[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull, Central Park NYC (late-day find), Friday, 12/30

2022-12-31 Thread Tom Fiore
Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City - The Central Park reservoir
[Late-day] - Friday, December 30th:

A BLACK-HEADED Gull came in to settle on the north building of the reservoir’s
north shoreline (having flown in there from…?) later in the day, when J. Shum
was acknowledged as having pointed to it - and ‘exclaiming’! This then gives a
minimum of 5 species of gulls present at that reservoir on Friday. The rarer
gull was seen by multiple others who were there later on, and in the vicinity.
The Iceland Gull there was also still around to fairly late in the day on 12/30.

…
On a minor corrective/adddition, a Palm Warbler had in fact been seen (a
possible re-find of a long-thought-gone bird), at Randall’s Island in N.Y.
County, by Tuesday, 12/27, and this may be the individual subsequently seen
there on into 12/30.

good birding,

Tom Fiore

[nysbirds-l] Black headed gull, Jones beach, Nassau county ,yes

2022-01-06 Thread kevin rogers
The bird will sometimes fly back in the direction towards the sandspit at Short
Beach but I saw several times it would turn around and head back towards the
bridge area described in my earlier post.. It seems very reliable just like in
past years with the same species here that it doesn't sit far from the shore...
it loafs about and will sometimes fly up a little jump to maybe grab a fish or
something ..but its pretty loyal to the area ...Also waterproof boots are a
very good idea ...there is a spot or two that would require a bit of a jump if
you didn't have waterproof shoes but if you do have them it's not a problem..
good luck!! Kev

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull, Gr. W.-fr. Goose, etc. Randall's Island, NYC 12/31

2020-12-31 Thread Thomas Fiore
Thursday, Dec. 31st - Randall’s Island (a part of N.Y. County, in N.Y. City)

A Black-headed Gull appeared in the afternoon on Randall’s Island, first noted
by M.B. Kooper, at Field 25, where it was associating with some Ring-billed &
Herring Gulls, before moving off to a ‘point unknown’. However there is a
chance the rarer gull may return as sometimes happens with this species. This
has been a gull species that has appeared in N.Y. County intermittently over
the years (including in & next to Manhattan, & in Central Park), but is perhaps
a 1st-ever for Randall’s Island. Total gull numbers in the reports from
several observers were not especially high. Congrat’s to Mary Beth, and thanks
to all reporting these birds.

Additionally, the Greater White-fronted Goose that’s been mostly-regular since
first found on Dec. 20th at Randall’s Island was again [re]-found there,
associating with a modest sized flock of Canada Geese. Also of interest
locally is the Lesser Scaup hen that’s been semi-regular off Randall’s, often
pretty much on its own, sometimes with other waterfowl.

...
In keeping with the B.-h. Gull sighting, I also scrutinized gulls on the
Central Park reservoir, as well as a bit of the Hudson river in an
'adacent-latitude' sector, but with just the 3 most-regular winter gulls of the
N.Y. City area seen. A nice number of Hooded Mergansers in Central Park,
taking in the Meer, Reservoir, Lake, & Turtle Pond, for at least 4 locations.

(apologies if this gets posted more than once.)

..
& good gulling-&-goosing for 2021,

Tom Fiore

RE: [nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull, Conscience Bay, Old Field

2018-11-19 Thread Shaibal Mitra
It's amazing to get these insights into the lives of individual wild birds.
This example reminds me of an even longer run, by the Lesser Black-backed Gull
that returned this fall for its 16th winter at Ninigret Pond, Rhode Island.
That bird was also an adult when first found and is therefore at least 19 years
old (maybe Steve will give me a break here and desist from publicly questioning
my infatuation with this particular individual!).

But seriously, the lives of these two birds have spanned a period in which the
overall statuses of their respective species in our region have changed in
fascinating ways. When the Ninigret Pond Lesser Black-backed Gull was first
found, this species was known to us mostly as a rare to scarce winter resident,
with long-lived, territorial adults accounting for a large proportion of all
observations of the species in our area (many readers undoubtedly remember
Lester from Shinnecock Inlet, Larry from Napeague, and Lizaveta from Navy Road,
Montauk). Sixteen years later, over-wintering birds are only slightly more
numerous than they were then, but passage migrants and over-summering immatures
have increased exponentially in abundance. Meanwhile, Black-headed Gulls seem
to have become scarcer, possibly because the Bonaparte's Gull flocks in which
many used to be embedded have themselves diminished.

It must be at least ten years ago that Doug Futuyma (I think), Peter Scully (I
think) and I first found what must be the same individual on the Smithtown
Christmas Bird Count. My earliest record in e-bird was from 27 Dec 2008, but I
have only submitted but small fraction of my records to e-bird, so I am not
sure that was the earliest date. When first found, the bird was already in
adult plumage, so if my assumption is correct, this individual is at least 12
years old. Mt memory also says we first found it in nearby Flax Pond.

Hi all,

my yard, and unfortunately there isn't anywhere for the public to park along
that part of Old Field Road, though you can park at Kaltenborn Commons

and walk north along the road. The bay is visible at several points from the
road. Given that the bird seemed willing to move around, it might be worth
keeping an eye on Old Field Point and Frank Melville Park, if it can't be found
on the bay. I wonder if this might be one of the same birds that was found
along that stretch of the North Shore last winter as well...?

earlier in the summer was there as well, pretending to be rocks :-)

Re: [nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull, Conscience Bay, Old Field

2018-11-19 Thread Hugh McGuinness
It must be at least ten years ago that Doug Futuyma (I think), Peter Scully
(I think) and I first found what must be the same individual on the
Smithtown Christmas Bird Count. My earliest record in e-bird was from 27
Dec 2008, but I have only submitted but small fraction of my records to
e-bird, so I am not sure that was the earliest date. When first found, the
bird was already in adult plumage, so if my assumption is correct, this
individual is at least 12 years old. Mt memory also says we first found it
in nearby Flax Pond.

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull, Conscience Bay, Old Field

2018-11-19 Thread Michael Schrimpf
Hi all,

This morning I found a Black-headed Gull on Conscience Bay, in Old Field
(Setauket). It's a non-breeding adult, and was sticking close to the west
side of the bay, occasionally flying among the groups of ducks. I was
observing from my yard, and unfortunately there isn't anywhere for the
public to park along that part of Old Field Road, though you can park at
Kaltenborn Commons (here
)
and walk north along the road. The bay is visible at several points from
the road. Given that the bird seemed willing to move around, it might be
worth keeping an eye on Old Field Point and Frank Melville Park, if it
can't be found on the bay. I wonder if this might be one of the same birds
that was found along that stretch of the North Shore last winter as well...?

Here is my eBird checklist, with fairly distant photo of the bird:

I observed and photographed a black-headed gull at Veterans Memorial Pier
this afternoon. I’ll upload photos to eBird later. It flew off about 30
minutes ago and has not returned. I haven’t found anything i’d Be
comfortable calling a Mew Gull.

Re: [nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull Pelham Bay Park Bronx

2017-11-04 Thread Andrew Baksh
Posting again since the bird was flushed by off leashed dogs and went missing
for a bit. I relocated it in the Lagoon. It has since frequented the parking
lot but keeps moving around due to the increased weekend vehicular traffic.
Last observed sleeping in the Orchard Beach parking lot.

Also of note for the Bronx. I had a sitting Bonaparte's Gull on the beach
earlier. Usually, the few I have seen here were all flybys.

Additionally, Steve Walter showed me a photo of a Gull he photographed in the
lot this AM. From the camera screen this bird looked like something between a 1
CY Ring-billed and Laughing Gull. I did not spend any length of time on
studying the photo but imagine if it turns out to be a Franklin's Gull. I
expect Steve will review his photos and provide an update later.

I kept an eye out for Steve's bird but never connected with it. Birders
twitching the Black-headed Gull or just in the area should keep a lookout for
Steve's bird.

Cheers,

and Deborah Allen found a Black-headed Gull this AM at Pelham Bay. I think was
near the Lagoon area.

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull - Sagg Main Beach (Suffolk)

2017-04-05 Thread Derek Rogers
At around noon, there was an immature Black-headed Gull roosting on the pond
flats at Sagg Main Beach in Southampton. I viewed the bird for about 30 minutes
as it preened and fed within a tight flock of Ring-billed Gulls. The bird took
to the north circling at an extremely high altitude to the point where it was a
mere speck in the sky only to reappear on the flats moments later.

Also of note were 3 gorgeous adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls.

Best,
Derek Rogers

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull in Westchester

2016-01-27 Thread Gail Benson
This is posted on behalf of Tom Burke:

On Tuesday afternoon during a Waterfowl Count wrap-up, an adult
Black-headed Gull was seen around Five Islands Park in New Rochelle, West.
Co. This is presumably the same bird reported once this year on Jan. 2 (by
Jim Coe, also the original finder in 2014) at nearby Premium Mill Pond in
Larchmont and also present at both locations back in late November to
mid-December 2014, then as an immature bird. Five Islands Park is accessed
from Route 1 in eastern New Rochelle by taking Le Fevres Lane just west of
Salesian High School. The Black-headed spends much of its time around the
tanks at the Water Treatment Plant on the right as you progress down Le
Fevres Lane, often settling into the tanks with accompanying Ring-billed
Gulls. Also check the islands in the harbor, where the gulls sometimes
roost.

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull at Premium Mill Pond, Larchmont (Westchester County)

2016-01-03 Thread James Coe
I posted the sighting down below on Nov 30, 2014. Again yesterday, Jan 2,
2016, I saw a Black-headed Gull at the same location.

Yesterday's bird was in adult basic plumage - and I am intrigued that it may
be the same individual that was seen last winter as an immature along the
shore of northern New Rochelle and Larchmont at the Premium Mill Pond.

The gull was seen (and photographed) swimming in the back left corner of
the Mill Pond -(if you are looking from Red Bridge on Pryer Manor Road) -
at around 3:30 PM yesterday.

Nothing else remarkable was spotted on the water. There were about 15
Hooded Mergansers, a few American Wigeon, a pair of Mute Swans, and a few
dozen Mallards and Canada Geese.

Subject: Black-headed Gull at Premium Mill Pond, Larchmont (Westchester

On an otherwise lackluster and rather routine afternoon of birding the
Premium Mill Pond and Larchmont shoreline, I found one immature Black-headed
Gull wading along the shore of the Mill Pond at low tide, with a Ring-bill.

I was just visiting the area for the holiday, but I grew up nearby, and have
birded the Premium Mill Pond area consistently for more than 40 years. This
was the very first Black-headed Gull I've seen in Larchmont.

Re:[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull in Brooklyn

2015-11-21 Thread Rob Jett
Thanks to Dennis for the heads up. Heydi Lopes and I relocated the gull at
around 9:45am within the flocks of Bonaparte's Gulls. They were all feeding
just offshore in Gravesend Bay between Coney Island Creek Park and Norton
Point. The black-headed disappeared for a bit but returned at around 10:20am.
The close to shore feeding frenzy this morning was compliments of schools of
bunker moving through the area. It also brought in larger than usual numbers of
fisherman at the normally deserted spot.

Good birding,

Rob

[nysbirds-l] Black - headed Gull still at New Rochelle

2014-12-07 Thread amynewyork
The Black - headed Gull was still there today as of 2:30 pm.   I saw it with
Ring-billed Gulls sitting on a dock at the end of two parallel ramps extending
into the water from the shore, south of the water treatment plant, which is
southwest of the Five Islands Park parking lot. Much smaller than Ringed-bills.
Adult bird. We used scope (recommended) and were able to clearly see red at the
base of the bill. Also saw the reddish legs once the bird finally stood for a
few minutes.

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull at Premium Mill Pond, Larchmont (Westchester County)

2014-11-29 Thread James Coe
On an otherwise lackluster and rather routine afternoon of birding the
Premium Mill Pond and Larchmont shoreline, I found one immature Black-headed
Gull wading along the shore of the Mill Pond at low tide, with a Ring-bill.

I was just visiting the area for the holiday, but I grew up nearby, and have
birded the Premium Mill Pond area consistently for more than 40 years. This
was the very first Black-headed Gull I've seen in Larchmont.

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull at Shinnecock Inlet (Suffolk Co.)

2014-01-30 Thread Ken Feustel
A first winter Black-headed Gull spent the better part of the morning feeding
just west of the west jetty at Shinnecock Inlet (photo on my flickr site).
Other birds present were Iceland Gull (2), and King Eider (3). West of the
Ponquogue Bridge a Clapper Rail was feeding in one of the few unfrozen ditches.
A Nelson’s Sparrow showed briefly in the marsh just west of Triton Lane.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull in Queens - NO

2014-01-17 Thread Steve Walter
Looked for by several people today, but not seen. Hundreds of Ring-billed
Gulls in the area, so there seems to be an attraction that could lead to the
Black-headed Gull showing up again. The most interesting bird seen was a
Boat-tailed Grackle along the Little Neck Bay shore. Not really a surprise,
although a fairly new species to northern Queens. I was aware of a few
residing in the same marsh where Luke reported the Snowy Owl (which is now
at Fort Totten and, believe it or not, was scoped by Eric Miller and Corey
Finger from the ridiculous distance that we were from it). If you happen to
be there with a camera, keep an eye out for a male Hooded Merganser hanging
right up along the shore.

Stephane Perrault found a BLACK-HEADED GULL on Little Neck Bay, Queens about
3:00 this afternoon. This was his report to the local group:

"Currently viewed 30 yards from walkway. First open space N of N boulevard.

Park At alley pond environmental center. Take bicycle path N along
cross-island parkway (east side of pkway). Head N past the saltmarsh, past
the train tracks (under viaduct), past the row of phragmites, past the row
of trees, first open space. On " beach" at receding tide. Not that far to
walk."

By the time I got there, the tide was lower and gulls were stretched out
over a long amount of shoreline, all the way to the mouth of Alley Creek. I
did not see it. I'll offer another recommendation if you want to look for
it. You can park by Crocheron Pond, at the end of 35th Avenue and walk over
the overpass. Walk south. From this approach, you can begin looking at birds
immediately, and it might be a shorter walk to the spot Stephane indicated.
If the tide is too high for gulls on the shoreline, there are a couple of
other places worth a look. Oakland Lake always has Ring-billed Gulls and the
Bayside Marina should have roosting gulls. I actually looked there
yesterday, not knowing a Black-headed was in the area. I had stopped off
there to scan for the Fort Totten Snowy Owl. It was indeed visible on a
light pole on the fort, a half mile away. Credit to Eric Miller for tipping
me off on that (he saw it while driving on the Cross Island). It seems that
you can drive into the fort these days, if you want a closer look. The
Snowy has been sitting on light poles, roofs, and chimneys (toward the
southwest part of the fort), so not really susceptible to disturbance - so
no harm divulging its itinerary. Stephane, in fact, found the Black-headed
on his way back from the Snowy. Sort of that Patagonia thing.

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull and Bonaparte's Spectacle - Rich Marine Buffalo

2013-01-04 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Around 3:30 this afternoon I found one of the adult BLACK-HEADED GULLS that
occasionally have been seen on the Niagara River in Buffalo the past couple
of months. Jim Pawlicki has documented the presence of two different adults
- one with a dark bill and one with a bright bill. The one I saw had a
bright orangey red bill. It was on the water in the Black Rock Canal very
close to the Rich Marine building.

There were high winds all day in Buffalo and, as a result, the number of
BONAPARTE'S GULLS in this area was astounding - I estimated 15 to 20,000.
They really are quite a spectacle - one that I never tire of seeing. Many
were feeding and many were sitting on the water. I worked until my fingers
were frozen but the only different small gull I could find was the single
Black-headed. Little Gulls have been exceptionally scarce on the river this
season.

Good birding!

The previously reported Black-headed Gull was feeding at 9:30 this morning,
at very low tide, in the tidal creek that drains the Setauket Mill Pond
north into Conscience Bay. Best viewing was from the trail that parallels
the creek in the Frank Melville Memorial Park, north of the Mill Pond.

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] BLACK HEADED GULL SETAUKET

2012-12-12 Thread Derek Rogers
As of late this afternoon, the Black-headed Gull continues to be seen north of
the dam at Mill Pond in Setauket. The bird stayed north of the tidal creek,
picking about the benthos with a group of mallards. It would occasionally lift
off and circle the area sometimes leaving sight, but would always faithfully
return to its feeding area with the mallards.

This seems to be the favored spot for a lower tide. See earlier post, below,
from Mike Scheibel for a potential alternate location on Little Bay.

Best,
Derek Rogers

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull: East Hampton

2012-11-08 Thread Peter Max Polshek
Folks:

I observed a 1st winter Black-headed Gull at Hook Pond in East Hampton.

It was located on the section of the golf course at the northern
shore of the eastern end of Hook Pond. It was sitting among
Ring-billed, Herring and Laughing Gulls. This location is visible
from Dunemere Lane (west of the bridge).

[nysbirds-l] Black-headed Gull at Randalls Island

2012-09-22 Thread Alan Drogin
Biked to Randalls Island, not much activity until I reached the north side,
across from New York Post building. A couple of Ring-billed Gulls and a
half-dozen Laughing Gulls. In the group was I believe a Black-headed Gull.
First time ID for me - about same size as Laughing Gulls, much paler, bright
red legs, ear-spot, and a red bill with black tip (definitely not a Bonapartes
Gull). Did not get to see fly.

Happy Birding,
Alan Drogin

[nysbirds-l] Black Headed Gull at Riis Park, Rockaways

2011-11-26 Thread Richard Fleming
After failing to locate the Ross' Goose at Floyd Bennett Field this morning
(11/26), I cycled across the bridge to Riis park, where I found an adult
winter plumaged Black Headed Gull standing on the beach within the half
circle formed by the promenade at the western end of the park, along with
some 150 Ring Billed Gulls. Many Red Throated Loons and parties of Common
Eider were just offshore. (About 25 Horned Larks were at Floyd Bennett
field, in the grassy area to the north of the astroturf soccer pitches).
