Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose at Orchard Beach
I would like to know if the Bernacle Goose has been seen today (Sunday, November 28) ? We went to Orchard Beach yesterday (from 12:00 to 3:00PM) but we could not locate the bird among the several groups of Canada Geese that were on the grass areas near the main parking (first road to the right before the main entrance). Thanks for any update, FP On Nov 27, 2010, at 10:23 AM, dri...@yahoo.com wrote: > The Barnacle Goose was relocated at 10AM on the grass to the right on the > parking lot at Orchard Beach . Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose at Orchard Beach, NYC appears injured
Wow, Shari Zirlin just forwarded me a picture of the Orchard Beach Barnacle Goose and the white white band on the injured left leg does indeed appear to be a darvic ring/band (vertical 3 letter code VUB [or possibly 8]!! Also evident in the photo, and mentioned in a separate email from Mark Barriger, the bird has a metal band and a small white band on its right leg. This format is reminiscent of a scheme being used by David Cabot and Steve Percival in Ireland to mark wintering Barnacles from the Greenland population. If correct, this is a outstanding result. Next question, does the metal band have numbers or other writing on it? If so, it might be possible to read them by telescope. -- Angus Wilson New York City & The Springs, NY, USA http://birdingtotheend.blogspot.com/ -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose at Orchard Beach, NYC appears injured
Naturally, it is troubling to hear that the bird is in distress, with the leg band as the possible culprit. However, I'm very intrigued by the details of the band. Does anyone have photos that show it? Do the letters read up (or down) the leg or around it? Barnacle Geese are seen annually in our region but the origins of these birds remains a topic of healthy debate. The discovery of banded birds provides a rare opportunity to supplement speculation with fact. With this in mind, it's important to establish the type of band that has been used on the Orchard Beach bird. Is it a type used by waterfowl collections/breeders or an engraved plastic 'darvic' band of the type used by several banding (ringing) projects studying the wild and feral populations in Europe? A good number of the Greenland and Svalbard nesting populations have been marked with darvic rings/bands allowing researchers to map out the migration routes and determine other statistics relevant to their population biology (e.g. lifespan). Systematic marking of the Svalbard population began back in 1970. What I don't know yet is whether these 'color-banded' birds carry a conventional metal band as well. A description of the Svalbard color scheme can be found here: http://www.ssf.npolar.no/documents/Observations/Barnacle_goose_leg_rings.pdf -- Angus Wilson New York City & The Springs, NY, USA http://birdingtotheend.blogspot.com/ -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[nysbirds-l] Barnacle Goose at Orchard Beach, NYC appears injured
The Barnacle Goose was relocated at 10AM on the grass to the right on the parking lot at Orchard Beach . The goose is banded. It is a white band with black letters VUB. The band appears to have slipped down over the birds foot. The bird is limping and doesn't or can't put its foot down Shari Zirlin Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone with SprintSpeed -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/nysbirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
