I have about 8 of them virtualized. Did the same, free converter to a VMWARE

have 2 in ESX same process, no issues

So, speaking of VMing your BES, who has Virtualizeded their physical BES? One
of our clients has their BES running on an ancient 2000 server with over 100
devices. I was thinking that instead of doing a knife edge cutover, I could
just virtualize the server. None of our clients currently run any corp network
stuff in VM, so this would be new. Easier than knife edge cutover? Is the
downtime minimal? Setup easy?

RE: Blackberry Bold Administration

2008-10-23 Thread Jim Majorowicz
You get the first CAL free with the purchase of any Blackberry. There are
other restrictions. It's great if you know you're never going to support
more than 30 phones or need the attachment/application service. Otherwise
go with BES. Converting to BES from Pro is a pain.

Also, although it says you can install on SBS, avoid if possible if you have
one. That's another pain.

You can probably get away with Blackberry Professional instead of BES. I
think it is free when you purchase one CAL from BB. It is fairly new.

No. I ran BES on a 4 year old PC for a while for 30 users. No problems. I
think it had 512mb and a 30GB drive and maybe 1ghz?

I now have about 100 users on BES in a VM. The VM server has 8 other VMs on
it. I have it configured with 2GB RAM and a 100GB volume.

I'm running mine on a P4 4Ghz, with 2Gb of Ram, I'm at 32 users, I'm
also running Microsoft WSUS and Webtrends on the same server, the
biggest problem I have right now is drive space, WSUS takes a lot of
Disk space and the BES server logs all kinds of useful / useless
information and can add up if you don't monitor disk space.

You can probably get away with Blackberry Professional instead of BES.
I think it is free when you purchase one CAL from BB. It is fairly new.

Subject: Blackberry Bold Administration

Okay, so with the Blackberry Bold being released November 4th, and about
3 people want to pick them up here, what do I, as the person who never,
ever, EVER, had to administer anything having to even remotely do with a
blackberry need to do to prepare?

Thanks in advance.

The server (VM or not, mine was an old Optiplex workstation before I P2Vd it)
doesn't need to have a lot of horsepower it just needs 1-2 Gig memory if you
run the attachment service (I have 30 users on mine) HTH

Get Blackberry Enterprise Server.

Seriously. Do it now or do it later, but you will eventually do it.

The other option which I don't care for, but have supported is BIS.
Blackberry Enterprise Service. That's managed by the carrier / user and they
point their account at your OWA address and pull the mail that way, but they
only get wireless email. No wireless calendar, contacts, tasks, etc. They
would need to cable up to their PC and use the Blackberry desktop app to do
it.
