Ok, it caught my eye as being a possible password.

And you are right about security, you are definitely entering the better
world!

Unless you log in and out frequently, nothing wrong with a long login
name. The users and groups are actually tracked in the kernel by a
number assigned at the time the user/group is created. You (as root)
can edit the password file manually (with "vipw", a derivative of the
editor "vi") and change the login name, full name, etc.

Or you could create a new user, and copy files over from your existing
home folder, but then you have to "chown" and "chmod" several things.

I'd suggest you get to know "man", and take your time understanding file
permissions and such. (If you are already beyond that, excuse me...)

Try "man vipw", "man vi", and even "man man" for starters...but don't do
anything until you understand the foundation.

Most of all, don't get frustrated.

Thanks for the encouragement. I had written a friend who had done some
computer work for me about an issue I was having and he told me to get
ready for some more hair pulling. Since then I have considered shaving
my head so there wouldn't be anything to pull. :-o I have come to
really like Linux. I like the look and feel (I used to have Redmond as
my splash screen for a grin) and I really like all the security
features, although they do get in the way sometimes. I have to keep
reminding myself -- Windows or Linux, insecurity or security.

I read an article recently where one can buy from Microsoft a
certification for $500 and be able to stick an exploitation rootkit on
Vista machines. Windows or Linux? I don't mind the learning curve of
Linux. I guess I'm a hacker at heart. My wife tells me to leave the
computers alone, especially hers, still I tinker.

No, wda530106 is the user name, I have a different password for the
account. Is it difficult to change the user profile name without
messing things up? Maybe it would be easier at log in, you know, not so
much to type.

I currently write a basic computer column for the non-tech-savvy
computer user for a local weekly newspaper. It's Windows based, but I
am getting ready to proselytize open source software for Windows. I
also see a column on open source operating systems. Nothing too
detailed, just a heads up to what's available.

Thanks again for the welcome. I find the list very helpful and the
members very knowledgeable.

I'm not using profiles to compare my folder, but I wonder if you have
given up a password somehow. Notice Mark's listing shows his user name
"mark", and your listing shows user "wda530106". That seems to me an
awkward user name.

You mentioned a reinstall, did you perhaps inadvertently use your

NP. We were all 'there' at some point or another...

When I first found out about -completion, I was... very impressed...

It literally made me go "wow!"

Now I use it so much, that I sometimes accidentally get 'access denied' with
ssh, because my fingers automatically just type the first couple of
characters in the password, and then hit ...

It's a bit like typing :wq to get out of any editor...

The fingers just do it, and leaves me with a puzzled look on my face as I
try to figure out why it didn't work... :P

Same as what you have. My first file is your bclib and the sRGB file is
your bctests.

Today when I reinstalled opensuse I used the DVD and installed the Adobe
ICC Profiles (Big Mistake). I thought it would be easy to copy the .icc
file that I had to the RGB Profile folder. Little did I realize that it
would be as difficult as it has been.

I very much appreciate the assistance and the time you all have put into
this problem. From the stand point of the initial install the problem
is really not solved. The way I solved it was to delete the profiles I
installed from the DVD. I went to the Adobe web site and downloaded the
tar file, extracted it and installed it using YaST2. After that I did a
right click and copied the file in the RGB Profiles folder.

I still don't understand why the file would be there and then not
there. Maybe I'll never know. Maybe I'll get back to it another time
on another computer, but for now I have use of a needed color profile
and that was my original intent.

So here's the ls -al from the profiles folder:

total 3784
drwxr-xr-x 2 wda530106 users4096 2007-04-01 02:14 .
drwxr-xr-x 34 wda530106 users4096 2007-04-01 02:14 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 wda530106 users 3852820 2005-11-03 06:01
adobe-color-profiles-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
-rw-r--r-- 1 wda530106 users2505 2007-03-31 21:47 gmail-to-outlook.csv
-rw-r--r-- 1 wda530106 users3024 2007-03-31 21:06
sRGB_IEC61966-2-1_noBPC.icc

I just saw why the file didn't exist. I must be blind, illiterate and
stupid. Why I didn't see the "_" after the sRGB the first time I did
the ls -al is beyond me. Boy do I really feel stupid. The panic, in my
ignorance, blinded me from what I should have seen all along.

(Hangs his head in humiliation and mutters) I Hate Computers.

Dwain,

If you don't know about it already, then here's a tip;

Use -completion.

Basically it works like this:

Pressing makes the shell try to complete whatever you're in the
process of writing. This is a very nice feature, which not only saves you
lots of keystrokes, but also 'composes' whatever to be 'syntactically'
correct, including upper/lower case letters and proper escaping of
whitespace etc. ('Syntax' is used here for lack of a better word)

If there are more than one possible way to complete something (like a
filename), then the first will complete as much as it can, and a
second will list the possible choices. In this case, you type the next
letter, and press again... etc... etc...

So - instead of trying to write everything out with keystrokes, you should
let the shell help you figure it out. Because the shell 'knows' how stuff
(like paths/filenames) should be written.

Now, about your *actual* problem a couple of things spring to mind:

Is "/home/my directory/" in fact a real pathname? My guess would be that it
really would be something like "/home/dwain/".

Looking at the file list at
http://www.novell.com/products/linuxpackages/suselinux/adobeiccprofiles.html
tells me that the target folder *does* indeed contain whitespaces, which
must be escaped.

I'd suggest you verify both source and destination, using 'ls -l' and
completion first, and *then* do your 'cp'.

... please post the output from the following command once you are in
the
profiles directory:

ls -al

It will look something like this:

drwxr-xr-x 2 mark users 192 2006-10-01 00:35 .

To rename the file use:

mv \'sRGBIEC61966-2-1_noBPC.icc sRGBIEC61966-2-1_noBPC.icc

That will get rid of the single quote in the name.

cp \'sRGBIEC61966-2-1_noBPC.icc /home/whatever/the/target/is/

Is the file name sRGBIEC61966-2-1_noBPC.icc without leading single quote.

Ok... this is good... the file is really there and the machine can
state
it... now,

try this:

1) cd into the profiles directory

cd /home/profiles/

2) don't use the -t switch

cp .icc /the/target/directory/whatever/that/is/

let me know what happens.

It will complain if there is no source file that you want to copy or there is

This was example how names suppose to be.
Instead of "my directory" use my_directory like it is used in:
  Adobe_ICC_Profiles
and
  RGB_Profiles

BTW, in your home directory there is no need to use "my".
It is all yours ;-)

you can use single quotes as well ' '

Known or unknown to KDE or GNOME, doesn't mean anything for copy operation,
even in graphic mode, and nothing at all in the shell (text mode, command
line).

What is important are:
- spaces in the file or directory name will break the name in 2 parts
"my directory" for the shell are 2 files "my" and "directory",
so put that in quotes will keep them as one file name, or using
 my\ directory
will tell shell that space is part of the name.
- slash / that marks directory, and it should not follow normal file
- file names are case sensitive, so Dwain is not the same as dwain, DWAIN,
dWAIN (with Caps Lock active), DwAiN etc.
- any character that doesn't belong like dot mentioned in other post.

If you want to use command line
 cp -t /usr/share/color/icc/Adobe_ICC_Profiles/RGB_Profiles/
/home/my\ directory/file\ directory/file.icc

Note that line is broken in mail message and it should be single line with one
space instead of .
The back slash as mentioned makes shell to accept space as part of the name.

In the KDE you should have:
  Main menu - Applications
System -- File Manager -- File Manager - Super User Mode
give root password
  Find file in /home/my_directory/file_directory/file.icc/
Right click on file.icc to get drop down menu, click Copy.
  Browse to /usr/share/color/icc/Adobe_ICC_Profiles/RGB_Profiles/
Right click on empty space to get drop down menu, click Paste.
  Done.

There are no spaces in the directory names. the .icc file is in the
profiles directory in my home directory. I can navigate to that
directory, but for some reason the file is not found. I see it in
Konqueror. I have a tar file in the downloads directory. When I hover
over it, the file info pops up and says the type of file is a tar file.
So much for the windows thing, but I'm not argueing with you, I'm just
trying to understand this new operating system and I'm bound to ask some
pretty ignorant questions as I make the transition from Windows to
Linux. Please bear with me. The learning curve is very steep and I'm

I just did the ls -al profiles thing and it found two files in the
directory. One of them being the .icc file. Help me understand why
when I try to copy it to the RGB Profiles directory it can't be found?

I have done it both ways you have recommended and it still tells me the
file or directory does not exist. I have written the file name as it
was downloaded in caps where there are caps and I have written it in
lowercase letters and still the message tells me the file does not

When I did it the last way you show I used the quotation marks as you
showed. Still, file does not exist.

Question, if a file type is unknown can it be copied, moved or whatever?

/home/my directory/file directory/file.icc/
   ^^^ ^^^
Are the spaces real? Is that file or directory?

If spaces are not the problem than
 cp --help
tells
Usage: cp [OPTION]... [-T] SOURCE DEST
  or: cp [OPTION]... SOURCE... DIRECTORY
or: cp [OPTION]... -t DIRECTORY SOURCE...
Copy SOURCE to DEST, or multiple SOURCE(s) to DIRECTORY.

So your command tells cp to use:
 /home/my_directory/file_directory/file.icc/
as directory where you should copy:
 /usr/share/color/icc/Adobe_ICC_Profiles/RGB_Profiles/

Simple
 cd /home/my_directory/file_directory/
 cp file.icc /usr/share/color/icc/Adobe_ICC_Profiles/RGB_Profiles/
will do what you want, or if you want your way:

 cp -t /usr/share/color/icc/Adobe_ICC_Profiles/RGB_Profiles/ "/home/my
directory/file directory/file.icc"
should do it.

Remove the slash after file.icc aqnd if the . is part of your cp
command, remove that to. If the source directory have spaces in it, you
need to escape them. In other words;

cp -t /home/my\ directory/file.icc
directory/file.icc /usr/share/color/icc/Adobe_ICC_Profiles/RGB_Profiles/

[opensuse] copy problem

2007-03-31 Thread dwain
I'm trying to copy an .icc profile from my home directory to the Adobe
Icc Profiles/RGB Profiles directory. I su in the console then cp -t
/home/my directory/file directory/file.icc/
/usr/share/color/icc/Adobe_ICC_Profiles/RGB_Profiles/.

The result is that the .icc file does not exist. What am I doing
incorrectly? How do I need to write the command?
