My experience with a GT460 hasn't been too stellar. If you enable the
screensaver, after blanking the screen it starts outputting error
messages as fast as the logging device can write them. When it goes
to suspend it goes into the WAIT mode, writing log entries every 3
seconds. Unfortunately it sometimes goes into WAIT even with the
screensaver disabled, but the screensaver method is quite repeatable.

It seems to take a power cycle to get the card working again once this
has happened, so for now at least, a GT460 seems to be unusable :-(.

Hopefully this will be fixed by 7001754, but I would treat any of the
higher end Nvidia cards with suspicion for now...

2011-02-15 Thread Deano
Hi everybody,

We are having a brainstorm of website ideas to prepare for working out a
series of goals that can be turned into something real by our web people.

To facilitate this we have put up a page on the wiki to take ideas and
examples (and anti-examples) of features and sites that would make the OI
website a great front door to the project.
These will be used to help the web design feature the best our community can
think of. We will be discussing the ideas at the next OI irc meeting, next
Tuesday, so if you have any thoughts on how the website should look, feel

[OpenIndiana-discuss] Problems with attached disk chassis

2011-02-15 Thread Roy Sigurd Karlsbakk
Hi all

I just got a new disk chassis for 2,5" disks with 2+10 SSDs (two smaller ones
for SLOG, the rest for L2ARC). These are attached to a SAS6 LSI controller, but
I cannot see any drives. Output of scanpci is http://pastebin.com/aGKR9X32 and
prtconf -D says http://pastebin.com/W6yqXRRR and then, prtconf -v says
http://karlsbakk.net/prtconf-v.txt.gz

I also tried connecting the chassis to the existing SAS3 controller that indeed
works (12 2TB drives connected there), but still no cigar.

Does anyone know where to start debugging this? Can it be a hardware
configuration issue, or can it be software still?

Vennlige hilsener / Best regards

Now that CUPS is become defacto *nix standard, it's good to see some
manufacturers supporting it out of the gate. But I'd still opt for a
Postscript, or Brother's functionally equivalent "BR Script" printer -
they'll run forever w/o any need for driver updates.

AFAIK, CUPS is not going to get your scanner or fax working though. For

2011-02-15 Thread Guy Woolley
Thanks very much for the info. The Samsung "Unified driver for Linux"
package has buried deep in it two folders named "CUPS" and "SANE", so
fingers crossed it might work with OI148 (it does indeed have CUPS
management via localhost:631). On the other hand looking at those
folders there's no apparent reference to any .ppd file. So I'm a bit
confused as to what is being offered. Bizarrely Samsung.co.uk Support
doesn't have an email contact though I could write them a letter (!) or
telephone (chances of speaking to someone familiar with the Solaris 11
family at the end of the phone probably about 0). I'll keep digging and
report back any success.

check OI-147 on VirtualBox with the LiveCD install.

The Brother DCP-9055CDN is not listed in the CUPS Add Printer dialog,
but you have an option to add the PPD file ("CUPS driver") for it.
Likewise, the Samsung printer isn't list, but you said you can get the
PPD file from Samsung. You might check that the Linux driver is the
PPD file.

My recent printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one, and it
prints simplex and duplex. I haven't done any host-initiated scanning
(don't know if it is possible.) The OS's I've used with it are
OpenSolaris 2009.06, snv_134, and Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and I had
to find and then add the PPD file for it.

Configure CUPS with http://localhost:631 in a web browser. There are
comprehensive help pages there, too.

Perhaps you may have something amiss with the Screen line in your

I 'm beginning to suspect that xorg does not have timings for some

After getting nowhere with my attempts on tracking down the power management

You can add a mirror to rpool after the installation - see

During installation, just select 2 disks and they're automatically mirrored

Currently the only way to find the mailing list (at least which I could

error. See below. What can I do to mitigate this problem?

Now we need to know where your favorite CPAN sites are located. Push
a few sites onto the array (just in case the first on the array won't
work). If you are mirroring CPAN to your local workstation, specify a
file: URL.

First, pick a nearby continent and country (you can pick several of
each, separated by spaces, or none if you just want to keep your
existing selections). Then, you will be presented with a list of URLs
of CPAN mirrors in the countries you selected, along with previously
selected URLs. Select some of those URLs, or just keep the old list.
Finally, you will be prompted for any extra URLs -- file:, ftp:, or
http: -- that host a CPAN mirror.

Select your continent (or several nearby continents) [] 28

No matter what value I give it says "invalid items entered, try again"

[OpenIndiana-discuss] OpenIndiana mailing list

2011-02-15 Thread Dmitry G. Kozhinov

Hi,

To whom it may concern. The link to OpenIndiana mailing list
(http://openindiana.org/mailman) should be added somewhere at the main page.

Currently the only way to find the mailing list (at least which I could
find) is way too long and hidden:
"Documentation" -> "FAQ" -> "Where can I get more info or keep up to
date with the project?" -> "Please join our mailing lists –
http://openindiana.org/mailman";.

Could it be e.g. "Support" -> "Mailing lists" ?

Dmitry.

Hello Guy,
My experience recently has been with Canon and Epson. Both
companies claim to be opensource-friendly, but Canon's openness
only extends as far as giving you pre-compiled linux binary
blobs for its actual raster engine.

Epson, on the other hand, provides proper buildable source for
their consumer-grade inkjets (I've got the Stylus Photo TX810fw)
and it works very nicely indeed. The only quibble I've got is
that I still need to hack on the ppd so it'll do duplexing for
me. But that's not a high priority at the moment.

Epson's drivers are available via http://avasys.jp/eng/linux_driver,
and they do have a section for lasers.

Once you've got their bits installed, it's very easy to tell
CUPS about them, and away you go.

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Multifunction colour laser printer for OSOL, OI ?

2011-02-15 Thread Bruce Hoiem
OSol, including Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and OI-147 all have the CUPS
printing system, so all you need is the ppd file for the printer you
choose. I haven't checked OI-148, but suspect it keeps CUPS. I did check
OI-147 on VirtualBox with the LiveCD install.

The Brother DCP-9055CDN is not listed in the CUPS Add Printer dialog,
but you have an option to add the PPD file ("CUPS driver") for it.
Likewise, the Samsung printer isn't list, but you said you can get the
PPD file from Samsung. You might check that the Linux driver is the PPD
file.

My recent printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one, and it prints
simplex and duplex. I haven't done any host-initiated scanning (don't
know if it is possible.) The OS's I've used with it are OpenSolaris
2009.06, snv_134, and Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and I had to find and
then add the PPD file for it.

Configure CUPS with http://localhost:631 in a web browser. There are
comprehensive help pages there, too.

Bruce

You just need to look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change "vesa" to "nv"
- that should do it. My Xorg.conf file reads simply.

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Card0"
  Driver "nv"
EndSection

I have a 27" monitor that needs 1920 x 1080. Vesa looks terrible for me
as it doesn't get past 1280x 1024 (if I remember rightly). It's a shame
as this card is a) cheap and b) looks pretty good when it does its stuff
under WinXP.

The other downside is that most of the Screensavers shipped with OI
don't work for me.

Best of luck

Guy

Hi,
Did not work for me. I made my xorg.conf to look like yours but I get the
