OT - Triple Monitor Setup

2011-08-31 Thread Mark Smith
Hello Everyone,

I'm looking into building a new PC for my home office and
I'm contemplating a triple monitor setup.
I would like to have a single desktop across 3 monitors (probably 24"). That
way I could have an RDP session to my lab on 1, create/edit docs on the 2nd
and surf/email/media on the 3rd. May also be used for some gaming by my son.
looking for advice, recommendations, etc. on the video card/ monitors setup
more so than the rest of the PC.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: W2K8 R2 failing to backup to external USB HD

2011-06-20 Thread Mark Smith
I have tried the root and have tried a folder and have tried creating a
share and backing up to it from the other server over the network. Same
error everytime. I have run the "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo :"
command and have verified that both 3TB drives are 4k sector instead of the
standard 512 bytes. 4k drives are supported by windows backup so I believe
my only recourse is to find backup software that is 4k sector aware.

Thanks,
Mark

W2K8 R2 failing to backup to external USB HD

2011-06-20 Thread Mark Smith
I have 2 servers at home running W2K8 R2. 1 has a 3TB Buffalo Ext USB
connected to it and the other has 3TB WD My Book Ext USB connected. I try
having the built-in Windows Backup software backup each server to it's
connected USB drive. Both servers fail with the error:
The backup operation that started at '‎2011‎-‎06‎-‎20T14:29:53.105029300Z'
has failed with following error code '2155348010' (One of the backup files
could not be created.). Please review the event details for a solution, and
then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

>From the little amount of research I've done, Windows Backup seems to have
an issue with 4k sector drives. I haven't been able to verify yet if my 2
USB drives have 4k sectors.
I'm just wondering if anyone has run into this issue and have any solutions.
Maybe a HD utility or free/cheap backup software to use in place of the
built-in?

Thanks,
Mark

Virtual Routing and Hyper-V

2011-06-14 Thread Mark Smith
Hi All,

I have a small server running Server 2008 R2 with the Hyper-V and RRAS (NAT
& Routing options) roles installed.
My server has 2 physical NICS.
I'm trying to create multiple subnets and have the VM's on all the
subnets communicate.
So I've created 5 virtual networks (subnets) within Hyper-V. I have been
able to add 2 of the virtual networks to the Routing config in RRAS, but
when I try to add a 3rd it's not listed. When I right click 'Network
Interfaces' under RRAS in Server Manager and select 'New Interface' I
receive an error that there are no new network interfaces available.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

Recommendations - Laptop for Virtualization

2011-05-16 Thread Mark Smith
Hi All,

I need to purchase a laptop to run a virtualized test environment on.
So it will need a CPU that supports VT of course. I'm thinking quad core
would be best to handle the VM load.
I'd like to have the option of running an SSD for the primary drive and a
large SATA drive for storage.
I'm having a hard time finding which laptops support 2 hard drives.
It would be nice if it had mobile broadband (WWAN) support, so I could just
pop a SIM card in it - I keep breaking my dongle ;) but I doubt I'll find a
high powered laptop with that option.
Any recommendations, opinions would be great.

Thanks,

Why not attach the USB drive directly to the PC your imaging? Would be
simpler and eliminate the network as a potential bottleneck IMHO. Also, I've

24 port SAS RAID 6 Card?

2011-04-12 Thread Mark Smith
Hello Everyone,

I'm thinking of building a storage server for a test environment.
So performance and availability don't have to be the best.
I'm considering this case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219038&cm_re=24_bay_case-_-11-219-038-_-Product
Trying to keep the costs down and looking for your recommendations on
a storage controller.
Looks like I need a 24 port SAS controller for this case.
I want RAID 6 and 6 Gb/s would be nice.
I'm assuming a RAID card with an additional expansion card would be the best
value?

Thanks in advance,
Mark

E: is the boot drive and so I am unable to change the drive letter in Disk

Folder transfer over WAN via BITS???

2011-02-04 Thread Mark Smith
Happy Friday Everyone,

I have been asked to transfer a folder from 1 Windows 2003 server to another
Windows 2003 server over a WAN link. This will be done weekly. The client
would like to use BITS and have the copy 'trickle' over a long period of
time so as not to saturate the WAN link. The only Microsoft util I have
found is BitsAdmin. It seems that you have to explicitly name each file you
want copied. I need something that can do an entire folder.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

I would like to create bootable media (probably external USB drive) that

which applications to install, such as MS Office, AntiVirus, etc. Then once
selected, would perform an unattended install.
Looking for ideas on the easiest way to accomplish this.

iSCSI and shared volumes

2010-07-20 Thread Mark Smith
I have a few 2008 R2 servers that are stand alone (not clustered) Hyper-V
hosts.
They are connected via iSCSI to a single 5TB volume on a DELL/Equallogic
PE6000 iSCSI target.
The idea is to have the VM's for all the Hyper-V hosts in one volume on the
PE6000 and have all the hosts access that same volume simultaneously.
I am having a problem in that when one host writes to the volume the other
hosts don't see the changes.
Should this configuration work as I'm intending or do I need to go with
clustering in R2 and use CSV (Cluster Shared Volume) ?

SQL 2005&2008 32&64bit on same cluster?

2010-03-05 Thread Mark Smith
We have a 2003 server 2 node cluster running SQL 2005 32&64bit & SQL 2008
32&64bit.
Anyone else doing this?
Does anyone know if this configuration is supported by Microsoft?
I can't seem to find anything official on the web...

Yeah, it is a very useful CD.
I use number 2 in the list of choices under Partition Tools, 'Acronis'

IMO, cheapest, easiest would be to use a disk partitioning util to increase
the size of your C drive by taking some of the free space from E drive. I
like Acronis Disk Director, but there are many to choose from. Back up your
C drive first, just to be safe.

Thanks for the suggestion.
I ended up being able to delete the 'bad' record using the DNSCMD /RECORDDEL

How to locate/delete DNS A record???

2010-02-17 Thread Mark Smith
Hello Everyone.
I have a W2K3 Domain in my test environment.
I have a member server that I joined to the domain with the wrong IP
address.
Now pinging the server or running NSLOOKUP replies with the wrong IP.
I changed the IP on the server and tried IPCONFIG /REGISTERDNS but I receive
an error in the eventlog.
How can I locate/delete the A record? I tried manually looking for it in the
DNS MMC, but no joy.

thanks!

Hi,

I'm looking for a backup solution for a new customer. We normally use
unenhanced versions of Backup Exec or Arcserve, & back the system up out of
hours. Unfortunately this customer needs to work 24/7.

The software my company produces uses a well-known accounting package at its

core, which stores its data in a very large number of files which are
related to each other. It isn't possible to use a normal 'backup open
files' approach since if two related files are backed up - but new data has
been added in-between - restoring them will leave the system in an
inconsistent state.

So, I think what's needed (if such a thing exists) is a product that will
take a snapshot of an entire directory (inc. subdirs) and back that up -
while leaving the system usable (a moderate slowdown is acceptable). Does
anyone know if there's an add-on for our normal backup tools (or even a
completely different product) that can do what I'm asking? If so, what's
your experience of it?

Thanks,

Mark

RE: [LIST ADMIN MESSAGE] NY ATTACK

2001-09-13 Thread mark . smith

Don, I certainly hope you are not suggesting that all Canadians are
ignorant. I am Canadian and take offence to you stereotyping a complete
country. As for the events that have taken place in the U.S., I have been
watching in shock and horror. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who
has been touched by this. I came across the following news item and hope it
is appropriate to share here as it echoes my feelings and I'm sure those of
many , many others. This, from a Canadian newspaper,

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a
remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a
Canadian
television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant
remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the
most generous and
possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan
and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris
of
war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other
billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the
interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in
danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up,
and
their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I
was
there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that
hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened
by
tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into
discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing
about
the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the
erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any
other
country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the
Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them?
Why
do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on
the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You
talk
about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about
American
technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times
-
and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store
window for everybody to look at . Even their draft-dodgers are not
pursued
and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they
are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa
at
home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down
through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the
Pennsylvania
Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old
caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other
people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced
to
the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even
during
the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned
tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this
thing
with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their
nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope
Canada is not one of those.

Stand proud, America!
