Re: [OPSAWG] [inventory-yang] poll for network inventory base model

2023-09-14 Thread Olga Havel
Hi,

My preference is to go with Option 3 and create a core inventory model that
could going forward be used for physical, virtual and resource logical
inventory. I know the initial scope is to look at hardware and software
components, but as it is a new effort we could provide the core that could be
extended in the future.

One of the approaches from TMF that we can consider is to use the core
inventory model that can be extended for all resources (TMF639), where resource
inventory is split into physical and logical inventory. This is also aligned
with ITU-T, MEF, ONAP, ...

The new draft should also not replicate the same info that is in other drafts,
like geo-location, L2 and L3 topology properties, proposed extension to IETF
topology for digital map etc.

Some comments about the individual drafts:
[1] draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory-yang-02
The draft uses the TMF MTOSI Physical Inventory Model approach, and focuses on
modelling of physical components of the network element, like rack, chassis,
slot, board and port. The draft is also based on RFC8348 (which defines the
YANG for single device physical inventory model) and plans to look at how to
reuse this single device model at controller API by either reusing definitions
or using schema-mount. I believe these are the correct approaches when the
scope is physical inventory only, but my understanding is that the goal is to
have the model for both physical, virtual and software inventory.

[2] draft-wzwb-opsawg-network-inventory-management-03
The draft is focusing on network inventory, and defines it as a list of
equipment, where equipment can be either physical or virtual. It has other
properties that do not belong to the physical layer, like licenses, location,
has links to asset ids. It has some duplications with IETF topology models for
L2 and L3, geo-location RFC and some properties that may not belong to core
inventory.

Best Regards,
Olga

Hi Working Group,

It's now time to start considering how to move forward with the inventory base
model. We have two different documents that could be used as a starting point
for our work or, in case the working group believes none of them is "good
enough", we can start a brand new ID.
In case the latter option is chosen, Daniele and I will write a -00 version
including just the table of content and what we'd like to be covered in each
section. The document will then be handed over to a pool of authors which will
bring it till the WG adoption.

Hence, we will have a 3 weeks polling starting today. We decided to make it a
bit longer than usual because this time the working group is requested to
review two drafts instead of one.

This mail starts a 3 weeks polling, terminating on September 15th, where we
would like the working group to express your preference among:

  1. Adopt draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory-yang-02 in IVY and evolve it to
become the network inventory base model
  2. Adopt draft-wzwb-opsawg-network-inventory-management-03 in IVY and evolve
it to become the network inventory base model
  3. Start a brand new document from scratch as described above

In the week after the closure of the polling (between September 18 and 25) we
will have an IVY interim meeting to discuss the issues/concerns raised during
the polling ( A separate mail will be sent).

Thank you,

Qiufang and Daniele

Re: [OPSAWG] [inventory-yang] poll for network inventory base model

2023-09-13 Thread Italo Busi
My preference is option 1 to adopt draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory-yang-02
in IVY and evolve it to become the network inventory base model

I understand this draft does not cover all the items in the WG charter but IMHO
there is no need to cover all the IVY WG charter items into a single
draft nor into a single YANG model. Experience usually shows that modular
and incremental (step-by-step) approaches work better with complex scenarios as
those we are trying to address in the IVY WG

In this case, considering only HW and SW inventory requirements, I have noted
that two different set of UCs have been discussed:

  *   UCs  where  only  HW  inventory  is  required;
  * UCs where both HW and SW inventory is required

A modular approach defining a base model that covers the common
requirements (i.e., HW inventory) and one or more augmentation models
that covers optional additional requirements (e.g., SW inventory) would
better address these different set of UCs

Moreover, requirements and solutions for HW inventory are more mature
(based on existing standards, like RFC8348 and TMF, and proven by many years
of real network deployments) than emerging requirements and solutions for
 virtualization, SW and licenses inventory

The proposed model split would allow both HW and SW inventory to progress in
parallel and to reach RFC publication as quickly as possible

IMHO, evolving draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory-yang-02 to become the network
inventory base model would imply also providing the required technical changes
to support other model augmentations that cover additional requirements (e.g.,
SW inventory). The technical details for these changes can be discussed in the
interim WG meeting or even offline before/after the interim meeting

Re: [OPSAWG] [inventory-yang] poll for network inventory base model

2023-09-06 Thread Alexander L Clemm
I think that options 1 and 2 are closer than we think and can be aligned
if we can agree on getting rid of the network-hardware-inventory
container object that is defined in draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory.
This will allow us to move forward quickly with a model for network
hardware inventory, as required by ccamp, while preserving the option
for a model that can be generalized and extended to incorporate other
types of inventory, as desired by ivy.  I'll describe a bit more details
in a separate email in order to not distract from the poll.

I guess this makes me a proponent of option 3, but with the caveat that
this would not need to restart from scratch.  Instead it can be derived
in very straighforward manner from the existing models with these slight
alignments as described.  I am also sure that a lot of the existing text
can be salvaged.

2023-09-05 Thread Wubo (lana)
Hi Qiufang, Daniele, all,

I voted for option 3. As I read the whole draft of option 1, the content is
very hardware-centric. I think the attributes of physical and virtual devices,
or the attributes of software and hardware components, are quite common and can
be shared rather than augmentation.

I believe the inventory base model is a generic model, not limited to hardware
inventory.

+1,
draft-ietf-Ccamp only focuses on hardware inventory while draft-wzwb is more
aligned with IVY charter goal and scope and show its completeness.
Maybe from each of two drafts, we can pick one leading operator and one leading
vendor to work together and document the merged version.
Hope this can be seen another option for the way forward.

Hi Qiufang, Daniele, all,

My preference is to go for option 1, that is start from
draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory-yang-02 and later evolve it to match IVY
requirements. In my view the yang model in that draft has a structure that is a
good starting point for building the base model and already provides ways to
link the inventory with topology modules, which is a big bonus.

I assume that, independent of the chosen option, the document
with the base inventory model will include also the requirements and there will
not be a separated requirements documents. Am I correct?

Re: [OPSAWG] [inventory-yang] poll for network inventory base model

2023-08-28 Thread Diego R. Lopez
Hi,

I was about to send a reply in the same sense as Joe’s. I’d support a solution
based on draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory-yang-02 draft, incorporating some
(many) valid aspects in draft-wzwb-opsawg-network-inventory-management-03.

I guess this could be considered as a (3), with stronger (1) flavor…

Be goode,

For this polling, we’re trying to figure out if there is a consensus to use one

If there is, the chairs’ assumption is to ask the authors to move the work to
IVY, instead of just referencing it progressed in other places. It may still
take some time for the WG (e.g., via design team discussion, interim
meeting(s)) to tailor the work to fully fit the IVY charter, that’s why we say
“evolve it to become the network inventory base model”.

Since you copied opsawg, I’ll make it clear my reply is as a contributor. As I
said at the first IVY meeting, I like the CCAMP work a bit more as a base
inventory draft. It feels more data-centric and less use-case centric if that
makes sense.

That said, it’s adopted work in CCAMP. What would happen to it? Would it move
to IVY? Would IVY work just reference it as it progresses through CCAMP?

While I like option 1, I think perhaps option 3 might be more viable, but using
the model of the CCAMP work where it leverages previous ENTITY-MIB concepts
while staying true to common inventory.

Hi Working Group,

It’s now time to start considering how to move forward with the inventory base
model. We have two different documents that could be used as a starting point
for our work or, in case the working group believes none of them is “good
enough”, we can start a brand new ID.
In case the latter option is chosen, Daniele and I will write a -00 version
including just the table of content and what we’d like to be covered in each

1. Adopt draft-ietf-ccamp-network-inventory-yang-02 in IVY and evolve it
to become the network inventory base model
2. Adopt draft-wzwb-opsawg-network-inventory-management-03 in IVY and
evolve it to become the network inventory base model
3. Start a brand new document from scratch as described above

In the week after the closure of the polling (between September 18 and 25) we
will have an IVY interim meeting to discuss the issues/concerns raised during
the polling ( A separate mail will be sent).

Thank you,

Qiufang and Daniele
