An include statement is the best way to do this currently. I would also add an wish list item to LaunchPad to include this information for use in the templates. I have also loaded each branch on a test server to give people an idea of how things would look in an all item world or in an all copy world. https://mlnc2.noblenet.org/eg/staff/ uses 'items.' https://mlnc3.noblenet.org/eg/staff/ uses 'copies' The login for each server is admin / evergreen123. I think it would be good to get broader community feedback before deciding on a direction. While working on the branch, I realized we also need to make a decision about the use or shelving location vs. copy location. What I would like to do is send out a community survey that asks: 1) do we need these terms to be consistent (people may be perfectly happy using items and copies interchangeably) and b) which terms are preferred. Do you all think this is the best approach for moving forward? Are there any other inconsistent terms we should be adding to the survey? Let me know what you think. The LP bug is available at https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1474455. A small screencast showing the new behavior for the navigation menu is available at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B74gDMUDwDXqWWFLbDhLV3p3bzg/view?usp=sharin g Kathy On 07/10/2015 03:14 PM, Dan Wells wrote: Hello all, This came up in Kathy's recent thread asking about the patron editor, and rather than hijack that thread, I'd like to broaden the conversation a little, because the same usability issues will affect many areas of the staff client. To cut straight to the point, I strongly believe that using fixed position for large portions of the staff client interface will have a major positive effect on usability. This has been applied and proven in desktop applications for decades, and is now being rediscovered within the browser environment as web "pages" become applications. There is plenty of evidence out there to support this stance, but here is a quick read which highlights the point well: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2012/09/11/sticky-menus-are-quicker-to-navig ate/ If we consider the mockups from our design internship a few months back, in the screenshot Kathy referenced, the entire top area (and, in this case, the right sidebar) would ideally be fixed position. The only scrolling area should be the actual form. For any who attended my talk on design at the conference, this is exactly the concern of rule of thumb #3: "Scroll the data, not the interface", with "data" broadly including all information and workspaces which are not "the program". (Here is Kathy's screenshot link again for reference: http://media.tumblr.com/69beec7802a938b889bdfa80c7e0d54b/tumblr_inline_nkn0o kinXl1t572gy.png ) The main complaint driven at fixed screen elements is that they take up too much space. They do take up space, obviously, but with the amount of use these elements get on a moment by moment basis, the space is well worth taking. In cases where more workspace is truly of benefit, we are better off using fixed position with a "hide" option (auto or manual) than we would be with using scroll, as we can retain the clear benefits of persistent availability and predictability. (Expert users might also choose to do without some toolbars and rely on keyboard shortcuts, but that sort of use will never be feasible for many staff client users and scenarios.) As the Smashing Magazine article points out, the easiest way to understand the situation is to simply imagine other software working with fully-scrolling interfaces. In this imaginary scenario, when you are using a word processor, a spreadsheet application, or even a browser itself, all of your menus, toolbars, tabs, etc., would simply scroll off the screen as soon as you tried to scroll down to see additional content. It's likely that some ancient desktop software did exactly that, but if they did, they are now extinct, and not without good reason. Another valid concern sometimes raised is the effect a rich, fixed interface might have on a small screen appliance, like a phone. This topic should be addressed, but I believe it is best kept separate from the problems at hand, which are already large enough. My personal stance would be that a full, first-class staff client interface on a small screen device is not a realistic concern for a community of our size, needs, and capabilities. Our bar for using the full client on phones should be "not impossible", and then we can re-dedicate a portion of our energy to creating limited, purpose-built interfaces for functions of known value on small devices (e.g. inventory scanning), and which are also likely to best include some fixed top and/or bottom elements. I also want to emphasize that none if this is meant to disparage the work which has been done so far. It is much harder to make something out of nothing than to take something and make it better. I also acknowledge that, while I have spent large amounts of time studying the web client, I have found zero time to contribute to the actual web client code. That said, if we can help establish consensus around where we want to end up, I know I would feel more comfortable jumping in, and I suspect others might as well. Sin

No amount of testing is going to uncover all of the odd little problems like working in a live environment will. 2) When moving back and forth between the two environments, staff will be more aware of the improved user interface and performance, and I believe they will be more eager to transition completely to the new environment. 3) The browser-based circulation module may offer some immediate relief to those frontline circ staff who are struggling with antiquated machines and slow networks. 4) The new modules can begin to be thoroughly tested on mobile devices that cannot run the current client. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Holds placed prior to status change
We generally add the titles before release date, and keep them in the In-processing status. This allows the holds to be placed, but the title is technically unavailable. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Configuring Star TSP 100 on Linux workstation
My question is what are the printer settings inside of Evergreen. I know from working with this printer, the printer settings inside Evergreen make a difference in how this printer prints. I've not worked on Evergreen on a Linux box, but the page settings in the Printer Settings Editor under Admin, Workstation Administration is most likely where the printer is having the problems. In the Page Settings, all margins in Evergreen should be zero, and all Headers and Footers must be blank. Check this for default and Receipts. The default set up is margins at 0.5, and General internet Headers and footers. Hope this helps. We use Evergreen 2.4, and our staff workstations run Linux Mint Debian Edition. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble getting the receipts to print correctly. The printer drivers are recognized, and all of programs are able to print to the printer just fine. However, Evergreen seems to have issues with it. It will only print if I have the paper size set to a "normal" size (e.g. US letter). However, if I print to the printer with that size paper set, the text is tiny (as in, 1-2 point font). If I have the paper size set to the printer tape size (e.g. 72mm X 2000mm), then Evergreen simply won't print to the printer at all. Does anyone have any wisdom to impart on how I can get our receipts to printer correctly? Is this something where I should be changing the font size in the receipt template? Is there a way I can get Evergreen to recognize the correct paper size? I've attached the printer settings. Cheers! I've not used acquisitions in Evergreen, not even attempted to look at it. But we use collection codes to tell our catalogers where to place something. The code corresponds to a set if Item attributes (Shelving location, Circulation modifier, Circulation library, etc...). If this information is being sent to the vendor, the vendor takes the code and populates the item field with the correct information for batch loading. So imagine there are $5.00 in overdue fines and $3.00 in processing fees on one circulation. If the user pays $8.00 all at once, there's one payment covering all billing line items, and there's no breakdown showing that three of the dollars went to processing fees. I did some work (which has surely suffered from bit rot) back in the 1.2 days to provide such a breakdown in a reporting source, but that did not make it into the core code back then. The upshot of that is that it's possible to do, but would take some effort to teach modern Evergreen that trick. I'll put up a launchpad bug and attach the code I have. Given time or sponsorship, hopefully that could make it into a future release. -- Mike Rylander | Director of Research and Development | Equinox Software, Inc. / Your Library's Guid
Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Report question: Need detailed cash report by workstation or org unit
I have a similar report that runs for us, I had the same problems trying to get the Source Payments:All to give me what I wanted. I finally switched to using Payments:Desk which allowed me to limit by workstation. I then limited it by Cash Drawer: Owing Library: Org Unit Then is Display fields, I have Cash Drawer: Owing Library: Short (Policy) Name. The only limitation I found is it does not include Forgive, work, voids, and goods payments. One of our library systems needs a detailed cash report to send to their accountant, which contains all the transactions and what they were for by workstation or library (there are 3 branches). They noticed, in the report template we created, that the amount didn't match the summary report they got from Admin--Local Admin--Cash Reports. We discovered that it was because one of the base filters was Home Library--but it was the patron's home library, so was including the amount when they paid it at one of the other branches. What the library really needs is a filter and displayed field on either Workstation or Org Unit, so they can arrange on those, but I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to do that. Currently, the report uses Source as Payments: All. It displays Payment Date/Time, Name, Cash Amount, Check Amount, Credit Card Amount, Forgive Amount, and Barcode (patron). Base filters currently are Payment Date/Time and Home Library I tried using Billable Transactions-->User::workstation ID or workstation org unit and tried using Accepting Staff Member::workstation ID or workstation org unit, but those didn't work, either. There was no data entry field or list on the template when I tried those (probably because they're "link"?). Any help or advice would be much appreciated! I've set up a receipt template that includes the %shelf_expire_time% macro, which should be displaying when the item can be pulled off the holds shelf. However, when the slip is printed, all we get is "%shelf_expire_time%" instead of the date/time. Are we using the wrong macro, or is anyone else having (or has had) this problem? Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] Receipt printers
We use the Star TSP100 Tear Bar (TSP113) driver for the TSP100's. We have not changed any of the other settings, and we occasionally will get what you are seeing. When we do get this, there is usually something messed up in the Evergreen profile on the machine. I have not traced it completely down to what would be causing the problem. I usually will just delete the profile from the User's folder (C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Application Data\OpenILS\open_ils_staff_client), and then recreate it by re-registering the workstation and then setting the printer up in Evergreen. Re: [OPEN-ILS-GENERAL] User Surveys Question
We use it to query wither patrons want us to email them our newsletters. I used the survey because accessing the results was easier than trying to use any other method. The biggest con is administrating the surveys once you add one to the system. We are on version 1.6.1.2. I am hoping that Administrating surveys are easier in 2.x, which we will be migrating to later this year.
