Then look at Citrix Assess Essentials. That is kind of like their "SBS
2003" product. Easy to setup, uses wizards for everything and includes both
TS and Citrix licenses.

Apps are Office 2003, mainly Word and Excel.

Browser based app, that connects to a IIS server on the IOM.

A product called Laserfiche, that does document managment.

Thats it really.

I have a site in Ireland that have ti access 3 apps from a server on the
Isle of Man, they currently do this via a TS2003 server, but they get the
entire desktop to use - its confusing for them and irritating to support.

I want to simply deliver these 3 apps to the users desktop - what to use
2008 TS or Citrix?

I don't do or know pricing. Which would cost less: adding Citrix or
upgrading to 2008? How many users, how "big" are the apps? You could do
this with TS 2008 remote apps or via the Citrix Web Interface. The Citrix
ICA protocol is more efficient than RDP.

RE: First look at 2008

2008-05-08 Thread Michael B. Smith
OK, this is the deal. The document compares what capabilities are present in
the CORE T/S PRODUCT.

That is, it doesn't matter than you can do policies with GPO, that's not a
T/S feature (it's an A/D feature). It doesn't matter than you can do
alerting, and notifications, and take actions with OpsMgr, that's not a T/S
feature (it's an OpsMgr feature). Etc. etc. etc.

Citrix is sold as an integrated product with feature set "X". Microsoft
sells itself as a platform with applications that can provide feature set
"Y". "Y" has its benefits and the total feature set may, or may not, be
larger than "X". That's up to an individual client to determine their
specific needs.

As the PM said "This is a marketing document, and as such open to
interpretation."

So..Under protest, I'll give Web his point. Web-1, Michael-0.

J

I still don't believe that the document provides a true reflection of the
capabilities of each product line. But that's just me being pithy.

Want to understand the differences between Presentation Server 4.5 and
Terminal Services in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003? Take a
look at the new 14-page Citrix
<http://www.citrix.com/site/resources/dynamic/salesdocs/Citrix_PresentationS
erver45_TerminalServices2003_2008FeatureAnalysis.pdf> Presentation Server
on Windows Terminal Services: A Feature Analysis just completed by the
Citrix Technical Marketing Team. But this is not just the Citrix perspective
on what is different between the products. This document was co-developed
with a couple of members from the Microsoft Terminal Services team (blog

I'll be the first to admit that Citrix can do lots of things that T/S
cannot. And I respect your knowledge with their products.

But that document has problems. Some places are flat out not true, and it
even contradicts itself. And some places are truly marketing spin. From page
2:

One example, from page 2: Administrators can configure settings for user
sessions as policies that can be applied to sessions

based on username, group, server name, server management container, client
IP address or

subnet, zone, or client name (or partial name). Priorities can be applied to
these policies depending

on specific user session situations.

All of that, except for the very last sentence, applies to Windows Server
2003 and 2008. And since I'm not sure of EXACTLY what the last sentence is
talking about, even the last sentence may apply. If you can write a WMI
query for a situation, you can filter a policy on it.

Another one, also from page 2: Enables monitoring and evaluation of server
performance. Custom threshold-based alerts and

reports can be generated to enhance management and allow administrators to
optimize the

Terminal Services farm.

It's noted that this is only available in the Platinum/Enterprise editions
of Presentation Server. Well, this is perfectly doable in T/S too - with
OpsMgr or MOM thrown into the mix.

It goes on and on..I only read about half before I got disgusted and quit.

It's the same WinPE 2.0 under the covers. They both let you add mass storage
