[osol-discuss] ConsoleKit/gdm not detecting Xvnc failure
Hi, I'm using snv_134 and I've managed to get the VNC 'display' working nicely within ConsoleKit, but I have noticed that if Xvnc dies (which it does if you hit the shift-key bug) then it doesn't get restarted. If I disable and then re-enable consolekit then it starts back up again. I can't see anything in any logs that might help. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? BTW -- with a completely standard snv_134 build Xvnc doesn't seem to work with console kit because of compiz ... I have added -extension Composite to get everything working. Cheers, Lee. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

You can run scheduled tasks using cron. See the crontab(1M) man page. For example, this entry will make the /export/myscript program run once a day at 8AM local time: 0 8 * * * /export/myscript As for checking whether a directory is empty, it depends on the shell you're using, but one way to check emptiness is with Perl: perl -e 'opendir D, $ARGV[0]; $i++ while (readdir D); print $i\n;' \ directoryname That'll print 2 or less if the directory is empty. -- James Carlson 42.703N 71.076W carls...@workingcode.com ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

Re: [osol-discuss] Solaris 10 - no longer free
I'll just reply here for clarity purposes. So after day 90, does Oracle Solaris 10 stop working or hit some limited-feature usage activation?!? Is Oracle saying to stop using Solaris 10 after 90 days or else we get fined?!? The two tracks, OpenSolaris and Solaris 10, are not affected the same way. OpenSolaris is an open source community-involved project. Solaris 10 is a closed source production 'competitively enterprise-marketed' commercial product. Not everything in the realms of OpenSolaris-based projects will make their way into the final Oracle Solaris product. Some parts of Solaris 10 were dropped from the official binary OpenSoalris-based distros. How they are looked at and supported are a bit different as well as licenses. I'd expect bigger corporations with large server deployments to pay for 24x7 or even 12x5 Solaris 10 technical web/phone support - as doing it for free does not make good business sense. The license evolves somewhat around that subject matter. Now, I'd ring a very large bell if Oracle Solaris 10 downloads were stopped and you had to pay for the downloads. I'd ring it louder if Oracle support forums and such became a paid service. But the community has a WEALTH of professional service consultants, Oracle partners, engineers, developers, analysts, and business people to resolve the majority of issues dealing with Solaris 10 - either for free or for a small fee. As long as you can download and access your copy of Solaris 10 - why rock the boat harder due to the current 90-day license?!? Maybe what Oracle should have said is, don't call us if you are using Oracle Solaris 10 in a commercial environment and don't want to pay us for major break/fix technical support after your initial 90-day usage of it. The main issue was dealing with civil discussion and Solaris 10 licensing. The non-civil discussion spawned a larger forked debate. As for the licensing, I'll try to point out that Oracle's statement means moreso that after 90-days you'll pay for Oracle's support - mainly if you are using Solaris 10 for commercial use and expect Oracle to 'officially' help you. Other like-minded corporations usually give you 30-90 days of free technical support and usage, then tell you that continued usage requires PAID technical break/fix and phone support. Some companies give you a year of a free support subscription if you got the product through an OEM or VAR. But, if you call them with some MAJOR break/fix issue and tie up their help desk personnel, then they ask for you to pay for that support. So again, download your copy of Solaris 10 10/09 ASAP if you don't already have it and pay for whatever =90 day warranty or technical support you need. Otherwise, you have other options to utilize for your work or hobbist environment. Re: [osol-discuss] Solaris 10 - no longer free
None of Sun's or Oracle's actual products has real license keys build into the software. So, it will not stop nor be feature-reduced! You only will no longer be allowed to used it. When or if-at-all Oracle might think about sueing you, is totally unclear... They are entiteld to do so, but Oracle would need a real business case to really try to fine you... My guess... And the removal of software-components from Solaris 10, and not putting those into OpenSolaris were license issues. All DT stuff is based on Motif, which is not free, nor opensource. Therefore they needed to be removed, as an example. Matthias You (ken mays) wrote: I'll just reply here for clarity purposes. Re: [osol-discuss] Need a comprehensive subversion tutorial
jayson jamandra wrote: Good day guys. I want to know if there are any step by step tutorials in implementing/installing/using subversion in opensolaris. What i need is from installation up to usage of subversion. thanks. BTW, Iam using tomcat server. Frankly, it's no different than using it on Linux, other than the method of installation. OpenSolaris uses the 'pkg' format, rather than the common *.deb or *.rpm formats found in most linux distros, to distribute subversion. You can install subversion using the 'packagemanager' GUI, which will install it from the main software repositories. Other than the method of installation, it is used in the normal manner. Re: [osol-discuss] A statement for defending OpenSolaris
Yeah... replacing the legally encumbered bits over time isn't that much of a stretch. What matters is that the kernel is open-source (which is the heart of the OS and is the part that makes it stand out apart from Linux and BSD). Re: [osol-discuss] An idea for spreading the word
If you are a BSD fan, why are you lurking here, instead of spending time on BSD forums, where you might stand a chance of making a useful contribution? It's well known that there are BSD zealots out there who feel threatened by OpenSolaris and so make a habit of belittling it, so you are not providing anyone with any new information with your posts. On the Arch Linux forums, for example, of all OS fanboys, the BSD'ers have the reputation of being the most fanatical. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
Re: [osol-discuss] An idea for spreading the word
Will... I did not submit any real details yet. I just submitted a brief summary stating an idea of what I am to give a talk on. I can always narrow the focus and (if accepted) I will present more details at a later time, however I was limited to 500 characters and I wanted to give a good idea of what platform I was shooting for... Brief Description: OpenSolaris is a cutting edge operating system from Oracle and the community that brings the Solaris OS into the modern era with new technologies. ZFS, DTrace and Crossbow are a few of the excellent OpenSolaris technologies that will be brought to light as well as a brief overview of the project and why UNIX is still relevant today, even with Linux being the main player in the desktop and server OS markets. Once it is time to actually work on the presentation itself, I will definitely run it by the community to be sure it is correct. Thanks! Re: [osol-discuss] An idea for spreading the word
IMO, SMF is a HUGE plus for OpenSolaris too, I always mention it when talking about the OS. It really simplifies things after getting your head around the manifests, and it really brings UNIX into the 21st century, it's great to see (Open)Solaris achieving that. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org

Apparently you can't read that I used OpenSolaris since its inception, until recently. It doesn't mean since I don't currently use it that I can't and don't follow the project. And Linux-Branded Zones in particular. From some reason, the official page on the Linux 2.6 brand discusses Ubuntu, even though the same page admits that Ubuntu is mostly broken under Brandz. Arch Linux isn't: as far as I've been able to discover, anything that's broken under Arch in a zone is broken in Linux 2.6 in a zone in general. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org ___ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
