[nysbirds-l] Brants heading back North and notes from Massapequa Preserve: Screech Owls and Wilson's Snipe

2014-03-25 Thread Taylor, Robert Michael
Hi Everyone,

On the way to work today, I saw 3 groups of Brants heading North in the
vicinity of Wantagh and Freeport: 2 groups of 100+ and one group of 10. I've
seen much larger groups and have seen Brants until at least mid-April so
perhaps this is the beginning of their trip back North.

I was at the Massapequa Preserve for about an hour Sunday and saw the
continuing grey morph Screech Owl but the red morph must've been tucked away.
After today, I'm no longer going to report the Screech Owls - they've been at
the Preserve for 2 years (released from a rehab) and have made it their home.
I didn't see the Wilson's Snipe, but it's a hit or miss thing. ***I know of
one birder in past reports who apparently thinks it's "cute" to find the Snipe
by "flushing" it out - please don't "locate" the Snipe this way - you know who
you are.***

I also stopped at Wertheim's National Refuge in Shirley but didn't see anything
unusual: Red Tailed Hawk, Green Winged Teal and Hooded Mergansers were most
notable.

Good birding,
Rob in Massapequa

[nysbirds-l] Eagle over Kissena Park Queens NY this morning

2014-03-25 Thread Cesar Castillo
As I arrived this morning at the park, from the Velodrome I saw an eagle flying
on the north side of the park from west to east.  It was a black bird about at
least as big as a turkey vulture but too far for me to tell what it was, also
the line of trees obstructed my view and ability to take a quick photo.  It
lacked any white on the underwing, no v-shaped wing posture.
Just a heads up for eastern Queens/Long Island.

The red-breasted merganser continues but no common mergansers this morning.
Brown thrasher, Merlin, Fox Sparrows continue, and there were still 5 woodcocks
last night, but none were flushed out this morning.

RE:[nysbirds-l] Brooklyn March 22nd

2014-03-25 Thread keir randall

On further review it looks like our recent Eurasian Wigeon may actually be a
hybrid American x Eurasian (dark area around eye, lighter cheek etc.)
Apologies to all for the bad steer on this one.
cheers

An enthusiastic band of Brooklyn Bird Club members hit a few sites in Kings
County today.
In addition to the expected species we saw a drake Eurasian Wigeon at Coney
Island Creek. At the same spot Dennis Hrehowsik found what we presume to be a
partially leucistic Ring-billed Gull.

[nysbirds-l] Red-necked Grebe, Brooklyn Bridge Park

2014-03-25 Thread Matthew Wills
There was a Red-necked Grebe fishing between Piers 5 and 6 this afternoon at
Brooklyn Bridge Park. The bird is showing a touch of breeding color at the top
of its neck.

There will be a pic on my blog… soonish.

Cheers,
Matthew

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Birds (Nassau Co.)

2014-03-25 Thread Ken Feustel
Despite the date, a mornings birding at Jones Beach State Park yielded a nice
winter bird list. We started out at the West End Boat Basin, where a few
breeding-plumaged Horned Grebes were the highlight. We then headed over to the
Fisherman’s parking lot, birding along the Inlet jetty. The Red-necked Grebe
was still present at the mouth of the Inlet, and a Piping Plover was sitting on
the jetty. At the south end of the jetty we saw our first Northern Gannets
(two) since January. There was a steady stream of Tree Swallows in groups of
2-3 crossing the Inlet from Pt. Lookout. At the end of the jetty were five
Harlequin Ducks. In the dune area west of the parking lot a small number of
Tree Sparrows continued. Walking back on the north side of the parkway towards
the boat basin we spied the Northern Shrike perched up in the trees between the
Fisherman’s parking lot and the parkway. A search of Zach’s Bay area was not
particularly productive, a lone Merlin being the only bird of interest.

Think Spring!

[nysbirds-l] Central Park, NYC 3/25

2014-03-25 Thread Thomas Fiore

Tuesday, 25 March 2014 - Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City

The RED-NECKED GREBE continued as it has for a full 2 weeks now at the
reservoir; in the noon-hour today seen swimming off the north shore
buildings (pumphouse etc.) as it seems to have been on many recent
days. It may not hang in a lot longer, but if it does it will be
interesting to see if some further breeding color comes in.

Also continuing at the reservoir: drake American Wigeon at the se
corner w/many N. Shovelers, & at least 5 Wood Ducks, a drake Red-
breasted Merganser, a few Ruddy Ducks, few American Coots,
Buffleheads, & Hooded Mergansers. Not all that many gulls at noon, and
a quick look revealed no uncommon sp. there... but always worth
looking. Other areas looked at in the park either seemed to have some
of the same, or fewer birds than recently... I came across no phoebes
today although may have been some somewhere and of course many should
arrive in the coming week or so. A look at the Meer revealed nothing
uncommon, and I saw that others may still be seeking snipes - good
thought, but try in multiple locations...

good birding,

Tom Fiore
