Still, since VIPRE can be had for as little as $20 - it's a no-brainer
for me. Clients can get best of breed protection for less than
$2/month. If you can't afford that you probably shouldn't have a
computer.

Re: Home AV for user with XPx64

2011-05-31 Thread Matthew W. Ross
I just had to print that out... Awesome. As for free AV solutions, I have the
following suggestions:

MSE - Doesn't run on XP64? Bummer.

AVG - It has begun to suck in the past year or so.

Avast - I haven't used it in years. Might be a good choice.

ClamWin with Clam Sentinel - ClamAV is open source AV... used by millions of
users who are behind virus scanning firewalls (most of them use it because it's
free) and with the Sentinel program, it scans items as they are used (a feature
that ClamWin can't do on it's own yet.) I recommend this only for those who
wish to support the open source AV, as it's probably not as tested as other AVs
for desktop use.

Panda Cloud - This is my new current favorite. It's free and slightly different
style of AV, using the cloud to do much of it's heavy lifting. Does it work? It
has for me. It's also extremely lightweight, so it doesn't bog down any
older/slower systems as much. It should work on XP64.

And, last Vipre Rescue - Not a AV, but a cleaner... but need I say more?

I'll second that. Avast has been uperior to AVG for the last decade or so, so

the updates were getting cumbersome. I switched to Avast a few months ago and I
am very happy. You have register the free version with an email, but so far not
a single email or nag.

Re: Home AV for user with XPx64

2011-05-31 Thread RichardMcClary
+1

On the one hand, the personal firewall (and note - this is apparently for
XP and not Win7) is great and works for 64-bit systems.

On the other hand, this is not free. It's worth it (to me) anyway. Great
support. If you have multiple machines in the house, then they also have
a "home site license". Finally, sometimes if you agree to test the beta
of one of their up-coming versions (or new product), they'll give you a
free year extension on your license.

2011-05-31 Thread James Rankin
I've used Avast for years. When the license comes up for renewal (which
basically means you have to provide an email address, real or not), it pops
up a scary-looking (to the end-user) red warning which will probably get you
a phone call, but otherwise it's pretty unnoticeable.

Subject: Home AV for user with XPx64

Hey guys,
I got a home user I just redeployed a box for, anyone have a preference
for a nagless home AV?
I always use MSE, but there isn't an XP64 client, Avira has popup
adverts that I don't want to be bothered about, AVG Free looks like it
supports XPx64?
Since I don't use AVG, anyone know if it runs nagless?

Thanks!
jlc
