[nysbirds-l] Turkey Vultures/ Riverhead, Suffolk County: A preliminary status report.

2015-04-13 Thread robert adamo
Tonight at 6:45 PM, I had 9 T.V's. flying low between the LIRR tracks at
Ostrander Ave, and E. Main St., near the L.I. Aquarium/ Atlantis Marine
World. This location is quite close to the roost that held up to 30 of this
specie, before the 2-3 largest (of ~ 10 mature pine trees) were taken down,
causing the birds to head out, and stay away...at least up until this
spring. A short time after the "tree trim", I stopped to speak to the lady
(Mary) whom I thought was the owner of the property, whose trees held the
roosting T.V's. and to whom I must have spoken to a dozen times, without
being told they belonged to her new neighbor I He must have been worried
about the liability involved (the trees extending well over her detached
garage) prompting him to remove the threat.

Fast forwarding now to the middle of last week, I had a reason to be back
on the same block and found 12 vultures roosting in the 2 largest,
remaining pines. After getting no response from "Mary's" house, I knocked
at her neighbor's door, and found her home. I explained my past and present
interest in the birds, and how an influx of birders might effect her
family's activities. She, of course, wanted to speak to her husband first,
and then call me re: their wishes. To date, I haven't received her call,
and therefore, was holding up on posting the particulars, until I do !

Cheers,
Bob

2015-04-13 Thread Dennis Hrehowsik
Don't forget to join the Brooklyn Bird Club Tomorrow, Tuesday, April 14,
7:00 PM for:

Exploring in the 21st Century: Ornithological Field Work in the Highlands
of Papua New Guinea

Presenter: Paul Sweet

Location: Brooklyn Public Library Central Branch
at Grand Army Plaza

This past fall, Paul Sweet and a team of specialists from the American
Museum of Natural History headed out to one of the most remote areas in the
world in search of new species and specimens: Papua New Guinea. What did
they find? Hear about this amazing expedition at tonight's presentation.

Paul Sweet was born in Bristol, England, and has been interested in birds for
as long as he can remember. After completing a degree in zoology at the
University of Liverpool, he traveled in the Americas and Asia for several
years before working in the Raffles Museum in Singapore. In 1991 he moved
to New York to work at the American Museum of Natural History, where he is
now the Collections Manager in the Ornithology Department.

[nysbirds-l] Queens County Bird Club - Upcoming Meeting - Wed. 04/15/2015 - Eugene Harris will present "Ancestors in Our Genome: The New Science of Human Evolution"

2015-04-13 Thread Nancy Tognan
The *Queens County Bird Club Inc.* will be meeting at the Alley Pond
Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Blvd Douglaston, NY 11362
 >Map of location<
at 8:00 pm on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Free admission. Refreshments
served.

Public transportation users: Meeting location is one mile from Bayside LIRR
station; you can either walk, take Q12 bus, or use car service located at
station.

Our speaker will be Prof. Eugene Harris, presenting "Ancestors in Our
Genome: The New Science of Human Evolution"

Two of the biggest scientific breakthroughs in paleoanthropology
occurred in 2010. Not only had we determined a draft genome of an extinct
Neandertal from bones that lay in the Earth for tens of thousands of years,
but the genome from another heretofore unknown ancient human relative,
dubbed the Denisovans, was also announced. An over one-hundred year old
conundrum was finally answered: did we mate with Neandertals? It was now
undeniable that modern humans, with all our modern features had met and
mated with both of these extinct human-like beings. The questions are now:
what are the consequences of archaic DNA in our genomes?

These breakthroughs open a window of fresh air onto the
field of anthropology after many decades of speculation. We are also making
base-by-base comparisons of our genome with our primate cousins and finding
some of the genomic bases of our unique features - our large and complex
brains, our complex cognition and spoken language. Simultaneously, we are
learning more about the continuum existing between us and other primates.
Darwin presciently wrote "the difference in mind between man and the higher
animals, great as it is, certainly is one of degree and not of kind."
Today, we are realizing Darwin's dream.

Genomes allow us to probe how human populations adapted to
hot and cold climates, high altitudes, different diets, and to myriad
pathogens we encountered in our world-colonization. Already well-underway,
is a large project collecting thousands of genomes of peoples from around
the world. By comparing them, we are discovering ancient footprints left by
natural selection. Surprisingly, pathogens appear to have left some of the
largest footprints in our genome.

The genomic highway has an unchecked speed limit. We are
unlocking fascinating secrets about our ancestry at an exhilarating pace.
This talk will give an overview of how full genomes from living humans, our
primate relatives and our extinct archaic cousins are reinventing the
science of human evolution.

Dr. Eugene E. Harris is a professor of Biological Sciences
and Geology at the City University of New York and an affiliated Researcher
with the Center for the Study of Human Origins at New York University.
Signed copies of his book will be available for sale at this meeting.

[nysbirds-l] Hempstead Lake SP.

2015-04-13 Thread syschiff
Hempstead Lake SP 13 Apr

We finally had a small wave of warblers this morning consisting of PINE, PALM,
YELLOW-RUMPED and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS. Other recent additions were
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER. Surprising was the lack of any
sparrow movement. While the Tree Swallows came down over South Pond, for he
most part, they were foraging way up in the air.

A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK posed in the woods close to the stream path until driven
off by the Blue Jays, then settling not far off. It seems everyone has a camera
these days. Before the jays got too rambunctious, there was a great photo-op
going. Not to be overlooked, a pair of brilliant male WOOD DUCKS livened the
parking lot pond.

[nysbirds-l] Winter Wren/Vesper Sparrow/Tree Swallow/Yellow-bellied Sapsucker & more

2015-04-13 Thread Joan Collins
4/13/15 Long Lake (home & Sabattis Circle Road in Hamilton Co.)

Well, the migration flood gates finally opened in the central Adirondacks!
It reached 75 degrees in Long Lake today. There is still a lot of snow and
ice to melt, but spring has finally arrived. Here are some
first-of-the-season birds today:

*Wood Duck - Little Tupper Lake outlet

*Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - drumming outside our home

*Tree Swallow - by the inlet of Little Tupper Lake

*Winter Wren - singing outside our house (late arrival this year)

*Chipping Sparrow - several by the inlet of Little Tupper Lake

*Vesper Sparrow - several by the inlet of Little Tupper Lake

*Purple Finch - at our feeders

Our Common Redpoll numbers swelled in the past couple weeks - I suspect
because many people have stopped feeding. We have had over 500 redpolls and
I am going through a LOT of seed. I've observed a Hoary Redpoll several
times. We continue to have Pine Siskins and Amer. Goldfinches - and now
Purple Finches. There are many Dark-eyed Juncos and Song Sparrows also.

A River Otter was observed bounding and sliding across (still frozen) Little
Tupper Lake - adorable! I caught a video with my camera through the car
window - posted to my Facebook page at:
https://www.facebook.com/AdirondackAvian . I left to go to Sabattis Bog,
and when I came back, the otter was returning and it bounded and slid across
the lake, and then slid into the open water near the inlet of the Little
Tupper Lake (just opening up).

We have a Dark-eyed Junco singing an unusual song at our home - I recorded
it.

Many Golden-crowned Kinglets left the central Adirondacks this past winter,
and seemed to have returned over the past few days - they are everywhere
again!

A Blue Jay imitated a Broad-winged Hawk outside our house - it fooled me
once again!

4/12/15 Long Lake (home & Sabattis Circle Road in Hamilton Co.)

First-of-the-season:

*Rusty Blackbird - at least one vocalizing as it flew over Sabattis Bog

*Brown-headed Cowbird - 3 at our home eating corn put down for Wild Turkeys

A Northern Shrike was vocalizing at the inlet of Little Tupper Lake - such
interesting sounds!

Our Common Redpolls hit a high and consumed the most seed all season.

4/10/15 Long Lake

A Dark-eyed Junco was singing its typical song at Sabattis Bog. I also
heard a Song Sparrow song - but it was coming from the junco! This bird
sang its typical song and then sang a Song Sparrow-sounding song, and then
its typical song again - back and forth! A Boreal Chickadee and a Gray Jay
vocalized at Sabattis Bog.

The first waterfowl was observed on the small area of open water under the
Long Lake bridge - a pair of Hooded Mergansers.

4/6/15 Long Lake

I forgot I left our baby monitor on high (to bring in outside sounds). At
exactly 4:59 a.m., a Barred Owl started to vocalized - it lifted my husband
and I out of bed! It must have been a few feet from the monitor and the
monitor was turned all the way up! I loved it and my husband was annoyed!

A Blue Jay imitated a Broad-winged Hawk near our feeders.

4/5/15 Long Lake

I was observing waterfowl at the Little Tupper Lake outlet when a migrant
*Eastern Meadowlark was observed on the ice near the open water! It flew to
within a few feet of me, looked startled and then flew off! A very unusual
bird to find in this location.

4/4/15 Long Lake

A Sharp-shinned Hawk attempted to kill a Black-capped Chickadee at Sabattis
Bog, but missed. Two Barred Owls were heard outside our house.

4/3/15 Long Lake

The night after the Barred Owl died outside our home (after visiting for 17
days), another Barred Owl moved in. (& two have been heard frequently ever
since) I watched the owl hunt and capture a small mammal.

Hi all,
The nightjar that Gabriel Willow found this morning is a Chuck-wills-widow. I
just saw it now during my lunch hour and on the scene were a group of birders
who were discussing the id and some thought Whip-poor-will.

Points to note are size, large flat head, long wings that are crossing each
other over the tail, almost reaching tail tip. All those are characteristic for
Chuck.

The id has also been confirmed by Andrew Farnsworth.

If you have the opportunity, go watch this bird. It's in an open location and
you'll get great views. While I was there it moved around a bit and was
preening itself.

good birding, and thanks Gabriel for a great find,

Re: [ebirdsnyc] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Nightjar in Bryant Park NYC

2015-04-13 Thread Gabriel Willow
I'm pretty confident at this point that it's a female Chuck-Will's-Widow:
female by buffy undertail with no white visible. Phil Jeffrey's post from a
couple years back has some very helpful points:

http://www.philjeffrey.net/ChuckWhip.html

Like those birds, this one shows a uniformly warm buff undertail, and the whole
bird is fairly warm brown. It appeared large and large-headed (although not as
large as some other Chucks I've seen). I'm not sure this is a good field mark
(it's surprisingly hard to find good, diagnostic information on this stuff, I
need a copy of Pyle I guess) but on a Whip-poor-will, the black borders of the
"braces" appear in pictures to be more solid, further emphasizing the paler
braces. On the Chuck, the border is a series of smaller black spots, which was
the case in this bird. The throat was brownish, the same tone as breast. In a
Whip I believe the throat would be darker and the breast/belly grayer & paler.

Any other clinchers I'm missing?

Cheers,

Gabriel Willow

There is a sleeping nightjar, I think a Whippoorwill, on a horizontal
branch on the Eastern side of Bryant Park behind library, near NE corner
 of lawn.

Many other species present as well.

RE: [nysbirds-l] YES Caracara Golf course

2015-04-13 Thread Philip Ribolow
Classification: Public

Last night, 4/12, the Caracara was roosting on the Golf Course access road on
the left side driving towards the gate, just over the tiny bridge (really a 2
foot steel plate). When I left at 8:15PM it was still there.

2015-04-13 Thread Brian Whipple
For Gmail users:

Go to Settings, then click the Filters tab, then create the following
filter:

   - *to: *NYSBIRDS-L@cornell.edu; *Do this: *Never send it to Spam

I frequently get emails from the NYSBirds-L and ebirdsNYC lists with a
yellow banner in the top of the email reading "This message was not sent to
Spam because of a filter you created"—including the email from Gabriel this
morning.

Here's a Google help page on using filters

Re: [ebirdsnyc] Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Nightjar in Bryant Park NYC

2015-04-13 Thread Andrew Baksh
Without getting into a lengthy e-mail the issue with Yahoo and Aol has to do
with both Yahoo and Aol changing their Domain-based Message Authentication,
Reporting and Conformance (DMARC) policy such that “all other mail services
[are to] reject emails claiming to come from a Yahoo user, but not signed by
Yahoo.”

This policy was put in place to address "spoofing." I won't bore anyone with
more but be aware that Gmail could follow suit.
