DropBox does not require a client. The client is merely convenient. There's a web interface and you can provide them the link to a shared file for download. Just got an email blast. They've dropped the .net. They're now just Box. I'm not sure what the objection is to the client. Naked FTP is not secure, with or without passwords. sFTP with SSL or SSH and specific accounts, etc, will generally be deemed secure, but if you've ever managed a dynamic FTP/SSH config, with oft-changing non-technical partners, you'll agree that it's not going to fall anywhere near the ease of use category.
