Re: [nysbirds-l] Barn Swallow question

2021-06-08 Thread Jane Ross
We usually have 9 or 10 pairs of tree swallows nesting in boxes in our yard.
Several years ago I purchased a down pillow just for them, and toss some
feathers in the air for them once they begin to settle on houses (after an
initial period of fairly violent arguing over housing rights...we are in East
Hampton, after all) They catch the feathers in the air, or swoop to snatch them
off the ground, and yes, often do seem to be playing...dropping the feathers
from high up and then flying low to grab them again. I'm always amazed when I
clean out the nests after fledging to see the impressive size of some of the
white feathers they have managed to collect for the nests, some from sea gulls
I imagine, as well as some of the ones I have provided.

[nysbirds-l] Fishing phoebe in East Hampton

2021-03-08 Thread Jane Ross
Three of us observed the fishing phoebe again working the little pools at the
Georgica Cove Hollow inlet again yesterday afternoon. There was at least one
successful catch, and one photo of a non/fish (probably some sort of larva),
although sadly no further photos of the bird eating fish. Hopefully more soon.
She seems quite determined! Often present late afternoon for those interested

In addition to the Coopers, there are eagles (including a juvenile) and
harriers working to pond and the fields, and sadly also at least two feral
cats...and it seems that the fox den on the Peconic Land Trust field is
occupied as well... and maybe the song sparrows are simply molting??

I took a short trip out to the end of Gerard Drive to check that area after the
storm. It was nice to see a pair of bald eagles on a nest (usurped from osprey
2 years ago; retaken by osprey last year). In addition, there were a half dozen
dunlin, a few sanderling and ruddy turnstones and 1 purple sandpiper. A large
flock of robins included 4 cedar waxwing and a few yellow-rumps.
Unfortunately, I also encountered a beached gray seal, which appeared to have
some blood on its chest. I called NY Marine Rescue Center, who said they would
check it out.

Yes, you will be ticketed if your car is there after 9:00.

I'm not familiar with this park or parking lot. There are many parks in the
New York metro area where you are supposed to be a town or county resident, but
if you arrive before a certain time, such as 8:00am, no one is there to stop
you from parking. No one checks you as you later drive out.

Is it different here? Will someone actually check later in the day that every
car has a sticker of some sort?

[nysbirds-l] Bank swallows near Georgica Pond

2020-05-22 Thread Jane Ross
An unexpected flock of bank swallows (probably about 80 judging from the 40
nest holes) has taken up residence along the ocean beach just east of Georgica
Pond (in newly carved out cliffs on the beach behind the Klein House on West
End Road. )
Hope we don’t have any storms or very high tides that could wipe them out. (
and that no homeowner tries to replace them with sand and vegetation )

[nysbirds-l] Snipes and an oriole in East Hampton

2020-01-24 Thread Jane Ross
We are enjoying some unprecedented views of 23 Wilson Snipe (snipes?) foraging
in Georgica Cove , along with one green winged teal, multiple hooded
mergansers, 4 killdeer and 150++ Canada Geese. Also present at our feeders is
a Baltimore Oriole. Nice birding for January at Cove Hollow Farm!
Thanks to Bruce Horwith for alerting us to the snipe!

[nysbirds-l] Fw: [eBird Alert] New York Rare Bird Alert

2020-01-04 Thread Jane Ross

I appreciate these ebird alerts...BUT should we assume that the list from
Ithaca was from a zoo of some sort?? kelp gull, fluttering shearwater, sacred
kingfisher, tui, variable oystercatcher..etc. really in New York State??? IF
so some of us should be making a bee-line up there, but I doubt it...

[nysbirds-l] White Pelican present Sunday morning

2019-01-13 Thread Jane Ross
Directly across from the dead end at Cove Road off Rose Hill Rd in WaterMill.
Sometimes obscured by many preening swans. Active hunters don’t seem to bother
them at the moment.
Many thanks to all who reported him yesterday!

[nysbirds-l] Mecox mudflats continue to delight!

2018-08-27 Thread Jane Ross
The extended mudflats at Mecox continue to provide outstanding opportunities to
see sandpipers and terns: this morning's sightings included nearly 300 common
terns, dozens of Forster's and least terns, sanderlings, semipalmated, white
rumped and least sandpipers, semipalmated and black bellied plovers (and a few
piping) at least 30 short-billed dowitchers, a stilt sandpiper, a ruddy
turnstone, a laughing gull, and the usual assortment of other gulls,
cormorants, swans, tree swallows and egrets.

At the moment best viewing is from the west side of the pond, which offers
access to the flats, but parking is limited to residents with permits from 9 am
to 6 pm.

Waiting for news from Sagg Pond to know when that will be open.

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Dead crow in East Hampton ?

An ailing crow has died in a friend’s yard and I confess that I’m not sure
what, if any, action should be taken. If it suffered an illness (west Nile? )
is it important to have it checked? It was one of 2 that seemed unwell this
morning. Not sure what became of the second one
Thanks for any advice,

is it important to have it checked? It was one of 2 that seemed unwell this

[nysbirds-l] East End birding over the weekend

2018-05-14 Thread Jane Ross
even though I missed the Kirtland's in Central Park, the East End provided
plenty to make up for it! Especially wonderful were great views of a mature
American Bald Eagle who sat cooperatively on a log on a sand spit in Mecox Bay
for about 30 minutes before providing exquisite views in flight circling the
Bay before heading north.

A pair of red knots were highlights at Sagg Pond (both Sagg and Mecox have
substantial mudflats at the moment, although Mecox is already closed to the
ocean.) Glossy ibis overhead at Dune Road/Tiana Beach and also flying over
downtown East Hampton Village.

Many other shorebirds were present at Sagg and also on mudflats at Acabonac
Harbor, including:

black bellied plover (magnificent in full breeding plumage)

dunlin (about 60 at Acabonac)

ruddy turnstones

willet

yellow-legs

snowy and great egrets

oyster catchers

black skimmers

least terns (many)

Forster's terns (a few)

sanderlings

semipalmated sandpipers

piping plovers

semi palmated plovers

On the downside: no hummingbirds yet, bluebirds have not shown up to take
residence (breaking a 7 year run) and purple martins are absent from their
usual gourd colony near Georgica Pond. perhaps all just late arrivals in this
cold, late spring?

Re: [nysbirds-l] Dune Road Skimmers

2017-06-02 Thread Jane Ross
Just counted 26 black skimmers on Dune Road, east of Tiana beach as reported
yesterday by a Paul Hagen (thanks, Paul!)
Also present, Royal terns, oyster catchers, least and common terns, Rudy
turnstones, willets and assorted peeps The beach area is roped off for nesting
birds, so scope highly recommended!

[nysbirds-l] Glossy Ibis flying over in East Hampton

2017-04-23 Thread Jane Ross
9:45 am Sunday: just saw 4 glossy ibis flying east over Georgica Cove. No
mudflats available for them unfortunately since Georgia Pond was not opened
this spring and water levels are high.

[nysbirds-l] Upland Sandpiper YES! Friday Update

2016-04-15 Thread Jane Ross
With thanks to everyone who helped me locate the Upland Sandpiper, I'm happy to
report it was clearly visible at 10 am in the open median just east of Oak
Beach and just west of a dirt road that crosses the median. Actually fairly
visible from either east or west bound Ocean parkway. Don't attempt to leave
your car! And use flashers for safety as lots of cars whizzing by!

[nysbirds-l] feral cat bill in Albany

2015-06-11 Thread Jane Ross
In addition to opposing this bill, it would be good to find a sympathetic state
legislator (or two) who could propose a bill that would make it possible for
feral cats to be taken to animal shelters. At the moment, cats fall in a grey
area in New York State where they cannot legally be "removed", and most animal
shelters or rescue organizations will not accept them because they cannot be
adopted. "Feral dogs" are of course removed to pounds where they are either
destroyed or put up for adoption, raccoon are destroyed, but cats are both
protected and abandoned under current state laws.

Jane F. Ross
---Forwarding for Gerry Rising:The
feral cat bill is to come up within hours. Please call Senate majority leader
John Flanagan at 518-455-2071 to oppose it. Just say you oppose Senate 1081. It
will take a few seconds to do this and opposing this bill is VERY important to
birds and other wildlife.Having never made such a call before, I was very
hesitant to do so myself, but I found it very simple. A young woman answered
and asked for my message. I said that I opposed Senate 1081. She thanked me and
promised to pass my message on to the senator. I thanked her and we hung up.
That was it.Numbers count in this world. Please help.Gerry

[nysbirds-l] blue winged teal, FOS barnswallows and chipping sparrows

2015-04-17 Thread Jane Ross
Beginning to look a lot more spring-like in East Hampton these days. Georgica
Cove has a pair of blue winged teal that seem to have arrived this morning,
multiple barn swallows and lots of female red-winged blackbirds, joining the
tree swallows and male red wings who arrived a few weeks ago. Chipping sparrow
have replaced the juncos, although a few white throated sparrows remain.

[nysbirds-l] East End sightings

2015-04-02 Thread Jane Ross
Hoping for another glimpse of the snowy owl that was still present near Lazy
Point last weekend, I found a FOS Eastern Willet instead. Time to move on from
wintering birds apparently! Other weekend highlights were at least four very
active male woodcocks at Poxabogue park last Sunday evening, and continuing
snipes, killdeer, great egrets, a few lingering Bonaparte's gulls and a flock
of 30 or so green winged teal on Georgica Cove. Osprey are also active over
Georgica.

[nysbirds-l] East End birding Monday

2015-03-16 Thread Jane Ross
Productive birding on the East End today starting with a dozen Wilson snipes
who flew into our front yard at Geogica Cove, joining some some 30 Green winged
teal, assorted mergansers, a group of about 16 Bonaparte's gulls who have been
here for several weeks, and 8 killdeer. Two FOS Osprey appeared around noon,
fish in hand/claw, making spring official.Other tour highlights: 3 red-necked
grebes at the Sagg Bridge, lots of whistling Black scoters at Montauk Point
(along with eider, and a few surf scoters) and three FOS American
Oystercatchers viewed from Lazy Point, where we also caught a (final?) distant
glimpse of the snowy owl still in residence on Hicks Island. Jane F. Ross

2014-12-01 Thread Jane Ross
Don't give up!, The website is working just fine, but it is overloaded, so
anyone who wants this great deal should just keep trying. And once you get in,
be sure to work fast, as it will time you out very quickly. I managed on the
10th try. All set with with 2 three--year passes. Camp Hero and Montauk Point,
here we come!
