Well, think about it: If you fear that you could annoy the two or three people
that read the bugzilla report by a false report, does it then make sense to
send the same thing to a list with hundreds or thousands of subscribers to
annoy all of them instead?

Actually posting something you think is most likely a bug to a mailing list
first to get "permission" to enter it into bugzilla is almost everytime a
waste of time of hundreds or thousands of people (including yourself's time).

Asking something like this on the list makes only sense if it is something
that cannot be considered right or wrong but is more a matter of taste. In
_that_ case it might make sense to start a public discussion on what other
people would prefer.

And by the way: Most likely nobody would kill you for some false bug reports
--- unless you do all of them on the mailing list. ;-)

-vanilla kernel means a kernel as delivered on kernel.org without any
additional patches from SUSE. You will find it on ftp.opensuse.org (or
mirrors) at /pub/opensuse/repositories/Kernel:/Vanilla/SUSE_Factory/

Hi Greg,

I thought I was using the default (vanilla) kernel. Do you mean the i386
kernel?
So far I have only downloaded the X86_64 A4-A5 delta iso and applied it. I
checked the media as part of the install but have not independently verified
the md5sum of the delta.iso.

Eeek, that's not good at all (and is indicitive of not a USB problem,
but something else.)

Can you try out the -vanilla kernel and let us know if that fixes the
problem or not? If not, we need to know this real soon as 2.6.22 is
about to be released.

[opensuse-factory] Suggestions for "1-CD KDE media"

2007-06-17 Thread Gregg Nicholas

* Please test the new 1 CD GNOME and KDE installation media and tell
us how to improve them. Please keep in mind the space constraints.

Tried the 1-CD KDE media on one laptop so far. I've tried the Installation options from
the menu (Installation, ACPI disabled, local APIC disabled, safe). They all end up at
the same place: "Could not find the openSUSE Installation CD."

Did not have this problem while installing other distros on this laptop,
including Mandriva, Mint, Mepis, and Kanotix.

Compaq Presario 710US

booting from that CD, using network install failed from
http://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/
"Installation system does not match your boot medium." "An error occurred during
the installation."

installing from 1-CD KDE media with "brokenmodules=pata_via" worked - it
decided to use via82cxxx

automatic settings for X failed but was able to fix with "sax2 -r -i -a"

my wifi card not working - "Agere Systems", "Wireless PC Card Model 0110"

From my limited experience, the 1-CD KDE installation could be improved if:

1- a newbie might give up when faced with the installation problem caused by
"pata_via". Can this be improved with better hardware detection or with some
method that detects the failure and automatically tries an alternative?

2- I remember choosing this wifi card because it used to be supported by
Linux. I'll have to dig further into how to get it working. It would seem
that wireless networking still needs some improvement. If it can't
automatically detect and enable all wifi hardware variations, maybe we can help
the newbie with a utility that tries to identify the card and jump to a website
with instructions and downloads to enable that hardware.

3- After installation, I tried to add some of my favorite utilities using
YAST. Software Management didn't find any of them. Maybe the 1-CD media could
automatically add a repository for the Internet installation so that it will be
easier for the newbie to add programs? (If that option was already provided
during the installation, I must've missed it.)

One of the few pleasure left, is avoid AM/FM "Me Too" stations and

Concerning mandated "Royalty rates for webcasters". Please consider
going to " www.savenetradio.org/ " and then take action to help reverse

[opensuse-factory] KIWI looks promising

2007-06-17 Thread Alexey Eremenko

hi all !

I must say that The KIWI system looks promising... I'll have to dig a
bit to find all the rough edges yet... I like the way this concept is
built !

I like that it uses single approach for both PXE boot and LiveDVDs...

I hope to see Yast-KIWI integration in the future, so some other sort
of GUI to control those features.

So this technology is really NEW. nice.

AFAIK it is available from Alpha5, and may be a very solid addition to
openSUSE 10.3. If this will work, it will be one of the biggest
changes from 10.2.

I still haven't tested it, but I hope to do it soon...

But I already have a question: Is SUSE's "KIWI" similar to Fedora's
"Stateless" in concept? Are those projects related ?
