[old-chevy-truck] New to the group
HI all. My name is Tom and I live in Surprise, AZ.. Yes that is a real place.. I have decided that I need an old Chevy in my garage.. My last was a 1956 GMC with a 283 conversion that I owned back in 1974. I'm in no rush to acquire a truck as I need to learn what to watch out for. So I'll be lurking and asking questions.. Hi, I have a 52'chevy 1/2ton that I've had for several years, it runs great but with old stuff there's always something that needs to be fixed or changed to get it back to original. Going by the serial# the engine is a 55' 235.The rear motor mounts are just a couple of chunks of tire tread stuck between the clutch and cross member (obviously not original)!!The cross member looks original but doesn't seem to match up to the shape of the bottom of the clutch, so I don't know what I need to modify? When I was growing up(early 70's)I worked for my uncle at his 66 gas station and he had two trucks of this era. They're the first vehicle I learned how to drive, so I guess that's why I like them. I don't remember a lot of detail about them though, so I thought this group could help with that. Any help with the motor mount issue would be appreciated. Thanks! I have a 54 stakebed chevy truck. I bought it disassembled and have spent the last 6 months putting it together. It has a original green paint and most of the parts are original. The electrical system was missing, so I purchased an easy wire system that is not going to work, to much aftermarket wiring. The problem I am having is I cant get any spark to the plugs. I am looking at wire diagrams and they are not right. I am going to order the harness from chevyduty and maybe that will help. What do you think? Dave Ole Chevy and GMC trucks rule! Re: [old-chevy-truck] New to the group
Hi Dave As I mentioned in an earlier post, I (like others on the list) have used the wiring harness from Chevy Duty. It's relatively inexpensive (about $100) and easy to install. Keep in mind that it is not period corrrect in that it is plastic insulated vs the original cloth type. Ken Dave Caddick [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a 54 stakebed chevy truck. [old-chevy-truck] New to the group/GMC engine question
Hi my name is Tim and I am new to the group. Been lurking, alot of great information. Been working on a 51 five window that was a 3/4 ton. I put the cab on a 49 1/2 ton frame. Was running a 216 but have rebuilt a 62 235 bored .040 over ground the crank .010 and getting the head done. Found a local country neighbor who works out of a shop at home. Great machinist and very reasonable. Keeping the orginal look. Have done all the body work, replaced all the rusted panels sandblasted the frame and painted it. Going with a 12 generator in place of the 6v. Orginal beanch seat recovered. My question is this I recently was able to purshase a 3/4 ton frame with the axles and a decent cab. It has a complete GMC motor serial #6107323 or 8. This is a 53 248 the best I can figure out.Is this a full pressure oil motor? Not real familiar with GMC motors. It has a 4 speed behind it. The motor turns over. I was thinking of possibly using this motor in place of the 235. Would my 3 speed bolt up to this bell housing or would I need to swap out the bell housing, fly wheel and preasure plate. I purshased this parts truck for $100. Any ideal the value of this complete motor to inclued the air cleaner. Thanks Ole Chevy and GMC trucks rule! Re: [old-chevy-truck] New to the group/GMC engine question
Tim, the 235 and GMC are longer than a 216 in waterpump area. You will have radiator clearance problem, have to move it ahead or can get short shaft pump for the 235. No short pump for GMC that I am aware of. The mounts are about the same. YOu can use either bellhousing between engines and tranny's will all exchange. The GMC has always been a full pressure oiler, even the older ones. They are the better, stronger engine. It is really a Buick design adapted long ago. Value is whatever you believe in old parts purchases. $100 wasn't bad, but some risky if you didn't hear it run. At least it turns over, you said. The engine size is usually stamped on flat spot behind distributor. Clean it off for stamping. The first three numbers are the engine size. ahllama [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi my name is Tim and I am new to the group. Been lurking, alot of great information.
