Our experience with the AutoDock mailing list with members-only posting is
pretty
positive. When a user registers to the mailing list, his/her first post needs
to be
approved once, then future posts get straight to the mailing list.
Spam messages can be either ignored or rejected.
I don't know how much work would be to filter messages without this mechanism,
but it is
fairly easy to manage (I'm basically the only one taking care of it).
On the other hand, I don't know openbabel-dev works, but if every single
message needs to
be approved, it sounds like more work to me.
