I also tried it in Opera and it wouldn't even let me log into the DRAC.
Weird. Sadly, IE7 still works fine.

$28 for electricity?! Where the heck do you live, and do you not use
your air conditioning, or watch t.v., or have a refrigerator? That is
seriously low, unless everything in your house is gas, and that bill is
high. I'm lucky when my electric bill is under $100...

Jacob, good info, but not always accurate. My sister sent me an
interesting article last month that said the average home computer used
around $50 a month in electricity when on 24X7. This article was
stating the same reasons about conserving power. I agree we should all
do our part, but I told her the article was wrong. And the reason I
knew was that I have one computer at home that is on 24X7 for remote
access when I am not there. I also have a second computer that is on
only part time, and is a backup to the first. My electric bill in march
was $26 and change and May's was $28 and change. That is the entire
electric bill for my apartment. So you can see how I dispute all the
findings. However I do have power conservation turned on both
computers. They do aggressively power down monitors and even hard
drives when not in use. The primary does not totally power down so I
can still have remote access, but the secondary one does.

Shutdown your workstation and turn off the surge protector at the end of
every day.

The issue of leaving a workstation on all the time because turning it on
and off on a daily basis does more harm is absurd. With some
workstations running with a 300w power supply, that is a waste of
electricity.

8760 (hours per year) - 2000 (hours at work) = 6760 (hours not at work
per year)

6760 * 300 watts = 2028000 watts (2028 KWh)

2028 * .12 KWh (give or take on the cost of the KWh) = $243.36 year

$243.36 * 40 workstations = $9700 a year in electricity for workstation
not being used.

How often do I replace a hard drive in a workstation, maybe 4 or 5 times
a year. Does not cost use more than $9700 a year to replace hard
drives.

RE: Cluster, virtual servers, or traditional?

2008-03-26 Thread Russ Clark
This is something we did last year and are still implementing. We ended
up getting an iSCSI SAN and I currently have a two node cluster that is
also hosting MS virtual servers with all the data sitting in the SAN.
This worked for us as we also needed to replace quite a bit of our
hardware and I was able to shut down quite a few older servers and move
them onto two new clustered servers.

Clustering is included with the Enterprise and above version of server
2003/2008, but you would need to purchase two server licenses.
Clustering requires some type of shared storage.

You might look at iSCSI or NAS solutions for storage if you do not need
the performance of a Fibre Channel SAN. There is a big cost saving and
in the right environment they work great. Virtualization such as VMware
will be of benefit if you want to consolidate servers. If you have a
bunch of servers that run at 10-15 % utilization then it makes sense to
virtualize them. Also easy to deploy new servers from templates which
saves lots of time. If you have small number of servers which have heavy
utilization then stick with traditional hardware.

Subject: Cluster, virtual servers, or traditional?

Hi Folks:

Over the next year I'll be replacing/moving around most of my servers
here at HQ. Currently I have traditional hardware servers. I'm
wondering at what point to I need to move, if at all, to
clustering/SAN/virtual servers. At my regional sites (all 50 staff or
less) the model will remain a traditional server hardware. However here
at HQ (6 buildings) I am not so sure. I have about 400 staff members
here using several servers for e-mail and file and print, as well as the
typical variety of utility, web, and so on servers. None of the servers
consume a huge amount of disk space for files or for e-mail (fairly
stringent disk space quotas for e-mail).

Suggestions? I'll be moving to Windows 2008, and I thought I read that
you can cluster 2 servers without additional licenses. I'm not sure
about SANs, since that my be overkill here, and I haven't done anything
with virtualization yet (other than desktop).

Reliability is important, but so is cost. Being a non-profit, I don't
have lots of funds for extra hardware unless I can justify it.

Comments and suggestions appreciated.

I belive you can achieve this with Symantec BESR (Backup Exec System
Recovery) 8. This is a stand-alone product that will let you
backup/clone to dissimilar hardware. You can also easily make them into
VM images. Since it's going from a desktop you could download the 60
day trial for the desktop version use the recovery CD on the server to
restore it. If it's doesn't do exactly what you need there's no loss.

RE: GibbsBlog: Death by Old PSUs

2008-01-26 Thread Russ Clark
I can say that I have not seen this and I have decommissioned a few
servers in the last 12 months, some of which are over 7 years old in
which I had to bring back online for various reasons, but none of them
had any problems. I have been more concerned with the disk seizing, but
fortunately I have not experienced that either.

Has anyone here undergone something like this?

Death by Old PSUs
Submitted by Mark Gibbs on Fri, 01/25/2008 - 3:01pm.

I just read a mail list posting in which a friend explained how he
had to
shut down and number of servers in a data center for facilities
maintenance for the first time in six years -- the machines had all
been
running non-stop for the whole time. On restart a significant number

failed because -- it is suspected -- the power supplies which could
supply
power for normal operation could no longer handle startup
conditions! The
suspicion is that electrolyte evaporation in the PSU capacitors is
the
most likely cause!

Wow. Is there a disaster waiting to happen in your data center? I
did a
quick search on this topic but not being an electrical engineer I
may not
have been using the right search terms. Anyone know anything about
this
problem?

Oh, and Happy Friday! May all your servers stay up all weekend ...
