RE: satellite connection

2001-09-27 Thread Bob Prince

The biggest problem with Satellite IP
networks is rather high latency.

The last time I tried a test ping times
ran into the 1500+ msec range.

Thats 1.5 Seconds.

So that might work for background file
transfers, e-mail SMTP traffic, etc. but nothing
with human interaction.

Bandwidth can be large but because
of delays not suitable for some of todays
applications
such as Terminal Server, VPN or not.
The VPN probably has problems because of the latency. You would need to tune IP
for
this environment in most cases.

RE: satellite connection

2001-09-26 Thread Charlie Hicks

I have had Starband since January. Their service has stabilized some but
came through some rough times early on.

Their support is shaky at best. I had to have a satellite modem replaced
due to lightning and it took over a month to finally get one delivered. It
was very frustrating.

The download speeds vary from about 400K to 600K but the upload speed is
only in the 40K range. There is a 700-900ms latency per packet due to the
satellite uplink and downlink. For some applications like VPN, gaming, etc.
it just won't work due to the delays.

But, in my case (I live out in the country), I can't get DSL, cable, or even
ISDN so it was my only choice (other than a poor 28K dialup from my
location). I believe I would take ISDN over Starband if just due to the
latency. DSL would be a dream compared to Starband.

Regards,

Charlie

RE: satellite connection

2001-09-26 Thread Dennis Atherton

The offering from Radio Shack / MSN is the same service as Starband, but
they make you buy the complete computer. They don't want to be liable for
computer problems. The Starband Offering uses a USB box, to act as
transmitter and receiver. Goes to a dish that does 2-way communications.

DirectPC - the Hughes satellite offering - had for 2 years offered Sat
Downloads, with a 56K modem for uploads. They are now offering 2-way
communications - with SAT both ways, but are much more restrictive on what
you can use it for.

Hope this helps.

DirecTV has a satellite internet service called DirecPC

Ps. There is a service in NYC as my friend has one, he states it gives about

RE: satellite connection

2001-09-26 Thread Keith Johnson

Starband has a new version called 360. It uses USB or Ethernet. Use the
ethernet connection with a DSL/Cable router (Linksys BEFSR41) it works
great. (well OK, great for satellite)
