Re: [ARRGHHHH] Macs and VPNs on 2003

2008-02-20 Thread Gavin Wilby
Its not like I *need* a windows box to do my job - RDP works fine in a Mac
so I can remote all the sites I look after from home. And if I was to get
seriously stuck there is always Fusion or Bootcamp.
I love the way the Mac is put together and once you get out of the Windows
mindset, youll find they can actually work smarter - Spotlight for instance
knocks Vista/ Google/ desktop search into a cocked hat.

Mind you - Office on it sucks :)

That would really impress me regarding Macs...if I couldn't say the

The reliability, stability and security of any given system has much
more to do with the system's user than it does the system's OS.

My first experience with NetWare was 2.x, oh the joys of building a networking
floppy that differed from computer to computer depending on what NIC the
machine had.

My first home network was LANtastic on DOS. Coax thin ethernet, never had to
deal with Thick Ethernet. I remember when Windows for Workgroups 3.11 was
released with the express purpose of breaking LANtastic; that started my
lifelong "love" for all things Microsoft.

I got my first computer log-in in the fall of 1970, but I remember my dad
having a 110-baud modem in the family room earlier than that ...

Yeah, and we carved our own ICs out of wood. Using obsidian knives.

With a virulence approaching hate, yes (Windows 9x and NT machines networked
via Chameleon-NFS were my intro to Windows networking).
Want to watch Explorer go BOOM on opening a folder? Play with permissions on
the Unix NFS host for a folder, then connect to it over Chameleon NFS. If the
permissions aren't exactly write, Explorer crashes on loading the folder.

1) That was a different version of the Mac OS then the OS X
2) PC's still had more viri
3) A free little program by the name of Disinfectant pretty much put a
stop to new viruses on the Mac in the mid 90's. Sure there were still new
ones, but nothing like the late 80's/early 90's

You tended to see more widespread virus issues with Mac's since with
AppleTalk built in, Mac's tended to be networked far earlier then their PC
brethren (remember LANtastic or Windows for Warehouses, ARCnet, and paying for
TCP/IP on PC's?!?)

Should be some kind of log file on either your VPN side, or on the MAC's.

We use Nortel Contivity for our VPN solution and it requires a special
client specifically for the MAC's or any *nix flavor, that must be purchased
separately. Their Windows client comes with it.

they couldn't get a virus in a Word document. A few days later, the
first MS Word macro virus was found. I thought it was rather humorous.

Re: [ARRGHHHH] Macs and VPNs on 2003

2008-02-18 Thread Sherry Abercrombie
Never say never when it comes to viruses.

A number of years ago, I was taking a class at the local community college
online. At the intro meeting one of the students asked about getting a
virus or something like that, and the instructor stated that we would be
uploading our documents as Microsoft Word documents and that they couldn't
get a virus in a Word document. A few days later, the first MS Word macro
virus was found. I thought it was rather humorous.

I only have 2 years for retirement. I am suggesting they outsource my
position. I woud pity anyone taking it way too much politics and way too
little pay.

Our CEO was talking about getting a Mac and all I had to ask was how much were
we going to pay the new position.
