[nysbirds-l] Owling

2013-11-19 Thread Ken McDermott
Hi Folks, Stopped by "Galeville"(Shawangunk Grasslands) late this afternoon and enjoyed a visit with The Mayor, Ralph Tabor, and the Short-eared Owls rose up at 4:30pm and started their patrols.  We counted 4 of them before I left. At home in the Town of Newburgh at 10:55pm a pair of Great-horned Owls were duetting from two houses away.  I hope they have a successful nesting season later in the winter. Any Owl day is a GREAT day! Regards, Ken McDermott

[nysbirds-l] Environs Orient

2013-11-19 Thread Rick & Linda Kedenburg
11-19-13 Gettysburg Address Day. If you haven't read it in some time
please take the time to read it again. (Rick's Soapbox)

The following observations are from a North Fork Audubon field trip
this morning.

Causeway & Orient Yacht Club;
Red-Throated Loon

Narrow River Road;
Bufflehead, C Loon, Several Great Blue Heron, Northern Harrier (Gray
Ghost), Red-tailed Hawk, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Chipping Sparrow,
Savannah-Ipiwsch type, No Seaside Sparrows, Song, Swamp, White-
throated, White-crowned Sparrows, DE Junco, House Finch.

Orient Point-Plum Gut
Common Eider, Long-tailed Duck, Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Orient State Park;
Bufflehead, C. Loon, Cormorant, Many BC Chickadees, Yellow-rumped
Warblers, and DE Juncos in the scrubby pines near the kayak rental
area. We noticed upon arriving and leaving the park two distinct
flocks of Snow Buntings. ( some in fine plumage ) The first flock was
at the 1/2 mile marker and consisted of 30 birds. The Second was in
the area of the beach and comfort station at the main parking lot and
was about 25 birds. On the road leaving the park ( at about the 1
mile marker ) there were many White-throated Sparrows & DE Juncos.

BTW: No one showed up for the field trip. Linda & I decided to lead
it anyway for ourselves. It was a glorious day out there. Windy, but
not too cold. Watching the creatures around us we thought of the cold
times ahead for many of then and the constant search for food and
shelter. Somehow they carry on, sometimes the better partners in life
of even our own human sprit.

Our Speakers will be Eric Salzman
doing a presentation on The Birds of Israel

Israel is situated on one of
the world’s greatest migration routes. Raptors, land birds and
wetlands species traveling between Africa and Eurasia all pass
through and Israel is the only country on their route where they
are not trapped or shot. It also has a large population of
wintering birds from the Mediterranean and Middle East
(including the world’s greatest concentrations of cranes and

There are now birding centers on many of the kibbutzim on the
Mediterranean, in the Jordan Valley and in the desert. Eric

when wintering birds, migrants and breeders all overlap. He
traveled the country from bottom to top and from west to east to
visit many of the top sites and environments.
Eric Salzman is a composer active in new music-theater as well
as an active birder and writer on birds and natural history.

Additionally - we will be collecting
empty ink cartridges, toner cartridges, old cell phones, and

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, North End: Purple Finch, Northern Pintail & Bald Eagle, 11/19

2013-11-19 Thread Nadir Souirgi
I had a great morning semi-birding on my very protracted way to work today.
Highlights include: 5+ Purple Finch in the Great Hill's South Blowdown Meadow,
4 Fox Sparrows along the eastern edge of the G.H., at least one Rusty
Blackbird, and probably a few more still, mixed in with a large flock of Common
Grackles at the southeast corner of the Pool, a Northern Pintail was also in
the Pool (I'm wondering if this is a lingering bird, the one first
found/reported by Sandra Paci?), and finally, a juvenile Bald Eagle flying west
and relatively low over The park at 104th street.

Of general interest, there was/is a large movement of icterids (300+), Cedar
Waxwings (120+) and other diurnal migrants passing over and or dropping into
the North End of C.P. today creating good conditions for other notable
sightings. I would also be on the lookout for other large dark raptors, I'm
thinking someone might bag a Golden today. Below is my complete eBird checklist
from this morning.

[nysbirds-l] Jamaica Bay East Pond Notes...

2013-11-19 Thread Andrew Baksh
Shorebirds are still filtering through our area on the East Pond with the
majority being Dunilns. However, with a little luck I have been finding
some late goodies in *Western Sandpipers*, *Semipalmated Sandpipers*,
*White-rumped
Sandpipers* and *PECTORAL SANDPIPERS*. Some photos are posted to my blog (
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/11/jamaica-bay-shorebird-migration.html)
including linking to a very interesting read on a recent study on the
*"Timekeeping
of birds relating to early migration"*. Worth reading.

Waterfowl numbers continue to build slowly but surely with Buffleheads
showing up now on the pond. One interesting observation has been the
number of Canada Geese build up with over 800 as of yesterday. I don't
recall seeing this many on the East Pond this early and I am sure the lack
of a viable West Pond has something to do with this.

The behavior of the Snow Geese has also been a bit peculiar; they are not
staying long on the pond at all and seem quite spooked. A far contrast from
a few weeks ago when they would fly in and settle on the pond staying for
some time knowing that I was on the pond scoping them out. I am not sure
what has made them so unsettled.

Another note, on Sunday I noticed that access to the berm on the North End
of the East Pond was off limits with the gate closed at the Crossbay
entrance. I have put in an inquiry to National Parks Service about this
because that gate was a temporary fixture in place when Hurricane Sandy
repair efforts were underway by MTA. As far as I know, it should not be
utilized by Transit because that road is Gateway property up to the MTA
area.

However as some of you may remember our very own Mike Feder during the
summer was asked to leave by MTA security when attempting to access the
East Pond from that end. I had asked NPS to address that issue and we had
no further incidents. This gate closing could be legitimate *(I would want
to know the reasons)* or MTA flexing their muscles again.

I'll keep the list serve posted on what I learn especially for those Queens
CBC folks who would need access to scout as well as on count day.

Cheers From The Bay!

[nysbirds-l] Syracuse late season hummingbird

2013-11-19 Thread Drew Weber
This morning Joe Brin and I visited a home in Syracuse that still has a
hummingbird coming in to the feeders. When I talked to the homeowner, they
were pretty certain that it wasn't a Rufous so I had a lot of other
ambitions for this hummingbird, with Calliope and Black-chinned showing up
recently in surrounding states.

The hummingbird turned out to be an immature female Ruby-throated
Hummingbird, although I would love some critical eyes to look over the
photos and tell me I am wrong.

2013-11-19 Thread Rick Linda Kedenburg
11-19-13 Gettysburg Address Day. If you haven't read it in some time
please take the time to read it again. (Rick's Soapbox)

The following observations are from a North Fork Audubon field trip
this morning.

Causeway  Orient Yacht Club;
Red-Throated Loon

Narrow River Road;
Bufflehead, C Loon, Several Great Blue Heron, Northern Harrier (Gray
Ghost), Red-tailed Hawk, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Chipping Sparrow,
Savannah-Ipiwsch type, No Seaside Sparrows, Song, Swamp, White-
throated, White-crowned Sparrows, DE Junco, House Finch.

Orient Point-Plum Gut
Common Eider, Long-tailed Duck, Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Orient State Park;
On the road leaving the park ( at about the 1
mile marker ) there were many White-throated Sparrows DE Juncos.

BTW: No one showed up for the field trip. Linda I decided to lead
it anyway for ourselves. It was a glorious day out there. Windy, but
not too cold. Watching the creatures around us we thought of the cold
times ahead for many of then and the constant search for food and

A short visit, between 3:30 3:45 PM today, to the above produced my FOS
Snow Goose (1), ,as well as my FOS Hooded Mergansers (3). Also, a single
T.V. passed overhead.

Cheers,
Bob

[nysbirds-l] Owling

2013-11-19 Thread Ken McDermott
Hi Folks,Stopped by "Galeville"(Shawangunk Grasslands)late this afternoon and enjoyed a visit with The Mayor, Ralph Tabor, and the Short-eared Owls rose up at 4:30pm and started their patrols. We counted 4 of them before I left.At home in the Town of Newburgh at 10:55pm a pair of Great-horned Owls were duetting from two houses away. I hope they have a successful nesting season later in the winter.Any Owl day is a GREAT day!Regards,Ken McDermott
