RE: Win2k8 - 64Bit on ESX
This is a hardware cpu/bios issue, as others have mentioned. I'm not familiar with HP's server line, but with Dell, their generation 8 servers (2800, 2850, etc) have the same issue. These are the first Intel processors that supported 64 bit, but they do not support 64-bit guest operating systems as they don't have the virtualization technology. To get that, you must have a generation 9 server (1950, 2950, etc) that has the option in the bios to support 64-bit guest systems. It has to do with the processors and what they can support. -Bonnie -Original Message- From: Juned Shaikh [mailto:jsha...@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, April 09, 2009 2:57 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: Win2k8 - 64Bit on ESX I looked everywhere in the BIOS settings and found no reference to enabling or disabling the 64Bit. RE: Win2k8 - 64Bit on ESX
Thanks, I think I got the correct answer. IT does need VT enabled processor apart from being simply 64Bit binary compatible for it to work with VMWare ESX and XenServer. Direct installation of Windows 2008 on this hardware with Intel Xeon 3.0Ghz processor does work. VMWare ESX is displaying Intel Xeon CPU 3.60 GHz ; Processor Speed 3.6 GHz and Hyperthreading enabled. So.. thanks everybody pointing me to the right direction. I can tell you from experience that this is because VT is NOT enabled in the BIOS. It would be in the server BIOS. RE: Win2k8 - 64Bit on ESX
Sounds like a no go for this server. I believe those particular netburst CPUs do not have the Intel VT feature. I believe you can run a 32bit guest OS under ESX3.x or ESXi3.x. Some quick googling; http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?admit=109447627+1239317150393+28353475threadId=1271328 http://communities.vmware.com/thread/73300;jsessionid=FBAA0BF9189332B7EC7024B7C5DBC4A9?tstart=0start=0 http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12028_div/12028_div.html specs for the server? My guess based on about 5 minutes of research is these are Irwindale or Nacoma xeon cpus. If you could locate the spec number, it would be easier to tell. Probably they are SL7ZF cpus, which appear to not support Intel VT, but do support Intel 64. Though, I could be wrong. Gene Giannamore Abide International Inc. RE: Win2k8 - 64Bit on ESX
Hi, Not only do you need a 64bit CPU, but you need Intel VT support enabled as well (or AMD-V). If your particular server's BIOS, or the CPU, doesn't support that, then I don't think you can run 64bit guests. What is the actual CPU you have in your machine?
