I assume you are saying install the 32bit version of OpenSuse on a 64bit

I guess this would mean no double lib files and everything would be

sounds like the way to go at this point. Is there any advantage or

[opensuse] Need advice on upgrading to 64bit computer

2007-09-23 Thread Terry Eck

I'm currently using and AMD Athlon 1.4MHz computer.
Planning on upgrading to a more modern motherboard
and cpu. Currently leaning toward AMD but I'm a little
confused thus the following questions maybe someone
can answer.

1) AM2 vs 939 socket, I leaning towards the AM2
2) Is Dual-Core worth the extra money, leaning towards
   Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 5000+
3) Gigabyte, Asus or DFI motherboard,
Want 2 IDE interfaces (4 drives)
   Current choices are

   ASUS M2N-E SLI
   Gigabyte GA-M44SLI-S4
   DFI NF Ultra II-M2
All 3 boards have at least 1 com port (required)
The ASUS has only one IDE interface (could live with
this if Asus is the better board.
4) Finally, what are pro/cons for 32 bit or 64 bit of
opensuse on a 64 bit computer.

Thanks for any advice

As a side note, I would like to replace zmd with the old YOU updater

[opensuse] EULA Required for Updated OpenSuSE 10.2 Kernel Patch

I never thought I'd see the day when I'd be required to agree to a MS EULA!

Is this some kind of early April Fools Day joke?

My HP LaserJet 1012 (USB) printer stopped.

The Initializing Printer Configuration is at the Check database of printers

A small window with the message:

Building database of drivers...
Shows 4% and has been that way for at least 45 minutes.

I'll wait a couple of hours. The program y2base is using 80-99% of the

If anyone can give me a clue as to what to do next

Terry,

I think that is a CRC error on your ide cable. ie. Your disk is
reading the data fine, but in the process of sending it to the
controller it is developing a problem. I find that bad IDE cables can
cause this problem more often than not. In particular ATA133 is only
speced to work on flat cables with a max. length of 18 inches. In
general I see 2ft cables used a lot and also those round cables look
cool and help with airflow, but they are not as good electrically as
the flat cables.

Greg

Just so happens I have those round ide cables. I also have two ide
drives hda and hdb.
hda is 80Gb Western Digital while hdb is 160Gb Maxtor. I'll try
replacing the ide
cables and also place the 160Gb drive on ide2 (hde). Hope this works and
solves the

problem.

I do have SMART set on in the BIOS along with smartd running. The command
smartctl -H /dev/hda reports:
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

I had a similar problem with my hard drives and the cpu running wild.
Turns out it
was a loose connector on the hard drive. I thought the drive was going
bad. I just reset

the ide cable and everything has been OK. May or may not be related.
