[orkut-developer] Re: NEWS: AppInfo page now smartly redirects to Canvas page

2010-12-15 Thread Bruno Oliveira
We expect this behavior to be final :)

So bottom line is: link to PublicAppInfo when you want the smart redirect,
link to AppInfo when you really want AppInfo.

[orkut-developer] Re: NEWS: AppInfo page now smartly redirects to Canvas page

2010-12-13 Thread anatoly
Didn't know about the public info url (PublicAppInfo).
Just tested and it correctly redirects to canvas if the user has the
app installed.

I'm a bit confused though since when the app is not installed
and I go to PublicAppInfo I'm redirected to AppInfo.

Is it safe to link to PublicAppInfo? I mean is this behavour final or
should we expect to changes?

thanks

Sorry, by public app info page, I had meant:

 http://www.orkut.com/Main#PublicAppInfo?appId=[APP_ID_HERE]

Indeed, the format #AppInfo? URL format does not perform the redirect.
 Thanks pointing this out.

Just tested this and I have the app installed but I'm not redirected
from info to canvas.
I'm staying on info.

info page looks like so:
http://www.orkut.com/Main#AppInfo?appId=[APP_ID_HERE]

am I missing something?

thanks

 Hey everyone,

I'd like to announce a new feature. It's a minor change but it's really
 handy.

The AppInfo page now smartly redirects to Canvas page.

This means less clicks and likely more ad conversions.

 Before:

Users landing in the AppInfo page for an app were shown the app info
regardless of whether he had the app installed or not. Users who had it
installed had to click View App in order to run it.

 Now:
Upon landing in the AppInfo page, a smarter decision is made: if the
user already has the application installed on his profile, he is
immediately redirected to the Canvas page for the app. If he does not
have the app, he remains in the App Info page.

 Why this is cool:
If you are attracting users to your app info page via ads or links
elsewhere, users will land in the appropriate page:

 - old users who already had the app will go straight into the Canvas
page and run the app without having to go through the extra step of
clicking View App. This will probably up your ad conversions from
 existing users.

 - new users who do not have the app will be given a chance to learn
more about it and install it.

that's cool.
what is better then now - attract existing/new users to the info page
or canvas page?
(since canvas page url is sometimes hard to detect)

it will be cool also to do vice a versa: if a user lands on the canvas
page and the app is not installed - she is redirected to the info
page?
maybe I'm missing something - this behaviour has changed several times
already.

another question - where does activity story link (via ... ) redirect
now?

thanks

[orkut-developer] Re: NEWS: AppInfo page now smartly redirects to Canvas page

2010-12-11 Thread Bruno Oliveira
It's best to attract users to the app info page.
That way they will be correctly redirected.

Remember that applications still have a guest mode, which happens when
a user who does not have the app views it on someone else's profile (he
can arrive there through the via link, for instance). That's what you
get when you land in the canvas view of an app on someone else's
profile and you don't have it installed.

The recommended practice is that applications should have a guest mode
in which the user can get a feel for the application without installing
it. Applications must not redirect guest users from Canvas Page to the
App Info page. Users who like the app in guest mode should install it
using the Add App button on the frame (the app can help by pointing
it out to the user, but the app must not force him to click it).

so activity via link redirects to app canvas, is this correct?
