Sorry. I'll go to the OpenCSW group if I find I need their packages. OpenIndiana didn't seem to be listed on their website as something they support. And after three weeks of my first OI install, I probably wasn't thinking very clearly. System admin stuff isn't an area I'm very strong in. Have a nice night! Why not look at pkgsrc? It is working well on Openindiana/Illumos, and is supported by Joyent ( http://www.perkin.org.uk/posts/pkgsrc-2012Q3-packages-for-illumos.html). The old Solaris up to 10 has SVR4, the new Solaris has IPS. So these are really the only options for any distro targeted for the mainstream users. Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Knowledge Base for Compiling and InstallingSoftware Not Available as Packages.
Hi, But what about using pkgbuild from the spec file extra (SFE) team which is available from the OI-SFE repository ? You can build you packages and publish them to your own local IPS repository in no time. You actually don't need to learn how to make IPS packages, just write spec files like for RPM. Moreover pkgbuild supports generation of SVR4 packages. While I don't understand why people should hate IPS, what I see indeed as you point it, is lack of simple reproductible steps tutorials written by users and lack of commitment around one way to provides packages. If you just want IPS packages to be built from source I cannot see why you would try to find another solution than the one used to build the OI repositories: it's straightforward and a build zone can be set up quickly. I started writing short tutorials for a bundle of spec files for scientific software I want to contribute to SFE here http://forge.distrans.org/projects/oi-sci/wiki It's not elaborate yet but anyone willing to contribute is welcome. Or if you can identify missing piece of information I am willing to fill the blanks. Best regards, a On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 6:23 AM, Dormition Skete dormitionsk...@hotmail.com wrote: Well, ideally, if every one of us who needed to install a piece of software that wasn't available in package form would make and sponsor an IPS package for it, I think that would be the best thing. But I, for one, am not real keen on learning how to make IPS packages -- especially since so many people hate IPS, and in my opinion, its future looks questionable. What you are proposing sounds interesting, but again, it's yet another thing to learn, and another layer of complexity which also duplicates that which the packaging system should take care of. For most (?) of us, we build a server once or twice a year. Some things are just not worth the trouble to automate. My own rule of thumb is, every program I write has to pay for itself -- with money and/or time saved -- within the first year. If it doesn't do that, I don't bother with it. On Dec 19, 2012, at 9:55 PM, Jason Matthews wrote: Perhaps some of you all might like to contribute to it, too? This is an interesting topic. I am also fond of reproducible processes. I learned from a colleague long ago to write Makefiles which in turn run other make files to boot strap an entire software stack -- sort of a lord of the rings, one ring to rule them all sort of setup. I was introduced to this concept about twelve years ago and I have been using it ever since. I haven't bridged the gap between my /usr/local build and pkg formatted packages but I can't help but wonder if it is better to supply an automated build system rather than manual instructions -- any automated build system that worked would be preferable to doing something manually. A few years ago I thought about releasing the whole thing in a VirtualBox image because then it is fully plug and play but never got around to it. One down side is the image would be rather large to accommodate the large number of packages now included in my build system. I am not poopooing your idea in any way. [OpenIndiana-discuss] add_drv bge Driver (bge) succesfull added but failed to attach
Hi, I have tried to upgrade my laptop Acer TravelMAte 7730 from os b134 to oi b157a7. In b134 the driver bcme has worked for the BCM5764M. After the upgrade neither bcme nor bge driver works. I can see that the driver _init and _info functions are called but never the attach routine. So it should not be really problem with the driver, but rather with the matching of the device compatible values 'pciex14e4,1684'? How can I investigate such issue? # prtconf -Dv shows also no 'System software properties' (from bge.conf) and no 'Driver properties' for this device. The nexus node instance of the device show for pci-occuoant also only an empty value='' .? Any hints? Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Installing Java 7
On 2012-12-20 11:53, Andrew Myers wrote: Thanks Richard for your advice. This seems to have worked. Also note that some programs (esp. system-bundled ones in Sun Solaris) can rely on particular definition of JAVA_HOME env.var pointing to a directory. Valid definition for the standard directory structure is JAVA_HOME=/usr/java which you update by updating the /usr/jdk/latest symlink. Keep track of JVM customizations you might put in place, to redo them upon upgrades (tzupdate, private CA certificates, etc.) However, as with any software, some versions are better compatible than others due to some intimacy between JVM and compiled programs, so certain programs might require older JVM to stay around in the path they expect to use (or reconfigure their path from default to particular for such programs). Finally, to help me install JDK from tarballs/selfextractors I have packaged the Sun-standard dirs and symlinks to precreate the needed structure. I attach a SVR4 for Solaris and a RPM for RHEL/CentOS. In particular, this sticks needed symlinks to current installation into /usr/bin. Feel free to use or integrate anyplace :) A typical installation procedure looks like this: :; gzcat $DOWNLOAD_DIR/COSjavadirs-1.6.0-1.pkg.gz /tmp/x :; pkgadd -d /tmp/x :; cd /usr/jdk/instances :; $DOWNLOAD_DIR/jdk-6u37-solaris-i586.sh :; $DOWNLOAD_DIR/jdk-6u37-solaris-x64.sh :; rm -f jdk1.6.0 ln -s `ls -1d jdk1.6.0_* | tail -1` jdk1.6.0 (likewise for jdk1.7.*) In this structure, /usr/jdk/instances/jdk1.6.0 points to the latest jdk1.6.0_* installation, and /usr/jdk/latest statically points to ./instances/jdk1.6.0 (in our conservative case), and /usr/java points to ./jdk/latest, and /usr/bin/java and an horde of other programs point to ../java/bin/java etc. HTH, //Jim Klimov ___ OpenIndiana-discuss mailing list OpenIndiana-discuss@openindiana.org http://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss

Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Finding pools after reinstall
From: Jason Matthews [mailto:ja...@broken.net] Which motherboard are you using? Do you have the drives connected to an HBA or the motherboard? If HBA, which HBA? If they are connected to the motherboard, and the ports are sata, your best chance of making them work is to first try the ports in 'AHCI' mode. If that doesn't work, select 'legacy' or some synonym there of. If that doesn't work, go back to AHCI and let's find you a driver if possible. But he didn't change the hardware - in the OP he said he replaced one disk (the boot disk) and installed openindiana where he was previously running opensolaris. ___ OpenIndiana-discuss mailing list OpenIndiana-discuss@openindiana.org http://openindiana.org/mailman/listinfo/openindiana-discuss

I can't tell you the internals of how the NX protocol works, but it does *not* require or use XDMCP or X directly, I have used regular NX on Linux hosts in runlevel 3 (no X11 running directly on the host), just with all the software installed. I wish I knew the internals of the NX protocols, then I would help with this. :( On Thu, Dec 20, 2012 at 9:05 AM, Jonathan Adams t12nsloo...@gmail.comwrote: root@jadlaptop:/etc# svccfg -s application/x11/x11-server listprop | grep exec start/exec astring /lib/svc/method/x11-server -d 0 -c %i %m stop/exec astring :kill -TERM I'm not sure what I changed in svccfg ... [OpenIndiana-discuss] Disappearing files on FAT32 flash drive
I sneaker net stuff between my primary system and my OI based internet host. I've had a couple of instances now of files disappearing while attempting to transfer them. The first time I assumed it was a corrupted filesystem and reformatted the drive. It just happened again. Everything in two subdirectories disappeared while going from OI back to Sol 10. Move back to OI they were still gone. In this last instance, I had been editing the contents of the flash drive rather than merely copying a file, so I lost everything I'd done. This does not make me happy. Interestingly, one of the subdirectories that lost its contents contained copies of stuff from Sol 10 and other than attaching the files to an email, had nothing done with them. So bad flash drive or OI bug? Yes, I am unmounting the drive before I move it. NOT having fun! Re: [OpenIndiana-discuss] Disappearing files on FAT32 flash drive
If the USB flash drive is old, it is possible that the areas for FAT tables wore out more than other cells on the stick. I've had failures like this when most of the flash was okay, but FAT was corrupted - breaking the drive's usability. Repartitioning it so it starts later (is smaller) and puts FAT onto non-worn-out cells helped in a case or two at least.
