SOLVED -- RE: server locks up

2011-05-31 Thread John Aldrich
Ok... it looks like everything is copacetic now that I have uninstalled
ICVerify. The system rebooted normally this weekend and was up and running
this morning when I came in. I'm reasonably certain that it's working
properly now.

Thanks to all who helped.

RE: SOLVED -- RE: server locks up

2011-05-31 Thread John Aldrich
Not sure... and the spelling may be off too. :D It's something I've
heard/used for a LONG time... dates back, I think, to the 60's and 70's. (I
know... I'm showing my age. *grin*)

According to dictionary.com it's even older than I thought... apparently
it's from the late 19-teens and early 1920's. Here's the information it has
on the derivation...
–adjective Slang .
fine; completely satisfactory; OK.

Word Origin History

copacetic
1919, but it may have origins in 19c. Amer.Eng. Southern black speech.
Origin unknown, suspects include Latin, Yiddish (cf. Heb. kol b'seder ),
Italian, Louisiana French ( coupe-sétique ), and Native American. None is
considered convincing by linguists.

I was lost with that too, and I am from Somerset, so definitely not a UK thing

A quick google suggests American and Canadian slang for very good/excellent/etc.

I guess John should now be able to disabled the job to reboot the server and
see how it goes

RE: SOLVED -- RE: server locks up

2011-05-31 Thread John Aldrich
Well, I've got it down to once a week. Since we're pretty much just a
Monday-Friday organization. I'm just paranoid about it locking up in the middle
of the week since it handles file/print/dns/dhcp/etc. :D

I was lost with that too, and I am from Somerset, so definitely not a UK thing ☺

A quick google suggests American and Canadian slang for very good/excellent/etc.

I guess John should now be able to disabled the job to reboot the server and
see how it goes….

So what was the resolution on this problem?

Jason

I've got a Dell Poweredge 2900 that keeps locking up for no apparent reason
that I can find. Nothing in the event logs...just the logs stop at a certain
point. If I reboot the server on a regular basis (2 or 3 times per week)
it's all good, but I hate to do that. I'd like to find out what's causing
this problem. Any suggestions where to start since there appears to be
nothing in the event logs?

Server is Windows 2003 and is one of our DCs.

Not positive it *is* resolved, however I have a strong suspicion that the
problem was due to a bad software package, namely ICVerify. I have removed that
piece of software and this morning the server was up and running still
(successful automatic reboot over the weekend.) I'll continue to monitor and if
it *does* lock up again, I'll let y'all know. :D

RE: server locks up

2011-05-19 Thread John Aldrich
Yeah… it’s got printers on it. It does everything: DNS, file/print sharing,
DHCP, DC. I don’t *think* any machines are still using this server for
printing, so I suppose I could try disabling print serving and see if that
helps. Funny thing is that it's identical twin up the hill doesn't do this.
*shrug*

What roles does this server perform? We’ve had the print spooler service do
this before.

My method if the logs reveal nothing would be
Check the fans and heatsink if ok
Test memory if ok
Test the Harddrives if hardware is ok then you've a software problem.

Don't you think you should have checcked that option before bringing it to the
list?

Test the memory with memtest on a bootable cd, though rebooting the server
every 2-3 days sounds like a software program with a memory leak.

Rule #1 Develop a plan.
Rule #2 Follow the plan.

RE: server locks up

2011-05-19 Thread John Aldrich
Yeah... well, I did clean it up to just a hair over 2 gigs free on the C:
drive. I don't really think I can afford to reboot the server during work
hours...but I'll see if I can't stay over a bit and test it after hours.

I suspect that you may be right on the memory leak. I think I may even know
what it was... I think it might have been ICVerify. Since we're not using that
any more, I went ahead and uninstalled it. With any luck, that'll clear it up.

Don't you think you should have checcked that option before bringing it to the
list?

Test the memory with memtest on a bootable cd, though rebooting the server
every 2-3 days sounds like a software program with a memory leak.

Rule #1 Develop a plan.
Rule #2 Follow the plan.

jason

One other option I'm thinking of is that I may be running low on disk space on
the C:\ drive. I'm trying to free up a few hundred megs more to bring it up to
2 gigs free.

a Dell server support incident (unless HW parts were involved). In fact, I
believe it's been less than a year since I needed them on an issue with a

If you do not yet have DSET up and running, they will link you to the
version most appropriate for your server as well.

Ouch. I'd highly suggest support contracts on all, but definitely DCs. You
can usually reinstate for cheap not sure what one off calls costs.

They cover everything hardware, and even MS products. I've used them before
for Exchange help, and couldn't believe the knowledge they had, and how they
bent over backwards to help me with it.

Yep. I just got out of chat with a Dell technician. We ran a couple
diagnostics and it appears that the hardware is good. He pointed out that
we're getting errors trying to log in as John Dough. We don't *have* that
user, even as a test user. I suspect that may have been related to the
ICVerify software that I uninstalled this morning, though.

Our prim-and-proper, Sunday School Teacher of an accountant would become

Together we once pulled out the manual to read, cover-to-cover. Somewhere

RE: server locks up

2011-05-19 Thread John Aldrich
That's *definitely* worthy of a Cats/Coffee warning. :D

Ah yes, one of my favorite products!

Our prim-and-proper, Sunday School Teacher of an accountant would become
quite foul-mouthed and profane trying to get that thing to settle payments.

Together we once pulled out the manual to read, cover-to-cover.  Somewhere
on the first page it described itself as the industry leader in POS
software.  We hurt ourselves laughing over that one...

You need to enable CrashOnCtrlScroll
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff545499(v=vs.85).aspx and then crash
the box next time it is hung. I can look at the dump.

If you can, get download the Ultimate Boot CD. Run CPU/RAM tests.

When I have the occasional lock up, and it is hardware related, those tests
have isolated the problem.

My method if the logs reveal nothing would be Check the fans and heatsink if ok
Test memory if ok Test the Harddrives if hardware is ok then you've a software
problem.

Thanks,
