It might be not bad idea, to give beagle only to work in the background, and full, when no other activity is present, like 'away from pc', no mouse movements for 'x' minutes, like screensaver.. But whenever the user moves, it must imediately stop the activities, and go low profile. I find it amazing to see, how fast, and the kind of info it comes with... Not knowing what to do I went to the java site and downloaded the jre-6u3-linux-amd64.rpm but did not install it because the install instructions say it should be installed in /usr/java or /usr/local/java, neither of which I have. [opensuse-factory] Is it possible to completely do without Gnome?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I upgraded all pkgs manualy choosen.. When trying to get rid of gnome, this was impossible... Very anoying, to have to install pkgs and apps to your system, you never use, just to fullfill deps. Is there a way to check which gnome specific pkgs are realy needed to run suse? I am satisfied with KDE and if xfce is dependable on gnome, i will get rid of it also. I want to run a 'gnomeclean' KDE environment. Is this possible? (strange that these have to be mixed to function anyway.) This way i am forced to 'check' gnome also, which i do not want. This list is fine, but perhaps you can call your zypper with english locale before you report problems. Greetings, Stephan This sounds more simple than it is.. (or should i change all to english?) For me it is not a problem, for the packetmanager also not. java-1_5_0-sun-plugin-1.5.0_update13-15.i586[openSUSE-extra-FTP_11.0] offers it, but another version is allready installed. It says that pkgs are missing, ie no-one offers them atm. I can choose not to install the packages, the deps are missing for, or, as zypper tells me: '..will be installed by another programm..' (app low/app high) whatever that means... anyway,i will check the pkgs with yast, to find out what is the matter. libenchant1-1.3.0-12.i586[openSUSE-FACTORY_11.0] is offered, but also another version is installed. My queston: should zypper not uninstall the allready installed (older) version(s) first, and than install the newer version(s), or am i wrong here? Well in gui, when in Software management screen, you can click on the package then select versions tab and choose which version you want to use. With zypper you can do it too - from man page: install (in) [options] --capability capability ... Install or update packages or other resolvables. The resolvables can be selected by their name or by a capability they provide. Capability is: NAME, or NAME[OPEDITION], where OP is , =, =, =, or and EDITION is VERSION[-RELEASE], for example: zyp‐ per=0.8.8-2. The NAME component of a capability is not only a package name but any symbol provided by packages: /bin/vi, libcurl.so.3, perl(Time::ParseDate). Just remember to quote to protect the special characters from the shell, for example: zypper\0.8.10 or 'zypper0.8.10' If EDITION is not specified, the newest available version will be installed. This also means that if the package is already installed and newer versions are available, it will get upgraded to the newest one. This is typically obtuse man-page-speak to this simple user (gives me a headache!) but suggests you can select which version, provided you can unravel this explanation. [opensuse-factory] Not working install-options in right-click service menu konqueror confusing.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Now that the buildservice has got their 1-Click install, things are changed. Earlier i noticed that the service entries in the right-click menu in konqueror,did/do not run the desired option. But they are still there, why is that than? Personaly i find these options very comfortable, if they work. Finding a downloaded rpm with the mouse is easier than in cli (you have to know the exact name) Have found it imediate action can be taken: Right click actions: install with: whatever pkgmngr you want: smart. zypper, Yast2. iac yast does not use the pointed rpm, but goes online to get one that is allready installed, and installs it again. I think this is kind of stupid behaviour. If it looks, it must see that the version it wants to install, allready is installed, and say that. But the most stupid i find that it cannot install the rpm i pointed. Because the konqueror menus are used very frequent, it is obvious that options presented there should work, otherwise they should be removed. These things disturb me quite a while now, because it is realy time robbing to follow these options to get nowhere. Also my patience is tested very seriously that way. What i tell here is objective experience, as a normal user experiences, if he/she wants to something as installing a package to replace one that does not work... It was written an hour ago, before lunch, but it adds more info, so here it is: /home/RPM/ can be added, but it has to contain metadata about packages. The way I use is to run program 'createrepo' in that directory which will create subdirectory 'repodata' and than add /home/RPM/ to package sources. With this procedure YaST etc, will complain that packages are not signed, but you can tell to use them anyway. Second deficiency of this method is that you have to run 'createrepo' on every change otherwise YaST or 'zypper refresh' will not find any changes you made, ie. will not find new packages or complain about missing packages. Aha. I presume the 2th defciency will be corrected? About 'naked' modules in Other menu: all /usr/share/applications/YaST2/*desktop files should probably have OnlyShowIn=KDE;GNOME; like /usr/share/applications/YaST.desktop does. That's because the YaST people decided to use some KDE- and GNOME-only (non-standardised!) extension to the .desktop format to require root permission instead of using xdg-su. Because YaST is useless without root permissions, we decided to show it only in KDE and GNOME. To show? The password requester? The Naked Modules?, or ? Sorry, this is a little cryptic for me atm..
