Have you tried to unload the hive from the HKEY_CURRENT_USER portion of the
registry for that profile?

Anyone know of a way to unload or free a stuck mandatory profile other
than UPHClean? I have tried the latest and also the beta versions of this
tool and can't seem to free the profile. Handle.exe tells me that it is the
System process with this open so I guess forcing it closed will probably
blue-screen my Citrix server. Are there any other ways I can get around this
without a server restart? I am not hopeful.

I would try Mike's suggestion, as well as maybe restarting the UPHclean
service, as it might be what is stuck.

Given that a bash too, no luck. I'd love to know how it keeps getting
locked, although my boss's propensity for editing the default mandatory
profile during working hours may have something to do with it. Looks like a
server reboot is on the cards :-(

Process Explorer tells me it is the System process which has a handle to one
particular user's ntuser.man file still open. I just know if I use the
close handle function the server will die, so I was wondering if there was
any other way of freeing it up. Looks like I am stuck to a restart, but
thanks for the suggestions.does anyone know any ways of avoiding such
problems in future (besides telling people not to edit the default mandatory
profile on the fly)

If you think it's coming from a remote session and you have physical access
to the server, you could try stopping or restarting the server service. If
it still doesn't unlock, it's something local from the server.

Didn’t manage to get that far…hopefully it has been restarted by now. I
would like to try and find out why this is happening though. Someone
suggested to me the MS Office ctfmon.exe process might be to blame, but
seeing as though the file was opened by System, this seems unlikely to me.

System is the task that handles the registry, so if a user process
is holding the user's registry open, then System will show as having
the registry hive file open. If CTFMON.EXE is holding the registry
open, that would make sense. In my experience, CTFMON likes to cause
odd-ball problems, so that might not be that far fetched.

I should find out tomorrow then as I have gone through the (somewhat
laborious) task of disabling it for all users. Only problem is, if it isn't,
I'll need another restart before I can test something else for the root

Citrix also had a problem with Office applications not closing properly when
used as a published application. If you can find out which application is
not closing properly you can fix it with the following registry setting

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Citrix\wfshell\TWI

LogoffCheckSysModules = officeapp.exe (Name of your office application)
