+1 on Paragon Partition Manager, it's my tool of choice when I need to
resize partitions.

Haven't tried it on a RAID 5 array tho.

As others have mentioned Acronis DiskDirector does the job, and we use it
here extensively on ESX guests. The problem we ran into with DiskDirector
is the lack of x64 support and no support for Windows Server 2008. We have
since moved to Paragon's Partition Manager 10.0 Server Edition. Almost
identical to DiskDirector, but it also supports x64 and Windows Server

Another option: (Try only after taking a full bare metal backup)

If both the C and D are both are of same RAID group and are logically
partitioned - convert the volumes to Dynamic. Shrink the D drive by let's say
10GB and expand the C drive by 10GB.

My wording may be slightly obtuse, but crux is converting disk to dynamic
should work for you as well..

That's a good question. I've only tried gparted on a raid once. It
was a raid 1 and insted of seeing it as one drive to adjust the
partiton it showed it as two identical drives with identical
partitions.. I decided not to use it because I didn't know what would
happen if I resized the system partition on both drives of the raid 1.
It was a production box and didn't want to screw it up.

I just got two new servers for a client and will have to test it on
one after I load the OS.

RE: Resizing C partition in Server 2003

2010-01-23 Thread Carl Houseman
Any bootable partitioning tool that doesn't run under Windows can access
drives that have BIOS support enabled. If a RAID partition is bootable,
then it has BIOS support enabled.

However performance through the BIOS can be really bad sometimes and any
repartitioning that involves resizing or sliding may take a lot longer than
expected.

Piece of cake with virtual machines - join the hard drive to another server,
expand it using diskpart, join it back to original server. I'm pretty sure
Windows 2008 can do a c: expansion natively with diskpart - upgrading may
save you a lot of messing about. I'm not sure about the 2008 bit though,
some Googling may help

RE: Resizing C partition in Server 2003

2010-01-22 Thread Damien Solodow
Never used this tool to do it, but I've successfully used others before.
Moving the D partition may take a while as it requires actually moving
the data.

Subject: Resizing C partition in Server 2003

Anyone ever expanded a C partition in a multi-partitioned RAID-5 server?

Client needs to do so to add new software. Any time I've thought about
doing
this it has been: back up twice, verify backups, blow away D partition,
expand
C, add D partition, restore from backup. Client uses Acronis to back up
server
and when he talked to their sales people they sold him this $600
program, which
I had never heard of:

--- Included Stuff Follows ---
  Acronis Disk Director Server 10.0

Windows and Linux partitioning tool: create, fix, format, delete,
remove,
resize and repair Windows and Linux partitions

The suite includes the Acronis Partition Expert product which allows
you
to automatically or manually merge, split, resize, copy, and move
partitions without losing data. It also lets you reorganize the hard
disk
drive structure, optimize disk space usage and much more.

- Included Stuff Ends -

He's says he's going to try this, and I may get to pick up the pieces
;-)
