Andrea--

At the last update to the icubator page you mentioned above, I think
only the French list was not included, it was "in request" when I did
this update. You woule need to search INFRA requests to determine really
what is established (Apache condoned) at this time. So, good that you
put some information about the Native Language Mailing lists on :

http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html

but I think the new link you added really needs to go to the project
(incubator) page on Native Languages for now:

 http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/native-lang.html

and not the existing (legacy) native language main page.

What you're saying makes perfect sense in the long term, but for the
moment we don't have enough involvement from native language
participants to directly edit the native language pages to add the
mailing list information to each main native language site.

So, if you could change the link you put into
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html

that would be good, and I will try to keep up with new native-language
mailing lists a bit more.

were about future events, such as future mailing lists, etc. I'm not
tossing our the source files for the timeline, so we can always update

Here is what I have so far:

http://www.robweir.com/AOO.png

As you can see, I'm classifying the milestones in three buckets.
These, of course, are debatable. There is a lot of cross-over effects.
The enablement of a new server by Infrastructure has implications for
the community, as well as for development, and development is part of,
not different than the community, etc. I get that. But I think this
is an effective way to show what we've done in terms of server
migration, code work, and growing the community. A little color
doesn't hurt either. The distinctions are artificial, but when you
think of it, even our quarterly Board reports use similar categories.

In any case, I'd love more events and dates. For example, our 3.4
release notes are full of enhancements. I'd love to list some more,
which I would, if I had dates.

-Rob

We have a Linux-32 bit buildbot as well, but I don't know when it was
initiated. :/

Any errors that pop out?

Any additional accomplishments I should highlight in the timeline?

Some times I am missing dates for include:

date Japanese list started
date Italian list started

(has German list started?)

dates for milestones with the freeBSD and OS/2 ports

Probably missing some buildbots

Missing date for "copyleft" free milestone?

Any others?

It looks really cool seeing this plotted graphically. We've
accomplished quite a lot.

Nice. A few observations:
- Check "has the timeline above shows"
- Now that I notice, the New Color Picker is not that interesting in
strategic terms. It is a nice feature and very good to have, but it was
contributed to other projects before, so it's not something peculiar to
Apache OpenOffice.
- I would include links to all resources you list in the paragraph
"includes mailing lists, support forums, wikis, bug databases..."

Regards,
Andrea.

Nice, indeed. I concur on links and s/has/as/, plus you might check the
order of the legend against the order of the plots.

AOO's Chart module could probably be extended to produce a diagram like
this, as a type of XY ("scatter") chart.

A draft blog post using the timeline to make a point about our
migration efforts:

https://blogs.apache.org/preview/OOo/?previewEntry=an_apache_openoffice_timeline

It is worth noting, as we retire the last of the Oracle servers next
Friday, how much we've accomplished.

Yes, great to have a kind of time history handy when it comes to

+1 from me too.

PS: The only odd bit for me is the Copyleft blob. Because it requires two
lines of text, it seems to be some big splat rather than a duration. If you
just say "Removal of Copyleft" or "License Cleanups" it would fit better. It
might be even better if the words were a legend text like the rest with a
left-half button at the start, a right-half button on the right.

Whatever you do, it is a great diagram.

Thank, everyone for the feedback. I'm trying to include as much of it as I can.

I just thought of another data point that we could include:

Apache Software Foundation created: March 25th, 1999

Seems fair, since other projects are in the practice of claiming code
contributions that were made far before their project's existed.

You might perhaps enter dates (even approximate) for Commencement of IP
clearance and Completion of IP clearance. I remind you that this timeline may
be viewed by the unskilled, so terms such as IP and Pootle need some
explanation.

Interesting idea. I made the copyleft removal be an extent rather
than just indicate the points. See the revised version here:

One of the memes about this project that you hear is that we spent an
exorbitant amount of time just removing copyleft components. This
puts it in perspective and shows that we spent relatively little time
doing that.

I'd call it "Replacement of copyleft modules": the effort was in
replacing stuff, just removing would have been trivial.

I'd actually prefer to avoid the "copyleft" word since it may be hard to
understand and potentially confusing, but I can't come up with a concise
phrasing for "Replacement of components with incompatible licenses".

Will this be sent out after the 15 March shutdown? Is that something
to include somehow?

Any others?

- Something related to QA. Maybe the moment when QA tests became
available on the wiki.
- The first new major feature entirely developed in the Apache era
(should be the SVG import)

AOO timeline of accomplishments

2012-03-08 Thread Rob Weir
I am working on a blog post that will feature a timeline showing what
we have accomplished since the project has started. Obviously a
timeline is based on dates and events. The ones have so far are here.
