Subject: Files keep disappearing from the winnt dir

I am having a sort of weird problem on one of my NT4.0 SP6a servers. A while
back I had to clean the server - chkdsk - seemed to work ok.

After that this problem keeps occurring. One day I noticed that the files -
not any directories just files - in the c:\winnt directory were gone except
for two of them. I copied the files from another identical NT box in to this
server's winnt directory. A day or so later they were gone again. I copied
them into the dir again, a day later they are gone. I KNOW that the server
does not have any viruses. I can only figure that the server may have a
corrupt file system and needs to be cleaned once more.

Any suggestions?

I have to ask too: When you say the files

can't see them in Explorer or can't you see them from cmd prompt. Or -
even better - if you boot from floppy to cmd prompt are they there

We have 800 remote machines in a workgroup (not my design).

admin is a pain, you have to use 3rd party tools to manage (We're using SQL
anywhere, remoteware, and scripts), monitoring and helpdesk is a pain. You
can't do domain profiles, users, domain anything. pushing service packs is
a pain. logging into someone elses machine is a pain, changing passwords is
a pain, setting up security policys is difficult. if you go with a
workgroup solution, the choice is no security, or job security for the admin
IMO.

every admin task is local to every machine.

<>

The key is "their own" not shared with anyone on your net.

<>

yes, if you put every user login account on every machine, or enable guest
(no security). Workgroup computing might be do-able for 10 machines or so (
a workgroup), but any more, and it's a challenge.

Subject: W2K pro in a work group

Hi folks,
Excuse my ignorance, and unfortunately I can't test this.
How does W2K work in a workgroup.
For example.
In Windows 98 once the workgroup is configured on a computer, anyone who
logs on to the workgroup using that computer is able to access the
resources.
Is this true for W2K pro.
The scenario I am envisaging is this.
I join a computer to a workgroup using the Administrator account.
Now W2K pro has far better security and each user has or can have their own
profiles, permissions etc.
If, having been added to a workgroup using the Administrator account, I log
on as a user, provided the folders on a remote computer, also part of the
same workgroup, are share to the Everyone group, would this new user be able
to access those resources without any further administration?
Or would I have to add the computer to the work group for each user that
logged on to the computer?
Thanks
mark

Thanks,
But let me get this right.
Scenario:
two computers in a workgroup, created by Administrator.
Share a folder on computer 2, giving "Everyone" group full control.
Create an account on computer 1 for user 1
User 1 logs on to computer 1.
Can he see shared folder on computer 2?
If not, why not?
Is the solution:
Create user 1 account on each computer in workgroup?

We have a workgroup environment for one of our remote offices. You actually
figured out what you'll do. Create a user (or use the administrator account)
and let everybody logon with this username and password (same password). No
more problems.

As you know, if you have a workgroup, them the SAM database is local! That
means each W2K computer will have its own SAM and it will let access to its
resources only if the user, who is trying to acess, is defined in its own
SAM database. That's why the above solution will work properly :)

It all depends on what you're trying to do with a script. A master script
for a large corporation that will map drives based on the location with many
calls for group membership and subnet (which may vary if the person travels)
can get very long. It's not like a stationary office with 50 users and one
node.

What does your script actually do that standard services cannot offer?

How are the shares set up?  Do you have them
set up with password access, or do you have a domain that it gets the
  user list from?

Hi,I have set up VPN on Small Business
Server.The LAN consists of 4 Windows 98 SE 2 computers.I
dial in and am authenticated on the server. I can see all the shares
onthe other Windows 98 computers. If I try and access any
share on any other computer I get the access deniedmessage.I
can access shares on the server however.I bring the same
computer into the office and plug it directly into the LAN,and I
can access the very same shares that I was denied access via
VPN.Any ideas?Markhttp://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htmhttp://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htmhttp://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htmhttp://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htmhttp://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htmhttp://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htm

I must
be.
I am able to
access shares on the Small Business Server,.
I am not able to
access shares on the Windows 98 computers.
I must be
authenticated if I can access shares on the SBS,

RE: nt40 desktop not appearing

Had this once.
Turned out to be a corrupt wins database.
Deleted the database and re-booted.
Worked after that.

After I rebooted my NT4.0 SP4 development server today it returned only the
the CTRl-ALT-DEL dialog box. The NT splash banner was not in the background.
I logged in but only received a blank blue screen, no icons or desktop. No
task bar etc.

I can even hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and get the task manager dialog and that all
works, but I cannot get access to the desktop.

Anyone have any idea what the heck is going on? There is no virus, not
connected to Internet or no programs have been installed.

Thanks,

Subject: 98 Workstation can't see server/Net

Here's one I just don't get...

I have a client (An elementary school) with an NT server and 30 nodes
running Win 98. They just got DSL installed so that all machines can access
the Internet.

The way the Ameritech guy set them up, all computers(including the server)
are getting IP addresses from an upstream DHCP somewhere in Ameritech. (I
know, it's not at all secure. I'll address that with the client later.)

Most of the machines work ok with this and can see the lan and the local
server and the Internet. About 6 of them can't get out to the internet, but
can access the server...their network configurations are identical.

On one machine I removed and reinstalled tcp/ip protocol and now that
machine can't even see the server. I get the "No Domain Server was
available.." message.

Any suggestions on where to look, what to look for?

At some time in the future I plan on advising them to go with private IP
(192.168.x.x) for the internal network, and a firewall device like the
Linksys or something that does aliasing.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance!
Scott

What is the

  I
dunno. I didn't waste too much time on it at the time. I used the Con2prt
utility, put it in a batch file and put it if I remember correctly in the
startup folder on the several pc's in question.

I
am also having this issue with mandatory profiles. When I log in with an
mandatory account to a machine ( which has two three lexmark tcp/ip printers
installed on it ) how does it determine which printer is the one going to be
set as the default.

I
think the list of printers installed on an NT machine is stored in
:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers and the user
setting is stored in :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Windows\Device  ( another
list of printer stored in HKCU\Sw\MS\WinNT\PrinterPorts

How does the machine emunerate HKLM and decide which one is set as
default? Can we apply a weighting somehow to force it??

  Hello,

i was wondering if anyone knows a way to have
machines print to a specific printer no matter who logs on.  for
example we have a computer lab and each student has their own
account.  they have a roaming profile so they can log into any
comuter in the school and retain settings etc.  server is w2k sp2 and
workstations are w2k pro and nt 4.0.  is there a way so when they log
into one of the lab computers it only captures the printers in the lab,
when they go to the library they only capture the library printers,
etc?  could it possibly be in group policy for machines?  any
  help is greatly appreciated..
