Although of course, unless the EU have finished their investigations

much to say about anything then, either.

They write about Solaris. Does this
statement include OpenSolaris, or do they talk about a
 proprietary Solaris?

You probably mean the marketed and packaged OS distribution based on an
SNV/ON binary release and consolidation as the OpenSolaris project is
considered work in flux to the community.

In the Community we are calling the new Oracle/Sun OS Solaris 11 although
there is no offically 'sworn-in' OS binary release or distribution named as the
Solaris 11 operating system yet.

This is good news:)
Hope they stay committed to their statements.
But it must bring a ROI.
And I am convinced, Oracle is able to make one, out of the
combination: OracleOpensolarisTheirownsparcgear.

Some competition with IBM and Power.
I am so glad that not IBM took over Sun. Mostly they would have had
redundances in their portfolio. IBM would have killed everything, and
probably not AIX in favor of Solaris, and not Power in favor of SPARC,
and not their own DB in favor of MySQL.

With Oracle I am at least very optimistic.

Let us hope they wont lay off too many Sun employees.
All the best!

Sure do hope they look at releasing a mini-me entry-level SPARC box (T3120
where art thou??), i.e. affordable. If folk such as myself learning the ropes
want to play with SPARC the only practical options are some used thing, or very
expensive new units.

You can do that now on the used market, just as you mentioned. I saw a 280R
with a pair of 1.2GHz CPUs today for $150.

I am dangerously close to deploying an 8-way v40z for my home server right now.
Yes it's AMD, but still Sun gear.

As for Oracle, this is flat brilliant. My employer is a couple years into the
move away from Solaris to AIX. I wonder how long that strategic decision will
last.

Every Oracle license renewal has now become a lead for Sun, complete with
contact names and insight into a company's budget and purchase process.

Brilliant.

I rarely quote him, but this time I do:

“It goes to 11″
June 2nd, 2009

I’m reading the news from CommunityOne yesterday, and it seems most
people missed what I think was the biggest news: That John Fowler
revealed that OpenSolaris 2009.06 is “the preview release of the next
major release of Solaris”. (Yes, I and others have suggested this
would be the path forward for Solaris—eventually—but this, to my
knowledge, is the first time it’s been “official”.)
