[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite (Staten Island - Richmond Co.)

2022-04-21 Thread Shanley III, Michael
A colleague and I were standing at front entrance of Staten Island Academy on
Todt Hill waiting to go into a meeting. The kite flew over our heads heading
southeast to northwest! Unmistakeable large slender raptor with deep forked
tail. Last seen heading towards Richmond Co CC golf course/High Rock Park.
Moses Mountain might be a good place to check.

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite - Woodbury

2021-07-25 Thread Michael Z
Hello all,
Robert Taylor just spotted a Swallow-tailed Kite on South Woods Road just
north of Butera's Restaurant in Woodbury, NY (Nassau County). The bird
seemed to be flying north, but it flew over the tree line and out of our
site. Went to Stillwell Woods to try and relocate but no luck. But if you
are in the area of the spoonbill, keep your eyes open.

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite eBird stakeout hotspots

2020-08-10 Thread Greg Lawrence
Hello all,

There are now stakeout hotspots in eBird for the Swallow-tailed Kites in
Hamlin/Kendall, NY. Please keep in mind these birds have been right on the
county line, so use the appropriate hotspots when you go to see the birds (or
both-nice to get two county ticks at once)! If you’ve already seen these birds,
please merge your personal locations (unless they are far from the hotspots, as
we know these birds have moved around a bit) with these hotspots.

Hotspots are:

Orleans: ebird.org/hotspot/L12045448

Monroe: ebird.org/hotspot/L12045445

To merge your personal location with the hotspot, follow the instructions below
(or at this link:
https://support.ebird.org/en/support/solutions/articles/48000850891-choosing-and-managing-locations-in-ebird#anchorMergeLocation
 )

Go to Manage My Locations from My eBird
Use the Search bar to find the personal location you wish to merge (i.e., the
location you are sending checklists away from)
Click "Edit"
Select the circle next to "Merge". The map will display:
nearby personal locations (blue icons)
nearby public Hotspots (red icons with flames)
the location to be merged with another (green icon)
the number of checklists currently assigned to the green location (shown above
the "Merge" button)
Click the blue personal location or red Hotspot you want the green personal
location to be merged into.
The name of the personal location or Hotspot selected to receive the green
location's checklists will be shown in bold above the "Merge" button.
The "Delete after merging" box should be:
Checked if you want to delete the green location from your personal locations
after moving its checklists to the selected blue or red location
Unchecked if you want to keep the green location after moving all of its
checklists to the selected blue or red location (effectively making the green
location an "empty" personal location with no associated checklists)
Click "Merge" to re-assign all checklists from the green location to the
selected blue personal location or red Hotspot.
A pop-up will ask "Are you sure?" click Yes to continue. Remember, this action
cannot be undone!
If the merge was successful, you will see a page that says "Location has been
merged successfully." with an option to search for and edit other personal
locations.

Accurately representing where you went birding is critically important.
Misplaced locations can result in birds being 'seen' where nobody will find
them, or direct conservationists to prioritize work in places where that bird
has never occurred. eBird Science relies on accurately placed observations for
output like our Status & Trends maps. If the locations underlying these
scientific products are unreliable, then results may be unreliable as well.

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite in Yonkers

2015-05-11 Thread Andrew Block
At 1:05pm today I had a Swallow-tailed Kite flying south along the Hudson River
low over the trees and field at the Untermyer Park in Yonkers off Broadway.
It's amazing that after wondering for so long if I would get a kite in NY and
thinking about it yesterday that I would see one today while at work.  How
amazing!!  I love these birds.

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite - almost NY

2015-04-11 Thread Steve Walter
Today's weather forecast didn't seem like a good prescription for a pelagic
trip -but it was perfect for hawk watching, especially after four days of
overcast and east winds. So I decided I'd deal with some of my least
favorite roads in the world and go to Sandy Hook (NJ) for the first time in
a few years. It paid off with over 300 hawks, highlighted by (finally) my
first Swallow-tailed Kite in the north. It's not quite New York, but as it
didn't come back south like some water crossing fearing hawks, it's almost a
certainty that it crossed over into New York (I was thinking that observers
in Central Park should be on the lookout). I won't be posting a picture, as
I didn't get the best angle and distance on it (I have lots of pictures from
the south, so I'm not fretting over that). I couldn't help but think that
had it been three years ago, I might have been sitting on a boardwalk right
under the kite, but Sandy happened and I had to pick a different spot (which
was still well positioned for many of the falcons).

The rest of the flight included 208 American Kestrels, 55 Merlins, 34
Ospreys, and smaller numbers of Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture, Northern
Harrier, Bald Eagle, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper's Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk,
Red-tailed Hawk, and Peregrine Falcon - a very nice variety, with hawks
passing with a frequency near that of Caracara updates. There was also a
constant flow of swallows through the day, with Trees well outnumbering Barn
and Rough-winged. A few Fish Crows appeared to be in migration and a few
flocks of Cedar Waxwings were earlier than I've come to expect of them in
spring. Overall, just nice to watch birds actually on the move north. I took
a peak at the ocean at the end of the day, and saw a spectacle of thousands
of ducks. In order of abundance, Black Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Surf
Scoter, Greater Scaup, and White-winged Scoter - more birds poised to
imminently migrate through New York.

On the way back, I stopped off at Gravesend Bay (and many other points right
on the Belt Parkway) and quickly found the continuing Glaucous Gull flying
around.

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite over Prospect Park

2014-04-14 Thread Rob Bate
Word was related by Gus Keri that a somewhat mysterious woman on a bike saw
a Swallow-tailed Kite over Prospect Park. She evidently had a picture and
he also thought it was indeed a Swallow-tail. Twitter went mad and all
eyes were skyward but with no luck relocating the fast moving bird.

Gus had told her to post it through the Brooklyn BIrd Club page which
thankfully she did. Many thanks to Jennifer Keplar for her great find and
her follow through with the picture. Here's a link to her blog.

Stay tuned to see if this is some kind of record for Brooklyn.

2013-05-11 Thread Corey Finger
Are you saying you saw it again today? If so, where, exactly? This is a bird
that pretty much every New York State birder would want to see. Please provide
some details.

Good Birding,

2013-05-11 Thread Cesar Castillo
not sure what happened, appears as though I accidentally sent out another email
by accident, was supposed to be a deleted draft.  I have not seen a kite today.
Photos were part of yesterday's report that I sent out today.

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite heading to NYC?

2012-04-17 Thread Gabrielwillow
My friend Derek Lovitch (author of the recently published "How To Be A Better
Birder") called me just now from the Sandy Hook Hawk-watch, where he just
spotted a northbound Swallow-tailed Kite! This was at 11:20 AM. So keep your
eyes peeled at Breezy Point, Staten Island, etc. It could be heading our way...

Good luck,

Gabriel Willow

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite going N. from Sandy Hook N.J. 4/6

2010-04-07 Thread Tom Fiore
On Tuesday afternoon, (6 April, 2010) John van Dort, the official
counter at the Sandy Hook (New Jersey) hawk-watch observed &
photographed a Swallow-tailed Kite, which was seen flying north in the
direction of Coney Island at about 1:25 p.m. (The kite could have
moved on to New England on Tuesday's winds and warmth yet it also
could be on or over Long Island or elsewhere in NY today) so -
keep an "eye to the sky". For those who don't immediately recognize
"Coney Island" that's as in Brooklyn, New York, as in western Long
Island, NY.

http://www.hawkcount.org/day_summary.php?rsite=340=Go+to+site
should get one to a report if looked at during the day today (Wed.),
after that try http://www.hawkcount.org/month_summary.php (and select
Sandy Hook Migration Watch, see April 6)

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-tailed Kite, Sussex NJ 8/31/09

2009-08-31 Thread Christine Guarino
I went to see the Swallow-tailed Kite at the Wallkill NWR Headquarters
today and was not disappointed. I arrived before 9 and the bird was
easily seen perched across the field/valley from the bench on the
North Loop trail. If you continue past this bench and down the hill
you can get a better vantage of the whole valley that the bird seems
to spend much of its time in. The kite started to fly around as the
temps climbed and flew directly over us at one point. Awesome bird!

[nysbirds-l] Swallow-Tailed Kite

2009-08-30 Thread Jim Clinton
August 30th Sunday
Yes the Kite is still around. From what I understand it spent 3hrs flying over
the fields for all to enjoy from about 10 to 1. Of course I did not get there
until just after 1. 2hrs later it made its appearance once again to my
delight! I was just starting out figuring I had missed the bird and I spotted
it in the distance making its way back to the field it was seen at earlier.
Wow what a bird!!! This is what birding is all about, seeing such an amazing
bird in the wilds of NJ ;) and not on National Geographic in some far away
country.
