Re: [osol-help] GRUB problem

2011-08-02 Thread Edward Martinez
hello everybody,

I have installed opensolaris 2009.06 with windows 7
ultimate x64 and ubuntu 11.04 x64 as i wanted to
triple boot my system. I installed windows first
followed by ubuntu on an extended partition and
finally installed opensolaris on primary partition
after windows. Now I'm able to boot windows and
opensolaris but not ubuntu. Opensolaris's GRUB did
not write an entry for ubuntu which now i have to
write manually. I have attached the ubuntu's GRUB
configuration file grub.cng with this
post. please help me

This may help. it's a three part article explaining how to triple boot
opensolaris.
the bottom of the article shows how to edit grub when triple booting.

Re: [osol-help] [osol-discuss] advise on opensolaris version to be used

2011-02-02 Thread Edward Martinez
I will try to play with OpenSolaris version 0906 for a while and maybe
later check out Solaris 11 Express and other OpenSolaris based distros.

I think the front page should notify new users their won't be any more
opensolaris binary distro releases.

opensolaris 2010.05 was the last unsupported release, but you need to upgrade
to it from the IPS repos. just install opensolaris snv134, change the repos
to http://pkg.opensolaris.org/release; then upgrade to opensolaris 2010.05.

Re: [osol-help] Help I'm all at sea with osol installation

2010-11-20 Thread Edward Martinez
OK I've got my hands on a tasty ultra45, the only
problem is its got no DVD drive , cable or tray.
I tried to make an adapter but I couldn't get the
pinouts for the sun 50way IDE cable.
I'm trying now to do a netboot of the 0906 iso using
a tftp server.

I've setup a tftp server on a windows laptop, named
the iso using the host id

I've connected the laptop and sparc using a crossover
network lead and set the PC to a static IP of
192.168.1.1

I've configured the network-boot arguments on the
sparc to
host-ip=192.168.1.2,hostname=danger,file=tftp://192.16
8.1.1/osol-0906-ai-sparc.iso
the sparc connects, negotiates to 100fdx then starts
to download the file. Part way through the file it
bombs out with some bus error that I've seen some
other people asking about.
ERROR: /packages/obp-tftp: Last Trap: Fast Data
Access MMU Miss
I'm sure its not a hardware fault, its almost as if
I've forgotten to set something up.

Baring in mind although I've had a few sparcs before,
I'm completely unfamiliar with network boots and
installs, and not that knowledable about solaris in
general. Please can someone help me as I'm completely
at sea and have no idea how to progress further.
Thanks loads
M

Hi,

It sounds like it is having a Bus and Memory Management Unit problem,
according to this from princeton:
Bus Error
A bus error is issued to the processor when it references a location that
cannot be accessed.

* MMU: (Memory Management Unit: can be hardware or software, but frequently
are system board problems.)

Re: [osol-help] Unable to boot Linux from OSolaris 2009.06 b134

2010-11-12 Thread Edward Martinez
Hi,

I have openSolaris installed on sda4 alongside
several linux on sda2 (extended), PC-BSD on sda3 and
Windows 7 on sda1. In addition I have 4 more Linux on
sdc2 (extended). During Solaris install I used grub
to hide sda2 in order to hide swap and stuff. Solaris
installed its GRUB on MBR, I used GRUB CD to unhide
sda2 post install. Solaris GRUB picked up Windows and
went on commenting several ext4 partitions on sdc2. I
edited the /rpool/boot/grub/menu.lst and added sda2
and sdc2 Linux titles in it.

why don't you use VirtualBox to run all those OS as guest?

Re: [osol-help] Opinions and how to move forward?

2010-10-05 Thread Edward Martinez

More thoughts please! :)

Or you could continue using eiher Opensolaris 2009.06 or snv_b134 until Oracle
release what suppose to be Opensolaris replacement Solaris 11 Express at the
end of the year, and it is mention, that it might include ZFS data
encryption, not seen anywhere else until Oracle releases the code, probably
here at Opensolaris home page after solaris 11 ships out.

ZFS gains data encryption
http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/ZFS-gains-data-encryption-1101860.html
(slow site to load)

PS it was mention by an oracle official that solaris will remain opensource and
only the brand name opensolaris was being retired in favor of solaris 11. and
oracle will continue working with opensolaris :-)

quote:
Dan Roberts, Director of Solaris Product Management surprised attendees by
stating that the OpenSolaris brand was going away. Although the name itself
won’t continue, the source code will continue to be open and available to the
developer community.

What Oracle is doing here, he said, is simplifying its naming conventions. “We
are going to focus everything around Solaris 11 to keep it simple,” said
Roberts. “There will no longer be a separate brand called OpenSolaris.”

He stressed that Oracle will continue to work with the Linux community on the
open-source version of OpenSolaris, as well as Oracle Linux and its Red Hat
Compatible Linux. “While we have changed the way we will work with the
community, Solaris will remain open source and the source code will be made
available to customers.”

2010-08-09 Thread Edward Martinez
interesting...seems the howto is working for me.

After i change my repos from release to dev I installed SUNWipkg package
then I simply followed directions substituting the snv_129 to snv_117( not
117a):

pkg install SUNWipkg
beadm create snv_117
beadm mount snv_117 /mnt
pkg contents -m entire | more
pkg list -avf entire
pkg -R /mnt install ent...@0.5.11,5.11-0.117

after creating plan it began to download and that is where i'm at:

DOWNLOADPKGS FILES XFER (MB)

i'll keep in touch if i was able to finish the process

i spoke too soon, it failed. after it installed the update presumably snv_117.
it return bunch of errors, i thought they were nothing to worry about so, i
continued with the rest of the howto after i rebooted, snv_117 would not boot.

CPU can be a problem
on a AMD cpu system i tried installing opensolaris 2009.06 and b134 but
during boot my screen would get flooded with error and i was not able to
install it:

apic error interrupt on cpu 0 status 0 = 0, status 1 =4

i had to file a bug report and with help from kerry shu and others, we were
able to determined my AMD athlon 2 x2 240 had a bug known errata #373 of
AMD Family 10h Processors that it only affected solaris, so now i only buy
intel and no more problems
