I've *seen* CyberPower in server class configurations, but I've never had an
opportunity to use them in that capacity.

So nothing in a "server" class that you've had very long?

I'm actually in the process of shopping for a new UPS system for the
server room. (Finally got a green light on the much-needed server
upgrade; yay!) I'm looking at models with extended run options, in
the ~ 1800 to 2000 VA range (20 amp, 110 volt supply). So far it
looks like the APC SMX2200RMLV2U has the best bang for the buck -- the
main unit is more expensive, but you get a lot more runtime
efficiency, so you don't need as many batteries.

I have 2 UPS at home one for the PCs in the office, and a second one in the
loft powering my routers, switch and NAS (and soon CCTV, so I might need to
upgrade that unit).

John, trust me, have your PC or at least one PC with all your management tools

headless chicken in the event of a power failure.

Oh, that wouldn't be enough...

I now have two 1500VA CyberPower units -- one for each Hyper-V host server
I also have two 1000VA APC units -- one for my desktop (and peripherals) and
one for the boys computer (and peripherals)
I have the switches, routers and WiFi on an APC 500 unit (soon to be a
CyberPower 600VA)

Various other peripherals, like NAS and USB drives, are spread across the
other units.

I have one 1000VA with a bad battery that is a spare (once I get its battery
replaced). Virtualization has made things much easier, in many ways.

I'll match that at top it with a Guardian automatic standby generator.
What's the point of having a generator if you aren't there to start and
hook it up. Basement would still flood.

The overwhelming majority of my critical equipment has dual power supplies,
which I always connect to separate UPSs. So if one UPS exhibits this
behavior, the equipment will stay up and running.

I realize this only addresses the symptom and not the root cause, but it
might help.

RE: The U in UPS stands for...?

2011-08-11 Thread John Hornbuckle
The overwhelming majority of my critical equipment has dual power supplies,
which I always connect to separate UPSs. So if one UPS exhibits this behavior,
the equipment will stay up and running.

I realize this only addresses the symptom and not the root cause, but it might
help.

Sorry, but I can't call that a "smart ups" either. What are they thinking?

We recently replaced our HP 3000 UPS's (which I believe to be APC
units), with actual APC's. I don't like em either.. they behave funkily.

I had a "what the heck" moment after reading the first line. It's so
ridiculous, you almost have to think you're misunderstanding something. I
guess the assumption is that the power fails more often than the battery so
it's a net gain for uptime.

Tis a shame, though... I remember when APC was synonymous with unquestioned

RE: The U in UPS stands for...?

2011-08-10 Thread Terry Dickson
I have had this happen before but usually it was shortly before the entire UPS
died.

I had a "what the heck" moment after reading the first line. It's so
ridiculous, you almost have to think you're misunderstanding something. I
guess the assumption is that the power fails more often than the battery so
it's a net gain for uptime.

"The UPS has an automatic self-test feature which periodically tests the
battery. When the battery needs to be replaced, the UPS will indicate this by
dropping the load."

We lost all phones and networking for a few minutes in one of our buildings
today. The APC Smart-UPS powering the comm rack did a self-test; apparently it
didn't like the battery and dropped the load during the test. It re-powered
itself after, but with "Replace Battery" lit now. This is the second time this
year I've had a Smart-UPS do that. I've had it happen to me before, too.
What's the point of a self-test if the behavior is identical to failing during
operation?

F'ing APC. I bet the batteries are swollen and stuck in the unit, too.

RE: The U in UPS stands for...?

2011-08-10 Thread Sam Cayze
Same here, I've had it happen. Sucks.
Just pulled out a battery this morning that looks like this:

Could barely get it out, thought for sure I was going to have to buy another
UPS.
