[nysbirds-l] Ruff Stuff

2012-07-15 Thread Steve Walter
Shouldn't the female be called a "Smooth"? Never mind. This is about the
roving, rufous Ruff dubbed "Rofous". Of course that was someone's typo, but
I like it and I'm going with it. Anyway, this is how he's looking these days
(yesterday) -- http://www.stevewalternature.com/ at the birds, recent work
link. The picture was taken from about 100 yards away, the closest one can
seem to get to it. Not bad considering that, and probably a better look than
I've gotten live (even with a scope).

[nysbirds-l] Ruff displaying

2013-04-19 Thread syschiff
Timber point east marina 19 April

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) found the 2 Ruffs together this morning (thanks
Andrew for getting the word out after being alerted). The obvious male is
molting into breeding plumage. Today there is much more black than in photos
posted earlier. In addition, the bird is developing a ruff. This was quite
evident when approached by the second bird. At that point, it put on a full
display posture, bending down, fluffing up its feathers and showing ear flaps
The barring was exceptionally noticeable and some reddish feathering was
displayed in the back as the feathers went up. The breast ruff is not yet
fully developed. None of this showed when the bird was feeding.

The second bird does not appear to be a juvenile. It displays barred tertials,
I believe a sign of maturity. . Could not find it much smaller than the male.
Best judgment is a female, not yet in full breeding plumage

I could not find any reference in the literature I have that the "breeding
display" is is an aggression posture. So, both Joe and I find this extremely
interesting as to how it reacted to an approaching "female". I have lots of
very poor distant photos, but lucked out on one picture of the display.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff update

2013-07-19 Thread Isaac Grant
All of the birds on the north end of the pond flushed at around 4:45. I was not
able to refind the bird but I am sure it is still here. Andrew first had the
bird on the south end of the pond so you need to check everywhere.

The numbers of Stilt Sandpipers is up by a lot saw 20+ birds
Semi-palmated Plovers are now in. Over 100 seen
2 pectoral sandpipers
1 Red Knot
1 adult Western Sandpiper still in pretty good plumage
A couple thousand semi-palmated sandpipers and 1,000 + Short-billed Dowitchers
Lots of yellowlegs of both types, Leasts

Not seen were the white rump or long-billed dowitcher I had on Wednesday

Too bad. As I noted before, that Ruff is extremely jumpy and once you see that
bird, it is highly advisable to observe from a distance unless you have Ninja

Looking at one of the Ruff right now from a spit just south of the North Island
on the north end of the East Pond. Entered via the northwest corner and worked
our way just a few hundred yards down and there he was, right across the water.

Also nice are a few Gull-billed Terns flying around.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff @ JBWR 3:00

2016-06-25 Thread Tim Healy
The Ruff was still visible from the Big John's overlook, well south of the
Raunt on the east side 10 mins ago. It was moving south at a very fast pace
initially, but it has slowed to forage on a mudflat just before the cove bends
out of view. I imagine the south end would supply good views as well, but one
should take care not to step out and disturb the bird from the southern
shoreline. In the process of sending this email, the bird took off and looked
to be headed north, somewhat towards the bay. Not currently in view.

Really handsome individual! Rufous with a somewhat darker neck ruff. Thanks to
all who update on the whereabouts and comings and goings of the bird.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff update from JBWR...

2012-07-04 Thread Andrew Baksh
The second Ruff that was discovered this morning has not been seen for well
over an hour. Last observed with Tom Burke, Gail Benson and Doug Futumya on
the Southend of the East Pond.

We think it could have flown off the pond...perhaps into the bay. The initial
Ruff from Sunday is still on the pond being seen on the eastern side from the
North End past 'Dead Man's Cove' or 'Mud Cove' as named on NYC Audubon's East
Pond map referenced in another post by Lynn Hertzog.
Good and responsible birding!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Jamaica Bay

2012-07-06 Thread Isaac Grant
The second Ruff that was found on Wednesday showed well at the north end of the
east pond. It was there from 2:00-5:00pm and was still there when I left. It
wandered around a lot and ranged from right at the entrance at the north west
part of the pond to the island and as far south as about half way to the raunt
and on the east part of the pond.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Heckscher SP Suffolk

2018-05-23 Thread Steve Walter
For those who might be interested, I've posted a picture of the Ruff at my
web site http://stevewalternature.com/ . Pictures taken from my old ride.
And from what I saw, that's the way to do it. Trying to walk toward it is
not advisable. And staking it out at the field 7 pools seems like the best
approach to seeing it.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff, Shorebird Locations - Niagara County

2022-05-03 Thread Willie D'Anna
The spectacular breeding plumaged RUFF, found by Joel Strong on Saturday,
continues today. The location is on Townline Rd, between Hosmer and Hartland
Rds, in the Town of Somerset. There are lots of other shorebirds here as
well. Mostly yellowlegs (things have just switched with Lesser now more
numerous than Greater) and some Solitary Sandpipers and Dunlin. Today, I had
a Pectoral Sandpiper and a Spotted Sandpiper.

There are a few other places in the county to look for shorebird
enthusiasts:

-North side of Drake Settlement Rd, between Fuller and Hess Rds,
Town of Newfane. Today, there were both yellowlegs, Solitarys, and Dunlin.

-West side of Quaker Rd (State Route 148), between Rt 104 and
Chapman Rd. Today, there were both yellowlegs, Solitarys, Green-winged and
Blue-winged Teal, Pintail, and Mallard.

-East side of Niagara-Orleans Countyline Rd (S.R. 269), ¼ mile south
of Yates Center Rd, Town of Yates, Orleans Co. Today, this spot held the
most individuals, with 94 Lesser Yellowlegs and 9 Greaters. There were also
Solitarys, Dunlin, and Spotted. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (another of
Joel’s finds) continues with the Canada Geese here.

Shorebird locations are worth checking often, with changeover evident almost
every day.

Good birding!

Willie

[nysbirds-l] Ruff Update, JBWR, July 4th

2012-07-04 Thread Donna Schulman
When I left the East Pond, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at 7:45pm, the Ruff
was still feeding on the eastern side at the North End, south of "Dead
Man's Cove". You can see a roof through the trees on the east side in this
area, and if you moved your eyes all the way down, there was the Ruff!

For birders not familiar with the East Pond, it would be a good idea to
bring wellies or waders and a scope. And, keep away from the northeast
corner of the pond! It's dangerous there and the signs are not visible.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff and Baird's Sandpiper (NO)...

2013-07-23 Thread Andrew Baksh
Doing a quick post from the field for those folks thinking of trying
for both birds. The Ruff and the Baird's Sandpiper were not seen
today.

Both these birds have not been seen since Sunday according to other
sources who reported negative.

I would give it a day or so but it very well could be that they both
pulled out with other birds.

Today, I did the hike from the south end to north and back. Still a
good number of shorebirds but the number of Short-billed Dowitchers
has dropped significantly.

Highlights included STILT SANDPIPER (29), WESTERN SANDPIPER (3),
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (1) and a WESTERN WILLET.

Very few shorebirds on the pond at the moment as they all retreated
presumably out the marsh to avoid a marauding young Peregrine Falcon
who kept putting everything up.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff - looks like the same bird

2016-06-30 Thread Andrew Baksh
I have posted two videos (poor quality ones at that) on my blog (
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2016/06/jamaica-bay-wildlife-refuge-tale-of-two.html)
showing what I am convinced is the same Ruff from the 25th and then
re-found this AM by Robert Proniewych. I am fascinated because this is
exactly a repeat of 2012 by what I am presuming is the same bird. I have
mused about "reverse migration" or another site nearby that is hosting
these birds when they disappear for a few days.

Other shorebirds on the East Pond this morning included, Greater
Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, Killdeer, Eastern Willet,
Least Sandpiper and American Oystercatcher.

For those interested, last night I published an updated map of the East
Pond which you could also access on my blog.

Cheers,

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Tonawanda WMA, Niagara County

2024-08-24 Thread Willie D'Anna
A female-type Ruff was found yesterday by Brad Carlson at Mud Creek Marsh,
which is on the east side of Griswold St, a quarter mile north of Rt 77.
Unfortunately, this discovery has coincided with long-planned and organized
retriever training at the marsh. When that is going on, there is a fair
chance the shorebirds will go elsewhere but after yesterday's trials, the
Ruff and others returned later in the day. I arrived shortly after 6 pm
yesterday and the trainers were packing up and moving out. They were no
longer in the pool but the shorebirds were, including the Ruff. Someone
reported this morning that the trials have resumed and that the Ruff was not
there. Let's hope it returns!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff, Muck-diving, and book giveaway!

2012-07-04 Thread kenalla...@earthlink.net
Fellow Birders;
Greetings one and all; I'm back in NYC (from Panama) for an extended period
(not for the best of reasons, more later in this post), and ventured to JBWR
for the first time in several years. Apparently, somewhere along the way this
now professional neotropical birding guide forgot a few basic rules about
birding in muddy boreal waters and shorelines. (In Panama one doesn't even
think of wading in mud-- too many bad things lurk in such habitat.) First off,
I didn't work hard enough to connect the favored term for the key landmark,
"Dead Man's Cove", to the "Mud Cove" on the map.. My fault, nobody else's, but
I am glad to see some more specific notes appearing today on this Listserve.
Second, I did not wait for other birders, or sightings of them down one
shoreline or another, before venturing out. I also did not truly consider the
mornings rain as a factor. So I headed for the east side of the East Pond--
wrong, wrong, wrong! I made it out a ways just fine, managed!
a 'scope view of the original Ruff (the angle I'd chosen was favorable for
this), but then decided to head back. I lost my tracks, and eventually found
myself inexorably trapped in waist-high and thick mud-- it really only took a
bad step or two, and I am indeed out of practice. I knew enough to sit tight,
and concentrated on protecting gear as best as possible, saving my strength-- I
could touch solid ground and was in no real danger at any time. Within 10
monutes or so, Seth Ausubel and a companion passed on the west side of the pond
(the drier, correct side), spotted me, and went for help (thank you Seth and
friend!). A bit later I had a couple of rangers and a Swat guy working with
me, and we managed to wingle my legs into an upright and clear position, and I
was shortly safely in the reeds. We even managed to grab every last bit of
gear! Police found my father waiting in the parking lot and brought him to me,
and they tossed me in the back of a pickup to go back!
to the Visitors' Center for clean-up, chagrined but still laughing at my
stupidity!
As I was hosing down myself and my gear, several eminent birders passed by,
including Seth, Andrew Baksh, and Tom Burke. How embarassing to finally meet
Tom after many years of communicating via e-mail only, under such
circumstances! All of the birders pledged to keep my incident a secret, but I
am the season for many cautionary notes tonight, and I 'fess up in hopes that
my errors in judgement will spare others a similar experience. And really, who
among us has not done something foolish in the pursuit of our beloved birds!
While Tom was graciously helping me hose off, he commented that I seemed in
remarkable good humor considering the situation; so I told him that it paled in
comparison to the matter that brought me back to NYC (for such an extended
stay) in the first place. I am battling what will eventually be terminal brain
cancer ( and I am fighting quite well thus far, thank you), and I am relishing
every moment of every day, even the challenging days are met with a life-loving
smile. This brings me to my final topic...
If the listowners will indulge me (and I will do my best to stay within the
rules) as part of organizing the rest of my life, I am ridding myself of
many things that are highly unlikely to be put to use again. My neotropical
birding library is in Panama, but I still have a solid collection here of US
bird-related publications (and many audio cd's), and much in the way of general
reference and world guides. I am feeling about for sales of some of the
high-ticket items, but basically I am looking to give away the bulk of the
collection, happy to see good books go to good use. I am preparing a simple
list, so if you've got a trip planned and need some literature, I may have it,
free of charge! Please contact me off-list ( kenalla...@earthlink.net ) if you
are interested; I am located in Flushing, have plenty of time to receive
prowsers, and am not averse to a birding/handoff excursion (dry land please) as
time allows. I hope the colection can go to good use-- I hat!
e to see things go to waste, but I do need to nip away at the pile of worldly
goods I've accumulated over the years!
I will also remind you that I am a professional birding tour planner and
guide based in Panama; I have obviously had to pass the guiding tasks on to
colleagues, but I am still managing several ambtious tours from here. This is
not a sales pitch-- any number of birders can tell you that I give away tour
advice quite freely, especially to NY birders-- a couple have even happened
across me in Panama, and been gifted with free life birds! Consider me a
resource; if anything, my committment to developing Panama's avitourism,
without thought of personal gain, is higher than ever!
Thank you for this indulgence; I am grateful to have a bit of time back in
this grand NY birding c

In addition to the RUFF, which is now working its way south on the east side.

Ken Fuestel just called to report getting word of an Avocet on the South End of
the East Pond.  He is looking at it right now.

Different bird from the earlier Ruff with very little molt around the neck.  I
did get some shots a short video clip documenting the bird.  2nd for Jamaica

[nysbirds-l] Ruff/Reeve Plum Beach Brooklyn NO

2014-05-30 Thread Shane Blodgett
No sign of yesterday's Ruff on the incoming tide. Very few shorebirds period.
High tide is 9:47 a.m.
Was initially found roosting on slack/falling tide yesterday about 1.5 hours
after high so worth checking again though last night's SW winds could have
moved some birds out.
Congratulations to Roberta Manian on an awesome Kings County find!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff/Reeve: No (still), Kings County

2014-05-30 Thread Sean Sime
Rob Jett and I were handed the baton from Shane Blodgett and stayed at
Plumb Beach till 2pm along with Bobbi Manion, the original finder. No luck
with the target species, but a flyover Red-throated loon in serious molt
proved exciting!
For those wondering, no marsh sparrows were seen or heard during our time
there and none were reported by birders there since first light.

Also, earlier at Marine Park a late Cliff Swallow was seen flying south and
away along the channel.

Good birding,

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ruff Update @ JBWR 1:59 pm

2016-06-25 Thread Andrew Baksh
The Ruff is being seen at the north end of the East Pond. It is on the east
side and making its way back south. If you are at the overlook at Big John's,
look north or south along the east side and you should be able to pick this
bird up.

It looks a bit like "Rufous Ruff" from 2012 but it has a lot more breeding
plumage -

[nysbirds-l] Ruff Continues at Jamaica Bay (East Pond)

2012-07-09 Thread TESSA1
I also saw the Ruff at exactly the same spot as described by JT in an
earlier post from today. Scanning a broad area from the spit closest to the
island along with a fellow birder from out of town (with much experience with
this species), we found the Ruff after close to 2 hours - which was around
peak high tide. This was certainly the duller of the 2 Ruffs reported. The
light and sun angle made it difficult to appreciate its coloration, so the
ID was based primarily through size, posturing and aggressive feeding style
while facing away from us the entire time. - We never got a good look at
the breast and sides, even with the bird moving around quite a bit.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff in Town of Shelby, Orleans County

2013-04-26 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
The transitional plumage Ruff on Rt. 31A is still present this (Friday)
morning as of 9:30. It was seen by Vicki Rothman.

For those who are curious, birders who have seen the Ruff at this location
and the Ruff at Kumph Marsh, Iroquois NWR are convinced that it is the same
individual. Photos appear to confirm that. The two locations are about ten
miles apart as the Ruff flies.

DIRECTIONS:

On Rt. 31A in Medina, Orleans County, between E Shelby Rd and Townline Rd in
flooded field on south side, across from yellow house. This is just East
of the Hamlet of Millville.

Good birding!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ruff - Timber Point East Marina (Suffolk)

2016-04-26 Thread Tim Healy
To any curious birders who just got off work: the Ruff apparently took off and
flew west around 2:30, high and far. A bit disappointing, but you never know
what tomorrow will bring. Tonight's winds don't look favorable for landbird
migration, so I will probably check Timber Point tomorrow morning to see if the
bird returns. I'd advise birders in the area to keep an eye out.

Cheers!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Ruff at Heckscher Park - NO (Suffolk Co.)

2018-05-24 Thread Mike
Probably another successful chase away thanks to the photographers on the scene
last night who relentlessly chased the bird from one pool to the other despite
being told that the bird was best observed and photographed from the car.

Unfortunately the solution may be to no longer post birds to the list until

Photographers definitely can be incredibly inconsiderate and chase away rare
(or not rare) birds (and then deny it). Indeed, I remember the Gyrfalcon (like
Ruff a bird I have never seen) spooked by a photographer at Blue Chip Farms who
sacrilegiously uses the moniker “LarryBird.” However, I am not sure calling
the police is really the way to go. So whether it’s birders v. photographers

anytime soon. In the words of Rodney King, c. 1992 -- who suffered a far
greater indignity than missing a ruff or a gyrfalcon:

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at JBWR East Pond - Yes 7pm - but...

2012-07-02 Thread Arie Gilbert

I was able to get a good look at the Ruff at Jamaica Bay east pond.
I arrived around 730 or so, just as Andrew Baksh was leaving, having
'held' the bird for my arrival. Thanks for the timely posts AB.

I then joined Bob Hayes who conveniently had the bird in his scope.

The bird was just south of north island on the eastern side of the pond.

Unfortunately, at about 8pm some kayakers capsized in the bay near the
east pond and two helicopters circling over the east pond put all the
birds up.

Hopefully the Ruff did not go too far.

Good luck if you go,

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (Queens Co.)

2012-08-02 Thread ken feustel
Sue and I birded the East Pond at JBWR this morning, starting at the south end
and working our way along the east side of the pond. We found the birding to be
better at the north end of the pond, where we quickly saw the American Avocet.
An immature Peregrine Falcon kept us company for much of the walk up the pond,
scattering the shorebirds in all directions. We had reached North Island when
we noticed a Ruff/Reeve on the east side of the pond a little north of the
island. We watched the bird for a while and I obtained some poor pictures
before something scared the birds and we could not relocate the Ruff. There has
been some speculation that this bird might be the same Reeve that was present
earlier on the East Pond. Sexual dimorphism in Ruffs is well known, and over
the years I have observed many (relative term) more Ruffs than Reeves. So size
differences in Reeves is not something I have had much experience with.

What struck us (and Andrew Baksh as well) was that this bird appeared larger
than the Short-billed Dowitchers (11") around it. If this was a Reeve (10")
you would expect it to be smaller than the dowitchers, although Paulson in
"Shorebirds of North America" indicates that a female "is of dowitcher size"
while a Ruff is similar in size to a Greater Yellowlegs (14"). I had observed
the Reeve at the south end of the East Pond a few weeks ago in the company of
Lesser Yellowlegs (10.5") and the birds appeared fairly similar in size. A Ruff
(12") would seem to be a better fit for today's bird, at least in terms of
size. My photograph of today's bird shows white feathering around the base of
the bill, a feature that is largely missing from last week's Reeve. I have
posted a poor photograph of the Ruff on my Flickr site. Compare the size of the
Ruff to the sleeping dowitcher on the extreme left of the photo. A photo of the
Reeve that was observed in July is also on the site at
http://flickr.com/photos/kfeustel/

There is likely better photos of the Ruff/Reeve floating around, so stay tuned.

Good Birding!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Iroquois NWR - not seen this morning

2013-04-19 Thread Willie D'Anna and Betsy Potter
Several people looked for the Ruff from about 6:00 to 9:00 this morning
without any sightings. This male was first reported from Kumph Marsh
yesterday evening by Melissa Mance, who secured photos. The shorebirds were
flying in and out Kumph Marsh this morning, so it is likely that there are
other spots with shorebird habitat. There is some at adjacent Cayuga Pool
but just a few GREATER YELLOWLEGS there. At Kumph Marsh we had 41 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS but others saw a few LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a single PECTORAL
SANDPIPER there.

Good birding!

Re:[nysbirds-l] Ruff on the East Pond - Access notes...

2013-07-19 Thread Andrew Baksh
Some additional access notes for East Pond visitors.

On July 9th, I had a blog post up that mentioned an area on the east side of
the pond that was not passable. This was addressed VERY QUICKLY, once the
issue was raised with NPS. NPS recruited the assistance of MTA who used their
heavy machinery to spread gravel and create a walkway around the breach. If
you bird the East Pond and are ambitious to do the schlep up on the East side,
you will see what I am talking about. Note: the area is past the Raunt.

NPS and the helpful and gracious folks from MTA deserve huge credit for
responding in a speedy manner. You should have no issues save a bit of
clambering up or down the rock pile as you get to the breach (this might not be
to everyone's liking depending on one's mobility). Look for the path I
bushwhacked on the north side of the walkway onto the pond; it should suffice
for users, but there is Poison Ivy in the area, so please watch your step.
With boots, you should have no problem as I have used it several times already
with no issues but it doesn't mean you should do the "river dance" through the
area.

The valve on the North End is closed, meaning the drawing down of the pond has
stopped for the moment. This is just a little over the target mark but good
enough given the dry spell. Should we have any excessive rain, I am sure the
valve will be reopened.

I think I have covered everything that I thought would be of assistance to
visitors, but should you have any questions on accessibility, please drop me a
note offline. I'll do my best to respond in a timely manner and hopefully
address any questions you may have.

Why is the solution always to punish the good birders who only want to enjoy
looking at these rare birds?

Why not punishing the misbehaving birders/photographers?

If you see someone breaking the law by harassing a migratory bird or stepping
on restricted area to get closer to it, call the police and photograph them
being arrested. Then post their photo on social media and let it be a lesson to
all the misbehaving birders.

This collective punishment doesn’t help any bird or birder.

2012-06-25 Thread Anthony Collerton
I'm sot sure that this has gone out State-wide yet. Wade & Melissa Rowley
posted a Ruff (breeding plumage male, photographed) on eBird, this morning.
Seen at 6pm last night. It was re-posted on Cayuga Birds this morning at
8:50am. I just heard third hand that the bird has been relocated and is
still there

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at JBWR still present at 8:50 pm

2012-07-01 Thread Richard Fried, VMD
I finished an interesting weekend of birding when I left the RUFF (at the north
end of the East Pond of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge) in the last vestiges of
twilight this evening. Hopefully it will remain overnight, giving additional
birders the opportunity to appreciate its unique beauty. Thank you Andrew and
Heydi for the discovery and quick post.

Lila Fried and I spent a productive but tiring weekend sampling New York's
early summer avifauna. We began Saturday morning with Boreal Chickadee,
Black-backed Woodpecker and Ruffed Grouse in the Adirondacks, before moving on
to the shorebirds and rails of Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge west of
Rochester. At last light we were serenaded by Sora as we tried to stave off
exsanguination by an infinite mosquito army. This morning we enjoyed a
Redheaded Woodpecker and Caspian Terns on the shore of Lake Ontario in Hamlin,
followed by a Clay-colored Sparrow in Canandaigua before lunch with the Bald
Eagles and Trumpeter Swans of Montezuma NWR. We got back to the city just in
time to see the Ruff which appears to be a different individual than the one
seen a few days ago at Montezuma.
I heart New York birding.

Fwd: [nysbirds-l] Ruff at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (Queens Co.)

2012-08-02 Thread Derek Rogers
Looks like Ken's photographed bird has a pronounced white ring around the
base of its bill. Andrew's and my photos (Andrew's are much better) are not
showing such a pronounced ring. Perhaps my eyes are decieving me, lighting
is always a factor out on the East Pond, but are these two different birds?
Just posing the question...

Sue and I birded the East Pond at JBWR this morning, starting at the south
end and working our way along the east side of the pond. We found the
birding to be better at the north end of the pond, where we quickly saw the
*American Avocet.* An immature Peregrine Falcon kept us company for much of
the walk up the pond, scattering the shorebirds in all directions. We had
reached North Island when we noticed a *Ruff/Reeve* on the east side of the
pond a little north of the island. We watched the bird for a while and I
obtained some poor pictures before something scared the birds and we could
not relocate the Ruff. There has been some speculation that this bird might
be the same Reeve that was present earlier on the East Pond. Sexual
dimorphism in Ruffs is well known, and over the years I have observed many
(relative term) more Ruffs than Reeves. So size differences in Reeves is
not something I have had much experience with.

What struck us (and Andrew Baksh as well) was that this bird appeared
larger than the Short-billed Dowitchers (11") around it. If this was a
Reeve (10") you would expect it to be smaller than the dowitchers, although
Paulson in "Shorebirds of North America" indicates that a female "is of
dowitcher size" while a Ruff is similar in size to a Greater Yellowlegs
(14"). I had observed the Reeve at the south end of the East Pond a few
weeks ago in the company of Lesser Yellowlegs (10.5") and the birds
appeared fairly similar in size. A Ruff (12") would seem to be a better fit
for today's bird, at least in terms of size. My photograph of today's bird
shows white feathering around the base of the bill, a feature that is
largely missing from last week's Reeve. I have posted a poor photograph of
the Ruff on my Flickr site. Compare the size of the Ruff to the sleeping
dowitcher on the extreme left of the photo. A photo of the Reeve that was
observed in July is also on the site at http://flickr.com/photos/kfeustel/

There is likely better photos of the Ruff/Reeve floating around, so stay
tuned.

Good Birding!

Re:[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge (Queens Co.)

2012-08-02 Thread J GLUTH
With the usual caveats about reliably identifying a bird based solely a
few photos stated up front. Andrew's images of today's Ruff show a bird
with much more brightly colored legs than the individual he photographed
back on the 15th.
Soft part coloration typically decreases in intensity post-breeding in
species where such changes occur, so I'd vote for today's bird indeed
being a new arrival.

[nysbirds-l] Ruff - East Pond Intel and suggestion on working this bird...

2016-06-26 Thread Andrew Baksh
For anyone thinking of checking the North End. Yesterday, I cleared the north
west trail so it is open. Please note, that knee high boots is a MUST, if
attempting to enter the pond at that end.

The water is still draining and is higher there than on the south with many
soft spots. Please be VERY careful if you venture there.

Yesterday, while a few of us observed the bird when it was first found on the
south end. It was noticeably jumpy and kept its distance. I would suggest
giving this bird ample room, as it may leave the pond if pushed. It did leave
the pond in the afternoon although this was more as a result of the tide having
turned so that is also the other variable to consider.

Here's to an awesome shorebirding season!

[nysbirds-l] Ruff at Timber Pt. East Marina, Great River (Suffolk Co.)

2017-04-20 Thread Ken Feustel
This morning about 9:30AM a Ruff was observed in the marsh northeast of the
boat dock at Timber Pt. Marina. While calling birders about the observation the
bird flew east and landed in the marsh north of the marina parking lot. Despite
extensive searching it had not been relocated as of 11:30AM. The bird in
question is a breeding male with a black ruff. The white underwings were
prominently displayed in flight. Good luck if you go -

[nysbirds-l] Ruff on the East Pond @ Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Queens County...

2013-07-19 Thread Andrew Baksh
A Ruff that looks a lot like last year's "Rufus Ruff" was seen first
near the south end of the East Pond. The bird relocated and I refound
it near Dead Man's Cove on the west side of the North End of the East
Pond. It has ventured right at the entrance so if you are going to
twitch this bird, be careful as you enter as it may just be there.

I would stick around but I have been working the pond since 5:30 this
morning and I am out of water. Good luck if you try for it. For
those of you not too familiar with the pond. Check my blog for a
recent post on how to bird the pond with the changes since Hurricane
Sandy.

Photos of the Ruff will also be posted later.

Hello all,

Here is a link to photos of today's Ruff at Jamaica Bay East
Pond(
http://birdingdude.blogspot.com/2013/07/ruff-redux-at-jamaica-bay-wildlife.html)
. The birds looks a lot like last year's "Rufus"/'Rufous" Ruff.

Included in my post are the shorebird numbers from today, for those of you
who are interested in what shorebirds are present. Lots of birds, but the
diversity has not started building as yet. It is *very, very hot* out on
the East Pond, so if you decide to visit, have lots of water and light
clothes. Remember knee high boots are best to shorebird on the East Pond.

Good luck and Good Shorebirding!
