... ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~ --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to listmana...@lyris.sunbeltsoftware.com with the body: unsubscribe ntsysadmin ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~ --- To manage subscriptions click here: http://lyris.sunbelt-software.com/read/my_forums/ or send an email to listmana...@lyris.sunbeltsoftware.com with the body: unsubscribe ntsysadmin

There may be a few tricks you can use to force some of these (login scripts, remote ssh, etc.) but I'm sure you're more interested in something a little more centralized. If you want the Apple solution, check out Open Directory and Apple Remote Desktop. Open Directory is a component of Mac OS X Server, and it is Apple's attempt at a directory service ala Active Directory, but for Macs. If you do go this route, I recommend joining the Macs to both your Active Directory and the Open directory at the same time. Have your user's login using their AD credentials, while the Macs get their settings from OD. This is what's know in the mac IT circles as the Golden Triangle. Apple Remote Desktop is, at first glance, your basic remote desktop app. But, it's also your software deployment suite and your software inventory. (As an aside, I wish there was an equivalent to Apple Remote Desktop for windows PCs. Perhaps there is, but not without a per-client cost.) Have a .pkg that needs to be installed? Install it silently on every computer you can see online. Need it installed on offline computers? Set up ARD to do it automatically when it sees the Macs are seen on the network. These solutions are fairly inexpensive, thanks to the aggressive price drops by apple. You need a Mac running Lion (Costs depend on weather you have this already and could be $0), the Lion Server update from apple ($49.99) and optionally Apple Remote Desktop ($79.99, unlimited clients). If you don't want to go with the Apple provided solution, there are other methods of making this work. Check out Puppet from Puppet Labs and ADmitMac from Thursby. --- Now that that's said, we here have not moved to Mac OS X Lion (10.7). As of their most recent patch, it appears they have finally resolved some of their active directory integration issues. We as a district are moving away from Macs, simply because of their initial costs are difficult to bear. Supporting a Mac's software is easy. Supporting the hardware can be a nightmare. RE: Windows 7 Black Screen
Good Morning, I know with some of the Win7 machines I have done, it's an activation issue After activating Windows, the background images return...strange, yes I know From: Wilhelm, Scott [mailto:swilh...@mcs.k12.ny.us] Sent: Wednesday, August 11, 2010 7:06 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Windows 7 Black Screen We are currently setting up multiple labs with a Windows 7 image, and after working out most of the bugs, we're currently stuck with an issue with the black screen that seems to plague a lot of Windows 7 users. When we log in, with or without a privledged user, the background images is removed and there's just a black background with the rest of the OS loaded fine. We have tried the shell fix by Previx, which ended up blowing away our dontdisplaylastusername group policy (don't ask me how it superceded it...still can't figure it out), which we had to reset on each machine. After hacking it and trying all sorts of fixes, we decided to reimage the machines. Which, still leaves the issue unresolved. Out of 20 computers, only 6 of them did not have a black screen after being reimaged, all with the exact same hardware, image, etc. Has anyone found a fix to the black screen? Thank you. RE: Portable A/C for computer room?
HI David, We have used portable A/C units in the past. You would need to purchase a unit that has a way to pump the water out instead of collecting in a condensation cup Our only issue was when the cup filled up, the unit shut off and the room of course got hot. Good Luck. I am looking for suggestions on a portable air conditioner for my server room. Room is 9' x 13' and currently has a Mr. Slim AC unit in it. In the event of a power outage, I am planning on using a portable generator to run a portable AC unit to keep things cool. From what I've seen on Lowes.com and other places, 11,000 BTU units are under $500. Any thing else I need to look for when getting one of these? . ~ Finally, powerful endpoint security that ISN'T a resource hog! ~ ~ http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Business/VIPRE-Enterprise/ ~image001.gifimage002.jpg
