Re: [nysbirds-l] Golden-crowned Sparrow

2019-01-16 Thread Jesse Jaycox
I returned at first light this morning and met two women who were already
there. Eventually, the golden-crowned sparrow showed and we all got to see it
well (my thanks to them for allowing me to look through their scope). I believe
it appeared around 7:45 AM or so. It disappeared at some point, perhaps in the
shrub adjacent to the deck. I left the site around 8:45 after not seeing it for
a bit, so not sure if it showed up again.

2019-01-15 Thread Jesse Jaycox
I was there on Sunday 1/13 from approximately 10:00 AM to 2:45 PM (I left the
location twice for short periods of time to take a break) and did not see the
bird, even though it had been there earlier in the morning. I’m also interested
in any recent sightings, as I may try one more time this week.

[nysbirds-l] Collared Greater Snow Goose at the Camel Farm, Orange County

2013-03-11 Thread Jesse Jaycox
While at the Camel Farm in Orange County on Saturday, March 9, I was fortunate
to view the Ross's goose in with the large flock of Snow Geese, as well as the
three Tundra Swans. One of the Snow Geese had a yellow neck collar with the
code "TC85" in black. I reported the code to the bird banding lab and received
the report on it today. I thought I'd pass on the information, as it might
interest others that also saw it. This particular bird, a female Greater Snow
Goose, was hatched in 2010 or earlier and banded in the south plain of Bylot
Island, Nunavut, Canada on 8/15/2011. Coordinates: Lat 73.13333, Lon -79.8

[nysbirds-l] 12/31/12 - Queensbury Pine Grosbeaks -YES; Northumberland Harlequin Duck - NO

2012-12-31 Thread Jesse Jaycox
A friend and I went to look for the pine grosbeaks in Queensbury today,
checking several of the areas where they had been reported, but came up empty
handed. We eventually found 17 PINE GROSBEAKS from a trail behind the
Adirondack Community College on Bay Road. An accipiter (looked to be a
sharp-shinned hawk) eventually flushed the birds to the west. We drove around
to the next road over in that direction (Meadowbrook Road) to see if we could
catch up with them again and saw several pine grosbeaks, many cedar waxwings
(plus one possible Bohemian waxwing), one bluebird, and multiple starlings in
three trees on Meadowbrook Road between the two ends of Waverly Place.

[nysbirds-l] Common Redpolls - Stephentown 12/27/12

2012-12-27 Thread Jesse Jaycox
Common redpolls continue at a friend's bird feeder in Stephentown, Rensselaer
County, NY. Two or three birds showed up a week or so ago and have increased in
number since then. Normally, the redpolls leave after their morning visit, but
during today's snowstorm, we counted at least 42 that remained the entire day.
Redpolls are the most abundant birds at the feeder here lately.

[nysbirds-l] Gulls at Hudson River in Beacon, NY

[nysbirds-l] Hudson River Birds - Lesser Scaup

2012-01-18 Thread Jesse Jaycox
1/18/2012 - From the Hudson River waterfront at Newburgh (near Renwick St.), I

gulls, several mallards, and several common mergansers. The mergansers were not
as plentiful as last week, when I had seen large rafts of them out on the
river. There was also a lone female lesser scaup present, not far from the
shore today. The scaup showed up three times while I was there, one time with

[nysbirds-l] Leucistic Red-tailed Hawk - Center Berlin - 4/2/11

2011-04-03 Thread Jesse Jaycox
I saw the leucistic red-tailed hawk twice on 4/2/11 in the same location I
observed it in on 3/26/11. Last week I noticed two dark lines at the center of
the tail feathers that I thought were the legs showing through while the bird
was in flight. This time I could clearly see that two central tail feathers are
red on an otherwise completely white bird with yellow legs. One tail feather
seems to be completely red, while the second appears to be only partially red,
unless perhaps it's a shorter feather.

I've heard from others that this bird has been seen in this location on other
dates as well.

[nysbirds-l] MISSISSIPPI KITE PAIR - Montgomery County, NY - 6/13/2010

2010-06-13 Thread Jesse Jaycox
After a few unsuccessful trips, I was able to see a pair of MISSISSIPPI KITES
today on Mapletown Road in the Town of Root, Montgomery County. I arrived
around 11:15AM and searched the area where the bird had been reported and, at
12:25PM, found a female kite perched in a dead tree across from mailbox #950.
At one point, I watched her dive from the tree and come back with what looked
to be a grasshopper and eat it from the perch. She then flew to two other
nearby trees before returning back to the tree I first observed her in. About
1:00PM, she started calling from the perch and then a male kite appeared and
landed on her back -- possible copulation! As I got my camera ready, the male
flew from the female and fortunately landed on a limb above her, allowing me to
get a single photo of the two birds before they both flew off. Five minutes
later at 1:05PM, I saw a single kite fly over Mapletown Road heading south.
Later in the day at 4:00PM, the male kite returned and I and a few other
birders watched him for a bit. He (and the birders) left shortly after, but he
soon reappeared and I watched him fly around and perch in several trees in the
same area before heading south across the road about 20-25 minutes later.

My photos of the two birds are at:

There are multiple pictures of the male and female at separate times and a
single photo of the pair together. The photos are in reverse chronological
order.
