[nysbirds-l] NYSOA shorebird Field Trip to Montezuma

2017-08-28 Thread Kathryn Schneider
About 30 birders participated in the New York State Ornithological
Association’s Sunday field trip at the Montezuma wetlands complex. The outing,
led by Kevin McGowan, capped off the NYSOA's shorebird weekend that included a
Saturday workshop at the Montezuma Audubon Center and dinner in Seneca Falls.
The field trip gave us a chance to practice using Kevin’s techniques and tips
for identifying these challenging birds. At Benning Marsh we had good views of
a single Pectoral Sandpiper with Semipalmated Sandpipers, Least Sandpipers,
Semipalmated Plovers, and Lesser Yellowlegs. At Knox-Marcellus we saw many of
the same birds but also added a Ruddy Turnstone, Stilt Sandpipers, White-rumped
Sandpiper, Greater Yellowlegs, Short-billed Dowitcher, and a juvenile Wilson’s
Phalarope that was a life bird for some of us. A young Sora also popped in and
out of the cattails. Many thanks to Kevin for a wonderfully informative and
helpful workshop and a terrific birding experience.

[nysbirds-l] American Pipit Germantown

2017-02-26 Thread Kathryn Schneider
Several weeks ago I signed up for the NYSOA Winter Waterfowl Weekend in Oswego
so I was thrilled to be able to see the Clark’s Grebe on both Saturday and
Sunday along with a bunch of other great birds. The weather was pretty brutal
so there was still some light left when we got home and we decided to try for
the Great Cormorants previously reported by others in Germantown. We found 2
still perched on the channel marker, another lifer for me. Bill spotted an
American Pipit foraging along the shoreline. There’s a lot of habitat on the
lawns above the river but the poor lone bird was foraging on the wrack line by
the boat launch. Pictures and list on eBird at

[nysbirds-l] Upcoming NYSOA program and field trip

2014-06-28 Thread Kathryn Schneider
The New York State Ornithological Association’s next field trip will feature a
tour of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History (www.rtpi.org) in
Jamestown, NY along with a field experience led by the Institute’s bird
experts. RTPI currently houses most of the late Roger Tory Peterson’s papers,
books, and art work. A field trip to nearby grassland habitat will search for
Henslow’s Sparrow as well as other grassland associated birds. The tour and
field trip are planned for Saturday, July 12, 2014. A presentation will be held
at the institute at 7 pm on Friday, July 11, 2014. During this presentation,
RTPI staff will overview the Institute’s holdings and purposes as well as
preview the field experience planned for Saturday morning.

Friday’s presentation is open to all who are interested. For a quality
experience, it is necessary to limit the RTPI tour and field trip to 25
participants; therefore first preference is given to those who are individual,
student, or family members of NYSOA or youth members (accompanied by a parent)
of the NYS Young Birders Club (NYSYBC). Those who are not in one of the above
categories may register for the RTPI tour and field trip and will be
accommodated should there be space available. For membership information,
please visit the NYSOA web site at www.nybirds.org or the NYSYBC web site at
www.nysyoungbirders.org.

Jamestown is located in southwestern New York State approximately 60 miles
south of Buffalo, NY off Interstate 86/Southern Tier Expressway. Visit RTPI's
contact page (http://rtpi.org/contact/) for our location and additional
information. There are several motels located within a few minutes of RTPI
including Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn, and Red Roof Inn. Preregistration is
required. For more information and to register, please contact Tim Baird via
e-mail at timbair...@gmail.com, or by phone at: 716-945-2539.

2012-07-10 Thread Kathryn Schneider
The New York State Ornithological Association (NYSOA) held a boreal bird
workshop and field trip this weekend in the Adirondacks. Wendy and Steve Hall
at the Adirondack Wildlife Refuge and Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington
hosted the workshop, given by John and Pat Thaxton. The Thaxtons showed slides
of a variety of boreal specialists, reviewed their field marks and
vocalizations, and discussed their distribution and status. They also
presented little known facts about their natural history. Special thanks to
Wendy and Steve for the surprise hors d'oeuvres.

On Sunday, the Thaxton team led a field trip to Whiteface Mountain, Bigelow
Road, Bloomingdale Road and Paul Smith’s. The weather was spectacular, the
bugs were few and the birding camaraderie was palpable. Seventeen birders from
all over New York State and two from Massachusetts participated in this event
and were rewarded with long looks at a very cooperative Bicknell’s Thrush that
sat on an exposed perch for several minutes near the hairpin turn on Whiteface.
Other noteworthy species from this tour of Adirondack birding hotspots
included: Osprey, Chimney Swift, Belted Kingfisher, Gray Jays with young at a
feeder, Common Raven, Brown Creeper, Winter Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglet,
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Swainson’s Thrush, Hermit Thrush, Blue-headed Vireo,
Nashville Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler,
Black-throated Green Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Swamp Sparrow, Lincoln’s
Sparrow, Dark-eyed Juncos with young. NYSOA would like to publicly thank the
Thaxtons for sharing their time and expertise and for making this exciting trip
possible.
