Potentially corrupted images are bad; depending on the affected data it might only be diagnosed some time after installation, so IMO the fix is needed. Sure but there is a (potentially hefty) performance impact. Well, do you want fast or working/consistent images? Only a minor issue: I'd like to see it have a check for the qemu version, and only then kick in. That dosn't work as $distro may have a qemu 2.0.x that has the fix backported. That's why the workarounds group was created. You specify the safe default and if a distributor knows it's package is safe it can alter the default. Oh, okay... with the safe default being derived from the qemu version ;) At some point you can invert that or remove the option altogether. Ah, yes, I know it, I’m tracking that effort to benchmark and shed some numbers over the OVS+OF vs OVS+veths+LB+iptables stateful firewalling/security groups. I guess also routing namespaceless router benchmarking would make sense too. My initial reaction is that we can implement security groups as another action in the ACL table that is similar to allow but in addition permits reciprocal inbound traffic. Does that sound sufficient to you? Yes, having fine grained allows (matching on protocols, ports, and remote ips would satisfy the neutron use case). Also we use connection tracking to allow reciprocal inbound traffic via ESTABLISHED/RELATED, any equivalent solution would do. For reference, our SG implementation, currently is able to match on combinations of: * direction: ingress/egress * protocol: icmp/tcp/udp/raw number * port_range: min-max (it’s always dst) * L2 packet ethertype: IPv4, IPv6, etc... * remote_ip_prefix: as a CIDR or* remote_group_id (to reference all other IPs in a certain group) All of them assume connection tracking so known connection packets will go the other way around. Is the exponential explosion due to cross-producting, that is, because you have, say, n1 source addresses and n2 destination addresses and so you need n1*n2 flows to specify all the combinations? We aim to solve that in OVN by giving the CMS direct support for more sophisticated matching rules, so that it can say something like: ip.src in {a, b, c, ...} ip.dst in {d, e, f, ...} (tcp.src in {80, 443, 8080} || tcp.dst in {80, 443, 8080}) That sounds good and very flexible. and let OVN implement it in OVS via the conjunctive match feature recently added, which is like a set membership match but more powerful. Hmm, where can I find examples about that feature, sounds interesting. It might still be nice to support lists of IPs (or whatever), since these lists could still recur in a number of circumstances, but my guess is that this will help a lot even without that. As afar as I understood, given the way megaflows resolve rules via hashes even if we had lots of rules with different ip addresses, that would be very fast, probably as fast or more than our current ipset solution. The only caveat would be having to update lots of flow rules when a port goes in or out of a security group, since you have to go and clear/add the rules to each single port on the same security group (as long as they have 1 rule referencing the sg). Thoughts? This all sounds really good to me Ben. I look forward to seeing the connection tracking code land and some design details on the security groups aspects of OVN published once that happens! Neutron experts, I caught a bug report[1]. Currently, Neutron enable admin to delete default security group. But Neutron doesn’t allow default security group to keep deleted. Neutron regenerates default security group as security group api is called next. I have two questions about the behavior. 1. Why does Neutron regenerate default security group? If default security group is essential, we shouldn’t enable admin to delete it. 2. Why is security group named “default essential? Users may want to change its name. I'd like neutron experts' suggestions. Hmm, had the same issue like three hours ago but no longer now. Either DevStack was updated in the last hour/mins or my fiddling with cwd settings of my ansible scripts did the job, not sure which. If you're running stack.sh not manually but scripted check your environments cwd settings, is my hint. Yes, it looks like a bug that was merged which the gate didn't catch: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/157720/ is the fix (I just pushed it up). Could you share your localrc or local.conf? [openstack-dev] [nova][vmware][ironic] Configuring active/passive HA Nova compute
Gary Kotton came across a doozy of a bug recently: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/1419785 In short, when you start a Nova compute, it will query the driver for instances and compare that against the expected host of the the instance according to the DB. If the driver is reporting an instance the DB thinks is on a different host, it assumes the instance was evacuated while Nova compute was down, and deletes it on the hypervisor. However, Gary found that you trigger this when starting up a backup HA node which has a different `host` config setting. i.e. You fail over, and the first thing it does is delete all your instances. Gary and I both agree on a couple of things: 1. Deleting all your instances is bad 2. HA nova compute is highly desirable for some drivers We disagree on the approach to fixing it, though. Gary posted this: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/154029/ I've already outlined my objections to this approach elsewhere, but to summarise I think this fixes 1 symptom of a design problem, and leaves the rest untouched. If the value of nova compute's `host` changes, then the assumption that instances associated with that compute can be identified by the value of instance.host becomes invalid. This assumption is pervasive, so it breaks a lot of stuff. The worst one is _destroy_evacuated_instances(), which Gary found, but if you scan nova/compute/manager for the string 'self.host' you'll find lots of them. For example, all the periodic tasks are broken, including image cache management, and the state of ResourceTracker will be unusual. Worse, whenever a new instance is created it will have a different value of instance.host, so instances running on a single hypervisor will become partitioned based on which nova compute was used to create them. In short, the system may appear to function superficially, but it's unsupportable. I had an alternative idea. The current assumption is that the `host` managing a single hypervisor never changes. If we break that assumption, we break Nova, so we could assert it at startup and refuse to start if it's violated. I posted this VMware-specific POC: https://review.openstack.org/#/c/154907/ However, I think I've had a better idea. Nova creates ComputeNode objects for its current configuration at startup which, amongst other things, are a map of host:hypervisor_hostname. We could assert when creating a ComputeNode that hypervisor_hostname is not already associated with a different host, and refuse to start if it is. We would give an appropriate error message explaining that this is a misconfiguration. This would prevent the user from hitting any of the associated problems, including the deletion of all their instances. We can still do active/passive HA! If we configure both nodes in the active/passive cluster identically, including with the same value of `host`, I don't see why this shouldn't work today. I don't even think the configuration is onerous. All we would be doing is preventing the user from accidentally running a misconfigured HA which leads to inconsistent state, and will eventually require manual cleanup. We would still have to be careful that we don't bring up both nova computes simultaneously. The VMware driver, at least, has hardcoded assumptions that it is the only writer in certain circumstances. That problem would have to be handled separately, perhaps at the messaging layer. Oleg, The problem with IP addresses (for all networks but admin-pxe) is that they are not available until deployment is started or /clusters/(?Pcluster_id\d+)/orchestrator/deployment/defaults/ is called. It is not a topic specific to neutronclient. We need more consistent versioning policy on client releases. Assuming x.y.z as version number, just incrementing z should keep backward compat. For a client release for a new cycle (like this), it is better to bump at least y version. By doing so, client release compatible with some stable releases can be defined as x.(y+1) and we can reserve version numbers for important fixes. (I believe the version cap for icehouse 2.4 is expected to a policy like this). Oslo isn't the only project managing libraries used by more than one other team any more. It never really was, if you consider the clients, but we have PyCADF and various middleware and other things now, too. We can base our policies on what we've learned from Oslo, but we need to apply them to *all* libraries, no matter which team manages them. My mistake, you are correct. I was incorrectly using oslo as a shorthand for all openstack libraries. service. And we would still need a story around what to do with stable branches, how do we make sure new libraries don't break stable branches -- which in turn can break master via grenade and other jobs. I'm comfortable using simple caps based on minor number increments for stable branches. New libraries won't end up in the stable branches unless they are a patch release. We can set up test jobs for stable branches of libraries to run tempest just like we do against master, but using all stable branch versions of the source files (AFAIK, we don't have a job like that now, but I could be wrong). In general I agree, this is the right way forward for openstack libraries. But as made clear this week, we will have to be a little more careful about what is a valid patch release. I'm less confident that we have identified all of the issues with more limited pins, so I'm reluctant to back that approach for now. That may be an excess of caution on my part, though. Joe wanted requirements.txt to be the pinned requirements computed from the list of all global requirements that work together. Pinning to a single version works in our gate, but makes installing everything else together *outside* of the gate harder because if the projects don't all sync all requirements changes pretty much at the same time they won't be compatible. Adam suggested leaving requirements.txt alone and creating a different list of pinned requirements that is *only* used in our gate. That way we still get the pinning for our gate, and the values are computed from the requirements used in the projects but they aren't propagated back out to the projects in a way that breaks their PyPI or distro packages. I don't want the *ED states to be optional because that puts the onus on the developer that needs the *ED state, to add it in (assuming they are aware that this is possible) and put in whatever plumbing might be needed. Which may mean that they'd have to modify code in another driver, that didn't need *ED in the first place. Oslo isn't the only project managing libraries used by more than one other team any more. It never really was, if you consider the clients, but we have PyCADF and various middleware and other things now, too. We can base our policies on what we've learned from Oslo, but we need to apply them to *all* libraries, no matter which team manages them. My mistake, you are correct. I was incorrectly using oslo as a shorthand for all openstack libraries. Yeah, I've been doing it, too, but the thing with neutronclient today made me realize we shouldn't. :-) service. And we would still need a story around what to do with stable branches, how do we make sure new libraries don't break stable branches -- which in turn can break master via grenade and other jobs. I'm comfortable using simple caps based on minor number increments for stable branches. New libraries won't end up in the stable branches unless they are a patch release. We can set up test jobs for stable branches of libraries to run tempest just like we do against master, but using all stable branch versions of the source files (AFAIK, we don't have a job like that now, but I could be wrong). In general I agree, this is the right way forward for openstack libraries. But as made clear this week, we will have to be a little more careful about what is a valid patch release. Sure. With caps in place, and incrementing the minor version at the start of each cycle, I think the issues that come up can be minimized though. I'm less confident that we have identified all of the issues with more limited pins, so I'm reluctant to back that approach for now. That may be an excess of caution on my part, though. Joe wanted requirements.txt to be the pinned requirements computed from the list of all global requirements that work together. Pinning to a single version works in our gate, but makes installing everything else together *outside* of the gate harder because if the projects don't all sync all requirements changes pretty much at the same time they won't be compatible. So I have a working prototype for micro-states feature https://review.openstack.org/#/c/124205 and is been already out for review for quite some time now; if it gets the needed attention then it should definitely be able to make it to K-3. I see lot of features that are planned for K-3 still in Started or Needs code review so I thought it would be wise to request you for the same. Please let me know your thoughts regarding the same. [openstack-dev] [Neutron] HTTP-based switch config/mgmt with API control
Howdy folks. Does anyone know of any open source projects that facilitate managing switches from within a browser (not CLI)? I know there are mechanism drivers today that allow the ML2 plug-in to connect directly to a switch via SSH and add/remove VLAN's, I'm wondering if this has been implemented somewhere where it can be done within a browser or with some guts governed by some kind of API. We are wondering if we need to analyze how Neutron goes about this and create something from scratch or if we can build upon the efforts of others. Hi Slawek, During the Kilo development cycle the repositories of the three services - FWaaS, LBaaS, VPNaaS, have split from the main neutron repo. The pointers I posted were from this split repo. What you are referring to is the Juno version of the code (during which all the code was in one Neutron repo). FWaaS driver behavior is same in both cases, so it really depends on which OpenStack release you want to work with. Hope that clarifies. Thanks, ~Sumit. Hello, Thx guys. Now it is clear for me :) One more question. I saw that in this service plugin there is hardcoded quota 1 firewall per tenant. Do you know why it is so limited? Is there any important reason for that? And second thing. As there is only one firewall per tenant so all rules from it will be applied on all routers (L3 agents) from this tenant and for all tenant networks, am I right? If yes, how it is solved to set firewall rules when for example new router is created? L3 agent is asking about rules via rpc or FwaaS is sending such notification to L3 agent? Incrementing the minor version for the first release in a cycle automatically puts the new release outside of the range of versions used by the stable branches, and leaves the patch version series open for actual bug fixes that need to be back-ported in clients and other libraries. Version numbers are free, and we can easily get more of them. :-) That SemVer policy document is not exactly a page turner, and does get a bit complicated in some of the interpretations of edge cases. Pinning to a single version works in our gate, but makes installing everything else together *outside* of the gate harder because if the projects don't all sync all requirements changes pretty much at the same time they won't be compatible. Adam suggested leaving requirements.txt alone and creating a different list of pinned requirements that is *only* used in our gate. That way we still get the pinning for our gate, and the values are computed from the requirements used in the projects but they aren't propagated back out to the projects in a way that breaks their PyPI or distro packages. Another benefit of Adam's proposal is that we would only need to keep the list of pins in the global requirements repository, so we would have fewer tooling changes to make. I'm working on the external devstack plugin for neutron-lbaas and found that it was leaving behind stale ip network namespaces after running clean.sh. Comparing to unstack.sh, which calls run_phase unstack I saw that clean.sh was not calling run_phase clean, and thus my cleanup code wasn't running. There'd be some tweaks to the tooling but we'd still be doing the same fundamental thing (installing everything openstack together) except using a strict set of dependencies that we know wont break each other when that happens. This would help tremendously with testing around global-requirements, too. Currently, a local devstack run today likely produces a set dependency different than what was tested by jenkins on the last change to global-requirements. I can report that we do use this option (‘global' setting.) We have to enforce name uniqueness for instances’ integration with some external systems (namely AD and Spacewalk) which require unique naming. However, we also do some external name validation which I think effectively enforces uniqueness as well. It seems to me that the blueprint serial-ports[1] didn't implement everything which was described in its spec. If one of you could have a look at the following examples and help me to understand if these observations are right/wrong that would be great. Example 1: The flavor provides the extra_spec hw:serial_port_count and the image the property hw_serial_port_count. This is used to decide how many serial devices (with different ports) should be defined for an instance. But the libvirt driver returns always only the *first* defined port (see method get_serial_console [2]). I didn't find anything in the code which uses the other defined ports. Example 2: If a user is already connected, then reject the attempt of a second user to access the console, but have an API to forceably disconnect an existing session. This would be particularly important to cope with hung sessions where the client network went away before the console was cleanly closed. [1] I couldn't find the described API. If there is a hung session one cannot gracefully recover from that. This could lead to a bad UX in horizons serial console client implementation[3]. Option “5” just has, check the pid, raise / catch an exception. IMO the two options are: “5”, check the pid and recover or “3” make it a hard failure. And I don't think we want the database library doing anything with this case at all. Recovery code is tricky, and often prevents valid use cases (perhaps the parent *meant* for the child to reuse the open connection and isn't going to continue using it so there won't be a conflict). The bug here is in the way the application, using Oslo's service module, is forking. We should fix the service module to make it possible to fork correctly, and to have that be the default behavior. The db library shouldn't be concerned with whether or not it's in a forked process -- that's not its job. But if we are doing that we should just whole hog give up on the idea that OpenStack can be run all together in a single environment, and just double down on the devstack venv work instead. It'd be interesting to see what a distribution (canonical, redhat...) would think about this movement. I know yahoo! has been looking into it for similar reasons (but we are more flexibly then I think a packager such as canonical/redhat/debian/... would/culd be). With a move to venv's that seems like it would just offload the work to find the set of dependencies that work together (in a single-install) to packagers instead. If we adopt the former (i.e. ryu goes in, ovs-ofctl goes out), then option a) makes sense to me, but I am not sure how happy deployers, and packagers are going to be welcoming this approach. There's already too much going on in Kilo right now :) Even if we leave both options available, packagers wouldn't avoid shipping ryu, for if the option is present in the code and can be controlled from config files, then we should assume some users will switch implementations, and we don't want to break them. If we adopt the latter, then I think it's desirable to have two separate configurations with which we test the agent. This means that we'll have a new job (besides the existing ones) that runs the agent with ryu instead of ovs-ofctl. This means that option d) is the viable one, where DevStack will have to install the dependency based on some configuration variable that is determined by the openstack-infra project definition. So no more nova-assisted-snap tests. 2) We also are increasing the timeout of our job in patch ( https://review.openstack.org/#/c/157835/1 ) so that we can get a full run without timeouts to do a good analysis of the logs (logs are not posted if the job times out) Can you please re-enable our job, so that we can confirm that disabling online snap TCs is helping the issue, which if it does, can help us narrow down the issue. Somewhere around 165 minutes in (18:47) you can see the kernel out-of-memory killer starts to kick in and kill httpd and mysqld processes according to the syslog. Hopefully this is enough additional detail to get you a start at finding the root cause so that we can reenable your job. Let me know if there's anything else you need for this. And we would still need a story around what to do with stable branches, how do we make sure new libraries don't break stable branches -- which in turn can break master via grenade and other jobs. Joe wanted requirements.txt to be the pinned requirements computed from the list of all global requirements that work together. Pinning to a single version works in our gate, but makes installing everything else together *outside* of the gate harder because if the projects don't all sync all requirements changes pretty much at the same time they won't be compatible. Adam suggested leaving requirements.txt alone and creating a different list of pinned requirements that is *only* used in our gate. That way we still get the pinning for our gate, and the values are computed from the requirements used in the projects but they aren't propagated back out to the projects in a way that breaks their PyPI or distro packages. Another benefit of Adam's proposal is that we would only need to keep the list of pins in the global requirements repository, so we would have fewer tooling changes to make. Hi all, this is a reflection of the discussion I just had on #openstack-infra; it's about (re-)using the central CI infrastructure for our Open-Source DRBD driver too. The current status is: * The DRBD driver is already in Cinder, so DRBD-replicated Cinder storage using iSCSI to the hypervisors does work out-of-the-box. * The Nova-parts didn't make it in for Kilo; we'll try to get them into L. * I've got a lib/backends/drbd for devstack, that together with a matching local.conf can set up a node - at least for a limited set of distributions (as DRBD needs a kernel module, Ubuntu/Debian via DKMS are the easy way). [Please note that package installation is not yet done in this script yet - I'm not sure whether I can/may/should simply add an apt-repository.] Now, clarkb told me about two caveats: «Yup, so the two things I will start with is that multinode testing is still really rudimentary, we only just got tempest sort of working with it. So I might suggest running on a single node first to get the general thing working. The other thing is that we don't have the zuul code to vote with a different account deployed/merged yet. So initially you could run your job but it wouldn't vote against, say, cinder.» Cinder has a deadline for CI: March 19th; upon relaying that fact (resp. nearly correct date) clarkb said «thats about 3 weeks... probably at least for the zuul thing.» So, actually it's nearly 4 weeks, let's hope that it all works out. Actually, the multi-node testing will only be needed when we get the Nova parts in, because then it would make sense to test (Nova) via both iSCSI and the DRBD transport; for Cinder CI a single-node setup is sufficient. My remaining questions are: * Is it possible to have our driver tested via the common infrastructure? * Is it okay to setup another apt-repository during the devstack run, to install the needed packages? I'm not sure whether our servers would simply be accessible, some firewall or filtering proxy could break such things easily. * Apart from the cinder-backend script in devstack (which I'll have to finish first, see eg. package installation), is any other information needed from us? Containerizing OpenStack services looks like a great solution to the challenge of upgrades, and pace of the work you and others on the Kolla team have kept up is impressive. Oslo isn't the only project managing libraries used by more than one other team any more. It never really was, if you consider the clients, but we have PyCADF and various middleware and other things now, too. We can base our policies on what we've learned from Oslo, but we need to apply them to *all* libraries, no matter which team manages them. service. I'm comfortable using simple caps based on minor number increments for stable branches. New libraries won't end up in the stable branches unless they are a patch release. I'm less confident that we have identified all of the issues with more limited pins, so I'm reluctant to back that approach for now. That may be an excess of caution on my part, though. Joe wanted requirements.txt to be the pinned requirements computed from the list of all global requirements that work together. Pinning to a single version works in our gate, but makes installing everything else together *outside* of the gate harder because if the projects don't all sync all requirements changes pretty much at the same time they won't be compatible. Adam suggested leaving requirements.txt alone and creating a different list of pinned requirements that is *only* used in our gate. That way we still get the pinning for our gate, and the values are computed from the requirements used in the projects but they aren't propagated back out to the projects in a way that breaks their PyPI or distro packages. Another benefit of Adam's proposal is that we would only need to keep the list of pins in the global requirements repository, so we would have fewer tooling changes to make. First off, do we need this config variable? Is anybody actually using it? I suspect the answer's going to be yes, but it would be extremely convenient if it's not. Assuming this configurability is required, is there any way we can instead use it to control a unique constraint in the db at service startup? This would be something akin to a db migration. How do we manage those? Related to the above, I'm not 100% clear on which services run this code. Is it possible for different services to have a different configuration of this variable, and does that make sense? If so, that would preclude a unique constraint in the db.
