Re: [opensuse] Does openSUSE loses ClearType functionality due to Novell-Microsoft patent deal ?

2007-04-10 Thread Alexey Eremenko

I was reading, but it seems that the bug was closed by Novell :( from
public view.
I speak about: [Bug 259718] Sub-pixel antialising does not work when
set from KDE Control Center. You know it's pretty difficult to read
closed information.

Well, the later link:
http://www.osnews.com/story.php/17662/OpenSUSE-Hobbled-by-Microsoft-Patents
Proves that it has nothing to do with Novell-MS deal.

But, can't this patents be invalidated ? I think 3D games (and their
fonts) and nVidia had SuperSampling AntiAliasing prior to Microsoft's
ClearType. Novell can try to build a case for this...

The articles about this matter are absolutely bullshit and have no
relation with reality.

All mayor distributions compiles freetype2 without the offending
"subpixel antialiasing" MS patented code, this is nothing new or
exclusive to openSUSE.

The persons who wrote this kind of crap in slashdot or similar sites has
no clue whatosever about the topic and they think the Novell/MS deal
means we can start making openSUSE a legal minefield.

let make it more clear...

1. MS did **not** (get this into your head once for all damn it !!)
granted a patent license to Novell, but protection to **novell 's
customers** ( gee.. is **that** hard to understand ?? I wonder..)

2. openSUSE as always (even more now) should be clear of legal problems,
this articles are based in the misconception (f.e comments of trolls
like Bruce Perens et all) that the novell/MS deal permit us to do
whatever we want with the "supposed" "IP" of MS.

3. software patents are bad, but they exists, that's the awful truth :-(
and we should deal with that in any or other way in the same way the
rest of the linux universe does.

4. unfortunately, novell has marked the bug report as Novell-Only, this
is of course not "open" discussion in anyway, but may be better than a
bug report filled with a whole bunch of non-sensical comments or assertions.

argh, the level of stupidity and ignorance from both writers and readers
that believes on this articles is becoming very annoying **sigh**.

/me shakes head.

Protection from a what? I understand this as protection from not suing
SUSE for MS patents, which equals patent license grant.

Protection for both Novell and MS *CUSTOMERS* but NOT the companies
themselves.

MS can still sue us over anything, and vice-versa.

Please, it is not stupidity, but it might be ignorance--- and who is to
blame
for that... one hundred zillion people would like to better understand the
M$-Novell deal and instead have received double-talk and insults...

If Novell wanted to educate (rather than lambast and humiliate) they
might do
well to improve their communication channels... stop swearing... and make
sure that all parties understand clearly what is happening and why. If there
is ignorance regarding the Novell business relationship with M$ only Novell
is to blame for that.

The way to understand it clearly is :

1. open the novell website in one tab, and the MS site in other
2. read **literally** what the "agreement" says in both sides, leaving
conspirance/paranoictheories out of your mind.
3. after that, get your own opinion based on the written facts ( all the
rest is FUD)

I agree that Novell should improve his communication abilities with the
outside world, and specially with it's own "community".

Also agree they should not paid for advertisment in a site that is
clearly ignoring us. (even before novell/MS deal) and publishing crap
that helps to promote FUD about their own products.

It protects the customers, not Novell. So, if Novell includes MS
patented technology, MS will not sue the users, but may still sue Novell.

Again, if he wasnt so desperated posting 50 emails per minute, he
could actually have read the list and even found this thread, that
even has an official explanation from aj and jw, with this link:
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2007-04/msg01040.html

And a short PS:

If you think its ok to come here and annoy people about the fucking
deal (and not the novell suits, and not the novell PR, and not the
novell board), but the developers and the users who DID NOT sign any
deal, if you think thats an OK behavior, if you think you are not
being annoying after all this time, if you think that its a normal and
OK position, you can go fuck yourself, and you can go complain about
my lack of politesse in fucking hell.

Dont ask for people to be polite when you already acted like a prick. Period.

You ask to improve communication, clarify the deal? I dont see how
this is improving ths situation: "ah, obviously this cleartype thing
has to do with ms-novell deal, its their fault ahh ahhh
aaahhh "

Okay, here's a short, simple question, no FUD, no spin, nothing:
assuming that we want ClearType functionality, is there any way to

Your choice of words for the "deal" is vulgar but to the point... some
might
compare the Novell-M$ intercourse with fornication... maybe we could agree
to call it the "fornication deal"?

As an aside, with the financial power that M$ can leverage--- well,
size
does matter.

As for annoyance, I was clearly told that this forum is an open forum
(that
very few Novell employees even have time for it) and that the hundreds of
posts that come here every day are from users who care--- from all over the
world. That would include me. My opinions about the fate of Novell,
openSUSE, and the free software movement might be of interest to others
around the world besides you, who also have a stake in free software and
Novell openSUSE. In fact maybe some of them have even stronger opinions
than mine... and have even posted them right here. nuf said.

As for being a prick, I have an observation that spans back over fifty
years.
Whenever I meet someone (males) that have an opposing opinion to mine one of
two things always occurs: (animal traits)

1) conversation in person
When the other person knows that they are in the wrong (either
logically,
morally, or other) they usually resort to the f word, and then a personal
name reference like prick, or other equally intelligent sounding name
depending on their age and extent of English vocabulary. If that doesn't
work, they usually try to hit me in the mouth... frankly people that build
strawmen and knock them down are easier to deal with. :) Needless to say I
have spent some discussion time ducking.

2) internet conversation
In these situations the other person wants to hit me in the
mouth so bad he
can taste it... but uff dah, he can't. That's a good thing... less ducking.
The down side is that he gets to embarrass himself by publically
demonstrating his wanton vocabulary and inability to express himself with
coherent English.

As for complaining about you in hell... well... I sincerely pray for
you that
you do not end up there...

Novell can say all it wants about the deal with "The Company from
Redmond"® and it all does no good when Perens and Moglen open their
mouths to say, "What parts of the deal aren't you telling us about,
Novell Corp?" Then there are all the trol^H^H^H^H nice people like Mark
