OK.

PC and small receipt printer is on site and over night the building
loses one of its legs in its 3 phase connection to Duke Power, PC and
printer were powered off over night. Fast forward to this morning...PC
comes up w/o issue but printer does not. Confirm all connections, try
different plug on surge protector, new surge protector, direct into
several wall outlets. Duke Power comes out and fixes
connection...printer comes up. What gives? Need I say again, every
freakin' component in the building is working w/o a problem during the
loss of one of the phases. I think the printer is from the debil...

broke everything our company used... I had to disable it. The Scan
Network Drives also had to be disabled, silly concept anyway. I also
disabled the mail/spam scanning as its done on the exchange box.

Phil,

You need to (and have to) take I&C first. DSA is considered a upper
level course, which you have to pass an "pre-class exam" in order to sit
the class. I took the I&C class and it rocks; more than enough info to
get you farted. FWIW, I was in the same boat as you 6 months ago and
the I&C class cleared a lot of things up for me before I started
deployment. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me

I have a Windows 2003 SP2 32-bit domain controller that wont
boot. It stops at acpitabl.dat when you when you choose to boot from
safe mode - any option. . If you choose the normal boot process, it
shows the boot screen for forever and never gets to the login screen.
The server is an HP Proliant ML350 G5.

I have updated the storage array and bios drivers to the latest

Any ideas out there?
My last option is to perform an in-place upgrade. How will this

Maybe I got the context of your silly comment mixed up. My
apologizes. I certainly don't want to put anything in your mouth.

I said *IE7* sucks. I have enjoyed previous versions of IE.

It has become increasingly apparent that many people aren't aware of
the memory issues and resulting oddities of IE7. I thought as admins
we strive for up-time and deferral of data/work loss. Just because
you haven't encountered an issue, doesn't mean that you wont, or that
your users don't. Information is good, right?

I'm offering my personal experiences with a product that I have
performed tests with. I don't understand why people like you take it
personally like I'm trying to tell you what to do. I'm not.

I never said it sucks for you or anyone else. But ultimately, as
product robustness goes, IE7 sucks - comparatively speaking (is that
better for you?)

But the fact is that you are an exception, not the rule. Very few people
will ever have a legitimate need to have 50-100 tabs open at one time. I
do a lot of online research also, but I rarely have a need to go about
10 tabs. It happens but not often. I go to all types of sites and have

Subject: Re: Firefox 3.0 Download Day - TMP plugin?

I'll give you that - to a point. But even FF2 was better than IE7. I
am a hardcore browser user, and through the course of researching a
project, I beat my tabs like they owe me money - opening 50-100
simultaneously through the course of a day.

Even with 3gb+ of RAM, this will crash IE7. That much RAM doesn't
matter really, because IE7 doesn't seem to operate well as it passes
500mb+ of RAM. And what happens when IE7 crashes? Bye-bye tabs and
all your work! *poof!*

What happens when FF2/3 crashes (with TMP's session options)? Gasp!
Everything is restored right where you left off - session data and
all! That's if FF2/3 would even crash, which in comparison to IE7 is
way less often.

I don't just arbitrarily make a statement like that. I've run these
two side by side for months, banging away at them with legitimate
normal use as well as research into black sites. IE7 sucks
comparatively speaking.

IE7 as a single-window/single-tab browser is fine, as long as you
don't get exploited at a naughty site. So, you've trapped yourself
to only visiting well-known sites and not using any pre-supplied URLs
that might have exploits embedded.

FF2/3 on the other hand simply out-performs, and out-survives IE7 for
real web use and abuse. In terms of naughty-site protection, its way
ahead of the curve in terms of built-in functionality and what can
easily be added via extensible add-ons.

If you consider how many companies in the past screwed themselves by
being locked into the Lotus Notes framework, you would be wise to make
such considerations about other limited-compatibility products as
well.

Even if Lotus Notes worked for you, there was a continuous financial
investment that likely could have been better invested elsewhere at a
certain point.

I'm not nay-saying the value of Sharepoint, but Kurt makes a point
that you should consider. Microsoft's continued stance in not
supporting browser compatibility is quite shortsighted.

I know from security testing that I would definitely prefer my users
to use Firefox. I wish I could be complacent in the use of IE, but its
just not practical in my organization where I have to allow my users
to investigate information online.

Yup, I'm doing a happy dance right now!!

If you consider how many companies in the past screwed
themselves by
being locked into the Lotus Notes framework, you would be wise
to make
such considerations about other limited-compatibility products
as
well.

Even if Lotus Notes worked for you, there was a continuous
financial
investment that likely could have been better invested elsewhere
at a
certain point.

I'm not nay-saying the value of Sharepoint, but Kurt makes a
point
that you should consider. Microsoft's continued stance in not
supporting browser compatibility is quite shortsighted.

I know from security testing that I would definitely prefer my
users
to use Firefox. I wish I could be complacent in the use of IE,
but its
just not practical in my organization where I have to allow my
users
to investigate information online.

This directly translates to home use - which is where the
majority of
the worlds phishing/trojan/zombie issues now lay.

Kurt,

I can't speak for those specific models; we use the Pro 4060 here. I
have no complaints against the device and support, even from India, is
responsive; the first level techs are for the most part very
knowledgeable however when this appliance gets older we are going to
replace it with Cisco's ASA device or its current equivalent.

Can you speak specifically to the differences between the 200 and the

I'm looking at the comparison chart, and the 200 doesn't seem to
support AD integration, which might be OK, but I'm really looking for
quality of experience. Does the 200 really support 50 users well, or
if I have that many should I move to the 2000?

Kurt

PS - I'm abandoning SSLExplorer - the publisher took the latest rev
private - it's no longer GPL'ed, and although I could stay at the last
GPL rev, nobody's yet taken up maintenance of that, nor forked it. I
was on top of paying for help, but when a publisher revokes the GPL,
they're not playing the game any more, and I'll drop the product as
soon as I can.

Well sure... but why would you? This just doesn't make any sense to
me. And I'm not trying to be a pita here - I just seriously cannot
make sense out of:

1. Why if you are a disassociated admin, would you test beta AV
software. I'm sketchy about beta software in general - but beta AV
software?

Are you a virus-security professional? Do you really have what it
takes to put AV software through its paces? A beta-test request like
this is much better suited for the security professionals on the
Full-Disclosure list, etc.

2. Devote any time/resources to testing beta anything that was not
mission0critical to your organization.

Mabe Im getting old, and am thinking with too much of an old-school a
mentality. But I cant imagine having any justification for beta
testing AV software. Let alone my organization approving that
justification.

I wonder if there is something going on that I am sorely missing out on.

People or so gung-ho to test any kinda of beta software these days
regardless of professional expertise - it just boggles my mind.

*shrug*

Subject: RE: I've *GOT* to share!!

This reminds me of a situation about 30 years ago when I was in business
selling data terminal equipment. My business was in Chicago, and I had a
customer about 2 hours ride from Omaha. The customer had a lot of
electrical issues, and one enterprising lady used to unplug her terminal
on weekends to protect it from surges. She went on vacation and forgot
to tell someone that she unplugged the terminal. Come Monday, and I get
a call from the customer that their terminal is "dead". I didn't have a
technician anywhere near them, so it was agreed we'd "debug" over the
phone with their help. First we told them to check the fuse, and it was
OK. Then we asked if the terminal was plugged into the wall socket, and
it was. We were all at a loss, so they asked if I'd send a tech to fix
the terminal. I told them I'd have to fly a tech in from Chicago, and
they agreed to pay the airfare along with the rental car expense and our
service fee of $95. We sent the tech, and after he got there late in the
afternoon, he called to tell us that the electric cable was disconnected
at the terminal, but it was plugged into the wall. This was a terminal
with it's own built-in stand, and the electric cable was not hard wired,
but quick disconnect and connected UNDER the stand. The woman always
disconnected it at the terminal because it was too much trouble to
disconnect at the wall. The customer thanked us and paid the $800 plus
bill that we sent, with no questions asked. I hadn't thought about that
for about 30 years.

Thanks for the memories

Murray

Shutdown your workstation and turn off the surge protector at the end of
every day.

The issue of leaving a workstation on all the time because turning it on
and off on a daily basis does more harm is absurd. With some
workstations running with a 300w power supply, that is a waste of
electricity.

8760 (hours per year) - 2000 (hours at work) = 6760 (hours not at work
per year)

6760 * 300 watts = 2028000 watts (2028 KWh)

2028 * .12 KWh (give or take on the cost of the KWh) = $243.36 year

$243.36 * 40 workstations = $9700 a year in electricity for workstation
not being used.

How often do I replace a hard drive in a workstation, maybe 4 or 5 times
a year. Does not cost use more than $9700 a year to replace hard
drives.

some great test ideas. They can be found at the link below.
http://forums.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver.
Below is a set of instructions to prepare a home server for testing the
beta of Power Pack 1:

Ensure you have a complete backup of all of your files. While internal
testing so far indicates that we have fixed the data corruption bug in
the beta release, the whole point of a beta test is to validate internal
testing. This means there is a risk that our internal tests have not
detected all issues. As a beta tester it is your responsibility to
ensure that your data is backed up and protected before you install the
beta.
If you are setting up a new home server to run the beta, download and
install the "Windows Home Server RTM Evaluation Edition" from Microsoft
Connect.
Ensure that Windows Updates are enabled for your home server. Your home
server must have all the latest updates from Windows Update installed
before you install the beta Power Pack 1 update package.
* To turn on automatic updates:
* Go to the Windows Home Server Console > Settings > General
page.
* Click On (recommended) in the Windows Update section.
* Click Update Now to get the latest updates immediately
Please turn on the Customer Experience Improvement for your home server.
The information provided to the team through this program is invaluable
in helping us understand how we are doing against our testing goals.
* To turn on Customer Experience Improvement:
* Go to the Windows Home Server Console > Settings > General
page.
* If you agree to opt-in to this program, ensure the Help make
Windows Home Server better in the Customer Experience Improvement
section is enabled.
Please ensure that you have a backup of all of your files and data. If
your data set is large (the larger the better for testing purposes) this
will take a while, so you might want to get started now!

RE: General question - Logging onto a user's computer

2008-06-05 Thread Tom Strader - NCBPAC Systems Administrator
A good name is better than great riches.

Administrators should manage their systems with complete integrity,
respecting the privacy and confidentiality of each user and the network
they have been given charge over.

Unless instructed by upper management to do so for reasons of
information gathering or for legal reasons, you should never monitor a
user's activity without their knowledge. Notice I did NOT say permission
or consent. Since the equipment belongs to the company and not the
individual user, their activities can be monitored with permission from
the appropriate management.

I always call my users before connecting to their workstations. It just
a matter of respect and credibility.

My 2 cents,

Tom

I just got reamed for preventing a crash. It irked me, so let me know
what you think, or what your policy is.

Management simply said "It is not acceptable to log into someone else's
computer without their consent." Period.

If you see a situation where a crash is about to occur, do you just
watch because you are trying to identify who is actually using that
workstation at that moment and try to contact them, or do you remote in,
displaying a "Netmgr x has remotely connected to your pc" alert box, and
resolve the issue before they crash and lose a day's work?

Those things would take longer to be scanned by whatever software you

RE: TechEd meet up possibility on the 11th.

2008-06-04 Thread Tom Strader - NCBPAC Systems Administrator
Even though I have been in the IT field for over 20 years, I am more or
less a newbie to this list.

I have found it to be both VERY helpful and fun to participate in,
however, I agree that using this list to bring attention to one group of
people, cultures, life-styles or religion for humor's sake should be at
a minimum and posted in another forum specifically created for such
content.

I am sure I have offended a couple of people here which I regret has
happened but I have tried to apologize to said persons with no response
of any possible reprieve or forgiveness. SAD because I really need that
person's participation when I have a question or problem.

There is a wealth of knowledge here.
Light joking while on-topic is good for keeping boredom at bay but it
may be best to stick to the topic, for the most part, when posting.

I am sure STU would appreciate that since this list is sponsored and
supported by those wonderful people at Sunbelt-Software.

My two cents, which ain't worth a penny now a days,
Tom

If you want to use this list as some personal joke/banter forum, the
please have the courtesy to mark your posts as OT (or Off Topic) so the
rest of us can create rules that put this stuff into the bin.

People who actually contribute answers (rather than drivel) have better
things to do that monitor this list for things they can answer. I
personally find it irritating to open Outlook in the morning and find
200 unread messages from this list, of which 20 are actually useful, and
the other 180 are from you and your friends (or others) engaging in
pointless conversation.

There is this option to "little-r" and just reply to those who want to
spend their time joking with you. The rest of us either (a) don't care
or (b) don't want to see it.

What is wrong with Frontpage? Hah kidding again...

It is a good security measure to take to use only what you need
to so as
not
to increase your organizations attack surface and therefore
potential to
be
compromised.

Take myITforum.com for example... it is very pretty, in a bits
tossed
all
over the webpage kind of way, but it also has a potential
security flaw
which can be found in about 20 seconds of visiting the website.

The majority of companies on NTSYSADMIN can probably be
compromised
because
of the overt overuse of "cool web" functionality that adds no
user
experience except for glitz.

In light of some of the recent hardware-related oddities posted here,
I thought I'd share two of my own more annoying recent discoveries in
the past 6 months:

1. Dell Optiplex GX520's have a motherboard problem. The system will
shut itself off, leaving the user only with an amber flashing power
button light. The motherboard needs to be replaced to correct this
issue. My show has many of these PC's, and it has happened to 4 so
far. This starts are a very infrequent annoyance that becomes more
frequent over time - resulting in not being able to keep the system on
for more than 60 seconds between occurrences. It appears to me to be
a heat sensor problem, but I don't have confirmation on that.

2. I don't have a manufacturer commonality for this one, but it
appears to be specific to Serial-ATA. The problem/cause is still
unknown to me, but the result is partition corruption that makes the
drive unreadable without special utilities that can read raw data.
Twice this happened to the same HDD. The other other two instances
were different HDD's from different computers. In each case the
partition info could be reconstructed. It has happened to my own
system at home as well as user systems at work. The only commonality
was that there were all Windows XP systems.

These are just some things to have recall for if you run into similar
oddities. That is all.

Me too, except that the day-to-day accounts me and my IT cow-orkers
do not have any special privileges to the machine at all. A "Power
User" account is basically the same as an Administrator account, so
that doesn't afford much protection or practical difference. By
running as unprivileged users, OTOH, we're still protected against
system compromise due to malware, and we're also used to doing things
the same was as all the "regular users". I try to eat my own dog
food.

We've got a PCADMIN account that has admin privileges to
workstations. But as far as the servers are concerned, it's just a
regular user account. Then there's the domain admin account, which
has phenomenal cosmic powers, but only gets used for servers and other
domain-wide stuff.

There's only two of us in IT here, and we work side-by-side a lot,
so I haven't bothered setting up different admin accounts for each of
us. For larger organizations, or systems with particular security
requirements (auditing who did what), that's a good idea, too.

Me too (I'm starting to feel like an AOL user).

I've actually got a batch file, with a Start Menu shortcut LNK, with
a shortcut hotkey, so all I have to do is hit
[CTRL]+[ALT]+[SHIFT]+[.], enter the password when prompted, and I get
a new elevated CMD prompt window. (Without [SHIFT], I've got a
different shortcut that just gives me a command prompt for my
account.)
